Springboks finally beat Ireland after drama in Pretoria | The Left Wing

Ruaidhri O'Connor and Cian Tracey joined Will Slattery on The Left Wing podcast to discuss Ireland's narrow defeat to South Africa in the first Test in Pretoria.
Two costly errors from James Lowe in the second half saw the Springboks score a brace of vital tries and the lads are on hand to pick through all the talking points from a dramatic encounter.
There were contentious TMO calls, some strong Irish play and some areas of concern as thoughts now turn towards the second Test next weekend.

I often wonder if the northern hemisphere realises that when we come there in November it's the end of the season for us. I don't hear anyone say the Boks might be fatigued after a long season. Also this guy saying that some of the decisions were because the Boks were at home, do you guys remember when the referee told John Smit to talk to his players and then allowed Ireland to take a quick tap and score? That was worse than any decision seen on Saturday.

Bok fan perspective: I thought we played a mediocre game. Our kicking was atrocious, which meant that we gave away a lot of territory. Our kick-chase is one of our strong points and we hardly ever saw any of that. Almost no mauls from lineouts, but that could've been because they respected the Irish maul defence. We also wasted about 80% of our opportunities in the Irish half. We looked very rusty.

AB's supporter here. Why is it, when Ireland loses, it always comes down to (well, the ultimate excuse) that they weren't at their best. They used the same excuse in their WC quarter final exit. It makes them sound like sore losers and whinging little tossers. And its an insult to the opposition and not a good look for them and the game. Sure, there were calls in yesterday test that were bad on both sides, but ultimately for me, SA were a little bit better and deserve the W. Both sides weren't accurate, but they both had equal chance to win the game. The officials had some shocking calls and need a thorough review. The AB/England was similar. Have to hand it to England, they were good and one could say unlucky, but I thought a one point win to the AB's was fair. England were gracious in defeat as well and positive for next week. Will be interesting to see how the northern hemisphere teams respond next week.

When it was a boks scrum, they dominated. When it was an Irish scrum, Ireland did not take the hit, winning free kicks. Refs need to sort that out. The reason why they went back to ruck to call off the Irish try, is because you can’t go off your feet on the opposition side of the ruck and kick the ball back. Even just lying there prevents a clean out for SA. Aki wasn’t holding his weight over the ball, resting on his arms, that’s a penalty to the boks anyway. Really simple. Ireland in Ireland when they beat SA by 3 points a couple years back, kicked a ball forward through the ruck, which you can’t do, and went on to score a try from it. which should not have stood. The rub of the green went Irelands way that day? SA got the call their way this time. Best team won if you look at the entire game. The usual Ireland attack was totally missing today.

Rassie's player managment in a game is based around energy levels. 2019/2023 boks had a very high energy demand in defensive plays in an aggressive rush defense and emphasis on dominant hits, opting for more energy conservative attacking structure with lots of territory based play. The 2024 boks are opting for both a high energy attacking strategy and defensive one. This requires serious levels of fitness. Adding to this the altitude. It will be interesting to see how this bok team operates at the end of the rugby championship!

It's about the essence of speech and the freedom to use it (without abuse) that people use through custom and practise and is a basic human right. No democratic, sentient, ethical society can police speech, dictating how it's citizens and Jounalists use language. Enoch was illegally sacked and imprisoned by his employers because he declined to speak in class using his employers mandatory changes to the english language and thereby his written speech. This is unlawful. The Irish taxpayers will pay back the huge financial settlements that the Justice, and Education deparments will spend compensating his unlawful sacking and imprisonment. Our government is happy to hope this will blow over and if not, happy to let the Irish public taxes pay huge sums to Enoch, instead of more hospital doctors and beds for the silly Irish taxpayers who also fund the beautiful racehorses winning millions for their owners then sent to torture deaths on shannonside, also the vast tax sums hand-outs to the men who breed doggies in their millions for racing drugging, sickness and more horror deaths down some boreen or shipped to countries you or I would be scared to visit.

Shocking takes there lads. How can Irish media say their players are tired from a long season, they literally play in the same domestic league as the Bok players. I think it shows that the Irish are relieved it was not a big pumping and just 7 points. But we cannot deny that Ireland showed resilience 2nd half but they couldn’t attack and play the way we have seen in the past because of the Bok pressure. Matter of fact Boks seem to be the only team that consistently pressures Ireland to a point where they do not flow in their attack and sort of have to hang on. I think James Lowe was your best player despite that mistake at the restart. But again I think Ireland was hanging on there 3 or 4 instances where the Boks were in your 22 with phases but then Boks would make a silly mistake and the difference would be that the mistake would not be because of Ireland defence but just silly mistakes. On the other hand when Ireland had possession in the bok 22, their mistakes were caused by that bok pressure defence and being dominated physically. Ireland are starting to look like pre-Farrel Ireland again lol

Thank you for you post. As a Bok supporter it’s always good to get a balanced view. While both teams will acknowledge their mistakes, I do think numbers 1 & 2 put on a good show. To be honest, the margin flatters the Boks a little, the game was a lot closer. Had one or two calls gone the other way, we could be looking at a different outcome. The Irish pack demonstrated that they can mix it up with the best, at times I recognized moments of dominance. I’m sure the Boks will focus on the scrums over the coming week. Another area of focus will be to reduce turnovers, Josh had a great game. Having followed Pollard from school level he was slightly off, I think Tony Browns influence is great - it’ll take Pollard a while to make this style of play second nature. He’s a quality player, I believe Tony Brown can take him to a new level. Last comment from me is to acknowledge your 9/10 combination, I believe it has huge potential. Looking forward to a brilliant game in Durban 👏👏👏

Over 100,000 Boer civilians, mostly women and children, were forcibly relocated into concentration camps, where 26,000 died, mostly by starvation and disease.
