'He's lucky to be alive' | Vets describe care for dog that killed 8 coyotes protecting sheep
Nurses said Casper lost his tail and had significant wounds to on his back and neck, and wasn't even found until two days after the attack by a pack of 11 coyotes.
Despite being only a 20-month-old Great Pyrenees, the livestock herding dog at a home in Decatur displayed his heroic actions by protecting a herd of sheep last month.

A true warrior. Don't force him to be a house dog. Guarding is what he was born to do and wants to do. As I understood the original story, the last dead coyote was found a considerable distance from where this all began. So, he engaged in a running battle with the coyotes away from where they initially tried attacking the sheep. Then he turned up two days later back behind his owners house. This dog goes down in guard dog INFAMY. Salute to Casper !

The owner of this dog has two Great Pyrenees dogs. On the night of the attack, one of the dogs, guarded the sheep, while this dog fought the coyotes all by himself. The owner needs several more dogs to guard his flock. There are way too many coyotes for one dog to have to fight on his own. It’s very sad the brave dog killed eight coyotes. But it was just too much work for one dog.

What a champion! I used to live on a farm where we'd get coyotes, mountain lions, raccoons, hawks etc. Hunting our farm animals, but our cats and dogs would always help chase them off. One of our dogs fought off a mountain lion that was targeting me and my brother when we were little and playing outside. He got clawed up something fierce but didn't back down even when the big cat ran for it. Truly man's best friends
I can see people line up for his puppies, Casper has started a new legendary blood line.

And it’s been going on for about 10,000 years, but it’s never been a good thing for the planet and the biomass of wild flora and fauna that is systematically destroyed by animal agriculture industry operations, and the ensuing deforestation, habitat loss, and species extinction it has caused globally. This is a horrible story, and dogs and people who own dogs and who farm animals are what really need to go. Or at least wake the F up and change your unconscious, selfish ways of life. End all support of the animal agriculture industry worldwide effective immediately, including all animal-based pharmaceuticals, like vaccines! Instead, plant trees, and eat plants. Ya know? Like an actual guardian, gardener, steward, and protector of All Life and of all habitats and all creatures great and small, like human animals are meant to be. Not killers, destroyers, and consumers of All Life and of all habitats and all creatures great and small, like we are and have been for far too long. That’s more like being totally Satanic and worshipping Satan by normalizing violence, and worshipping death by eating it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Gah! So unconscious! So ridiculous! During the incident, Wierwille's five other Great Pyrenees dogs herded the farm's sheep away from the chaos.

Truly a hero! To see this kind of love and loyalty just brings tears to my eyes. Knowing this it so infuriates me to read how so many people abandon their pets and/or treat them so poorly. I think animals have more compassion and empathy than some humans. ❤
I'm so glad I found an update on this awesome dog! If this was my dog, I would pay whatever it cost to save him. What an extraordinary boy he is! He did his job well, and I hope after this he's able to spend the rest of his life relaxing and being loved on by his family. This story was a crazy one, but impressive! I'm so glad he survived!

I wanna hug him so bad! He's the bravest dog ever!!! What a HERO he is! 🫂😭❤️ I hope he fully recovers soon! Oh, I had a beloved dog named Casper too! He was a beagle, and the same colour as the Hero dog too! Sadly, he passed away 2 years ago. He was 20 then. I missed him so much till this day.
Poor little guy. He's fine his job well. He deserves to live inside now, no more work. Lots of love! New digs for outside. This guy earned everything a good can already in only his first few months. I'm in love. What a great guy.

Oddly enough, if you retired this sweet, brave dog to pet status, he'd probably be unhappy. These dogs are the best guard dogs in the world. This boy would probably become depressed and waste away if he couldn't be outside, doing his job. Get him a backup dog or two, and let him return to his rightful place as head of the guardian brigade. It's his calling, and he would be miserable if he couldn't go back to it. I know. I've had 2 GPS. They absolutely live for their jobs.
SO LOYAL, FAITHFUL, & DETERMINED TO PROTECT THE HELPLESS FROM HARM! I bet any puppies he fathers will be just as he is. If I had children I would want one like him guarding them. One poor thing on this report.... there is no contact or link to contribute for Casper!! There should be!

In cases like these people see the story and donations pour in from everywhere and they end up collecting far more than they need meanwhile their are animals locally that need help where all those people live that dont get the help or the care they need because their story wasnt on the news .Every animal certainly doesnt have a story like this but every animal that needs care deserves to have it and there are always animals locally that need donations and care .

My former in-laws had a pair of Pyrenees to protect their property and chickens, and they once played tug of war with a raccoon that got inside the fence and ripped it in half - they're no joke, but they are also amazingly gentle with people, and especially kids.

This creature was the first one on my mind when I got up this morning. And I was in severe back pain. And these vets are heros.
1 vs 11 and still survived😭😭 that’s incredible! Imagine how easier it would’ve been if there were 2 more of the breed protecting the sheep. Would’ve been easier but wow this dog looks pretty good with all things considered. I’ve seen more gruesome looking outcomes in just a 1 vs 1 this dog/breed must be amazing in defending itself and fighting off predators

The Great Pyrenees is a guardian dog not a herding dog. They’re different breeds because they perform different duties and have different responsibilities. This beautiful boy did exactly what his breed was created to do. The urge to protect is instinctive. An incredibly courageous effort and at such a young age. This dog deserves an early retirement ❤❤❤

i have a great pyrenees and he is a guard dog in training. he notices when things are different at home, last night he got into a barking fit cause he noticed a piece of paper was taped to the door. i also have a herding dog (samoyed) who does watch over the goats too but mostly leads them into the barn at night or away from danger and cleans them. she is very protective over the youngest goat and will step in if the older goats are playing too rough with him

Why on earth would 28 people (as of now) give this story a "thumbs down?" Are they disappointed that the dog survived? The only reason I can think of that these are people who just give a thumbs down to anything this channel produces. I know nothing about this channel or its policies; but people need to get beyond their petty hatreds and resentments and join in some common humanity. The dog in this story showed more courage and strength of character than some of the human "naysayers."

Awww! What a faithful warrior 💗 I am confused how EIGHT coyotes stuck around long enough to get killed. I would think the pack would move on when they were being taken down. Great Pyrenees are just the BEST dogs. *edited to add: I saw another poster that said he pursued them into the woods & picked them off while female guard dog stayed with the flock. Then returned to the farmer's chicken area to rest till he was found.
Wishing Casper speedy recovery. He deserves all the love and happiness from here on.
