I’m not sure if Casper was like wanting to be cared for just so that he could go out again and die on his shield. That’s just delusional, the heroic dog signalled clearly that he had enough, was severely injured and needed urgent attention. Let’s just celebrate that he did a mightily successful deed that virtually retired him from active service for life and he sensibly called for care and comfort - just as his loving and caring owner said, which was duly delivered.

You should learn that l objected to the silly anthropomorphising comment made for a severely injured animal with hardly any reference made to the welfare of the animal after an epic traumatising ordeal. The OC made a one way comment like only our human needs are important. We all know Casper is a herding sheep dog, that’s besides the point, he’s still a loyal animal that suffered greatly, and that was barely acknowledged by the commenter. So don’t go provoking and looking for malice where there isn’t any, it’s not a good way to get by in life, be careful.
What I didn't see in the chat is that the other dog stayed behind and protected the flock. The crazy thing is that they weren't mindlessly fighting coyotes as part of an instinct. They were protecting. While Daisy stayed behind as a last line of defence, Casper stood his ground like a true Spartan and John Wick'd the life out of those hapless coyotes. I can imagine those coyotes that survived the purge telling this story for generations.

If they are walking through a village wit the sheep they are totally calm and gentle. If they are on the hills with the sheep and you are NOT the shepherd DO NOT go near them. If they are at the owner's house and the owner welcomes you they are welcoming and will protect you. If not they will not let you in. They dont have to be taught this, this is how they behave. Yeah, Great Pyrenees (from real LGD lines -- not the pets with some Gold Retriever mixed in :) are instinctive guardians. They need to be around the livestock from the time they're pups to bond with them, but they don't have to be trained like one would train a GSD for police dog work, or anything like that. In fact, it's a pain in the arse to train those dogs to do anything, because they are super independent-minded. Very smart, but they make their own decisions. Same with the other LGDs, like the Turkish "Anatolians" and the Caucasian Ovcharkas and such.

Or, you know, an owner that gave enough of a shit to help instead of watching helplessly.
For those saying Casper won't be happy indoors because he's a livestock guardian dog: When a livestock guardian dog acquires catastrophic injury or just gets older than dirt, I can tell you from experience they are just as happy to be indoors guarding the home, the humans and the other pets. You're correct that they have thousands of years of genetics telling them what they need to do. My livestock guardian dog was 14 when I brought her in the house. She had severe arthritis and dysplasia. She was quite happy to be indoors because she still had a job to do. She was having trouble getting around outside and her genetics told her to fight anything that came onto the property. She was too old to be fighting, it would have killed her. For the last two and a half years of her life, until she was 16 and 1/2, she was more than happy to be indoors still doing her job. She still likes to go outside and play in the snow, but she was more than thrilled to come in when she was done and lay on her soft cushiony bed. Yes, working dogs need to work, but there are plenty of jobs of working dog will do that don't require them to be in harm's Way anymore once they are injured or elderly. It's more of an adjustment for the humans than it is for the guardian dog

Most of us will never know a true hero, man or animal. Casper is indeed a true hero!
Casper is an exemplary sheepdog, hes the reason why some breeds are referred to as "sheepdogs" and where the "sheepdog mentality" phrase comes from. These breeds with thousands of years of genetics and evolution in protecting the herd are incredibly special dogs. Its deeply ingrained in them, right down to their soul, that their #1 drive and purpose in life is to protect and serve their family. And that "family" absolutely includes all the animals they are there to protect, not just their human family, in their eyes the herd(or any animals they serve to protect) is just as much their family as anyone or anything else. You can teach other breeds to protect livestock and their family, but they will never have the drive and tenacity and intelligence to do it like a sheepdog does, theyre literally born knowing that theyre the tip of the spear for their family and do not hesitate to take appropriate action when the time comes. Definitely not a breed for everyone though, as much as Id love a sheepdog, itd be cruel to own one without having a farm/something to protect as part of their duty to serve and protect.

Similar experience but with an Akita. I had moved out and created a farmstead in Arizona 30 years ago and as part of this life journey did a rescue for an 2 year old Akita who had been abused as a fighting dog. I named her Kuraokami as she was indeed a dragon. I spent 6 months gaining her trust and nursing her back to health. Late one evening as I was cleaning up I heard a tremendous howling and ruckus coming from the back of my property. Kuraokami was not in the area and, if you have every had an Akita, you know they don't bark or make a a lot of noise at all. I grabbed my 30-30 and ran to where the noise was coming from. My heart sank as I knew there was a pack of the coyotes in the area, and their trick to get a quick meal, was to lure dogs out into the scrub brush and take them down by shear numbers. I ran out and came up on Kuraokami in a clearing. She was surrounded by, what was left, of a pack of coyotes. 6 lay dead around her, and another 6 still circled. I raise my 30-30 but watched in amazement as one tried to flank her, and she spun on one back foot, grabbed it by the neck snapped it in one fluid motion and killed it without even losing any flow and faced the pack again.. seeming to grin in pure enjoyment. After the pack saw this latest member of the pack die and then smelled me they high tailed it off into the desert and I never was bother by them again. Kuraokami followed me home and fell asleep at the foot of my bed like nothing happened. The loyalty, power and elegance of this breed of dog is amazing and my love for them has never since faltered. RIP Kuraokami you will always be remembered, loved and dearly missed by your former partner and friend. See you in the stars soon.
