Spring has arrived! New Painting Tools & Fresh Creative Energy!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's our first spring in the new studio! The season has brought a flurry of activity both inside and outside. There are gardens to tend, art to hang, and new painting tools to get excited about!
Come join me as I chat about my approach to abstract painting, demonstrate how I am using a needle-tip applicator and brayer to make interesting marks, and watch me work on a bunch of different mixed media pieces.
I hope the spring enthusiasm is contagious!

Richie is absolutely spot on! Create for YOU 1st! I am adoring all you do! I have been in a stuck mode here in our winter weather but you have given me inspiration to grab the cold and apply it to my art which will be beneficial to my early spring exhibits. Saying goodbye to winter in a series… wonderful! Happy New Year!

I agree with Richie. Do what you want and brings you joy. Speaking of joy, that garden is incredible! So much beauty and inspiration - I don't know that I would want to leave. I love the idea of chickens but the reality may not work. My brother and SIL have chickens but they do require daily work and interaction. Plus, don't you guys have lots of icky spiders and snakes down under? Thanks for this video reminding me to include variety - definitely what I needed for some current works.

Hi Laura, your videos are so enjoyable to watch. It is really fun to see your new studio space evolve as you settle in and it's so generous of you to share what you're learning as you go. It's also great fun to see your garden evolve with the seasons! All the Spring growth looks delightful! Your art is really, really beautiful. What you have learned lately about the fine liners and use of a brayer is really cool and such an interesting layer to your mixed media botanical/abstract pieces. Thank you for making and sharing this content!!

Oh my, your studio garden is just lovely! I think you would love having the companty of "studio chickens" - and I wouldn't weed that area. It won't take them any time at all to scratch up all those weeds and get rid of them for you! Your studio is so lovely, too. What a beautiful place to work. And even the indoor plants look like they are thriving! Looks like you got the a/c unit in just in time. I, too, recently bought some of those tiny bottles with needle tops, and now that I've seen you using them I am excited to get going with them. Using the brayer to add to the variety of marks you can make with them is a great idea! I do think Richie is right - do what brings you joy! Whatever art you are doing here on KZread, I'm sure we'll love it!

As for the incomplete larger work…great colours and interesting marks. It’s quite busy so recommend you keep layering and consider where you want the focal point to be.

I'm going to pop in and say that I add water to a deep dish eg a plastic one I've kept from the grocery store that had chicken fillets in it, and put the brayers I use in there, leave them to soak a few hours and using your fingers the acrylic comes off / peels off. Hope this helps :) (A tip I learnt for storing a brayer is store it upside down so you don't get marks on the rubber part. This is a good tip for soaking as well.)

Chickens are pretty low maintenance. I love having them. And the eggs....can’t compare to factory/store bought. I say do it! 😬 And no need to weed that area. That’s what chickens live to do. You probably couldn’t keep a weed alive in there if you tried. 😂 It’s good you’re giving chicken ownership a serious think tho. It’s not for everyone I know. But I’m selfishly hoping to see some happy chickens 🐓 on your channel one day. 😉 Gardens, chickens, and art make for a fab channel. 💚🐓🌿🌸

The problem is, chickens scratch so they can completely wreck a yard, as we found out with our neighbours having chickens. In drought, especially like I'm experiencing in my spot in Australia at the moment, that's not something you want.
