Absolutely important for beginners. It’s too overwhelming.
One of my cats loves watching your videos and tutorials with me, I think the hand and brush movement appeals to him. Imagine his excited little face when Spencer popped up on your table! 🐈 💜 🎨 🖍️🧡🖌️

Oh my goodness, how cute!!
I love the cat cameos! A really helpful video, thank you. I did ‘art’ at school and I never learned about what brushes to use or if there were different kinds of paper, so I wondered why the stuff I did looked so bad, I assumed it was because I was really useless. Now that I’m watching artists on KZread I’m learning so much and also getting really useful tips on what paper to use as a beginner, to DO the mixing to get to know my warm or cool primary colours, to try mixed media. So useful, I’m very grateful for talented artists like yourself to take the time to put videos like this together!

Thank you! Happy to hear that the video was helpful and that that you enjoyed the cat visitor!! He certainly loves an art supply haul :)
Wonderful video and I too really loved seeing your helpful kitty!! ❤. Purring can never be too loud.
Cats like art supplies too. 😺
My cat is also fascinated by any art project and loves rolling around on my sketchbook and then pushing all my materials off the desk :-0. Cat aside, great video. So nice to be reminded that one doesn't need *all the materials* to be having fun.
I don’t have any formal art education; BUT, after mulling my first paint and playing with paints, trying different binders and mediums (to adapt them to use on xuan paper); my best friend bought me a lab coat that says “Mad Scientist”-and she put a small painting on it (with inktense) -an artist palette, next to test tubes with flowers in them.🥰. I worked in a medical research lab for a number of years, and as I deal with some major health issues of my own, my girls and friend are doing everything they can to keep me busy. What i wanted to say though-when my brilliant late son got me back into creating over 12yrs ago; he had introduced me to a Chinese great-grandmother. The first year+, i wasn’t allowed to use paint. You focus on calligraphy and the strokes you make with your ink. Unbeknownst to me at the time, she was also teaching me value studies. NOW, 10+yrs later and still a baby in Western painting; my dear friend (retired art professor herself), has asked me to dedicate this next week to making value studies and monochromatic paintings. As much as I love my high quality Chinese ink and ink sticks…I think I’d like to try some of this liquid watercolor!
Your videos are not only so inspiring and professional but, really make art accessible. This video is brilliantly thought out and provides expert guidance not only to someone new to art but those continuing development. Thank you

I feel motivated to get into Art again because of you, thanks :-)
I love that you continued with the kitty in the video!!
An excellent beginner's primer! Such a well thought out & practical approach. The cat appearance was bonus!
I realised recently that you parchment paper (or whatever they are called… baking paper?) can be used as a palette. As long as they are waterproof. Tear off a piece and place on a large flat tray. I bought a cheap generic roll without the box and it was only AUD2. I made collage paper with it by painting acrylic paints on and it went well.

Brilliant tip, thank you! I always get confused by the names of the different papers in various countries. One day I will get that clear in my head!
Hi Laura, I’ve just recently ‘discovered’ you & have enjoyed binge-watching a lot of your videos as I’m quite fascinated to try out your loose mixed media style of art!! Looks like it would be a lot of fun to artistically create in this way, especially if there is not a lot of great drawing skills needed! Thank you so much for sharing your recommended supplies for us beginners, I’m now quite excited to go shopping… also loved how you gave us an idea of real life price comparisons & reasons why & where you’d spend more or save in other areas! On a different note we must be neighbours of sorts, as I too live in Adelaide - north eastern suburbs, so seeing you pop into the Art to Art store on Glen Osmond Rd was very familiar to me, lol… 😃🎨🖌️😻💚
Am always inspired by your videos, no matter what the subject. Thank you for sharing some of your favorite art tools. I also want to say how very sorry I am for your recent loss of Cooper. I've been through losing a pet several times and it's truly heartbreaking. I believe Cooper is watching over you every moment with great love. ♥
Thank you for sharing this. I love your kitty. Give him a scratch for me! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Happy you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for tuning in 😊
I got into art journaling with Dina Wakley and her heavy body acrylics. I would like to transition to some other brands, types, etc. You recommended some basic watercolor sets, and I would appreciate some ideas on basic acrylic sets, as well as different viscosity, like soft body, high flow, etc. I’m planning to take the upcoming mixed media class, so I was hoping to get some acrylics in time for that class.
Can't wait for this class to begin!!!
Thank you! Very informative as well! I am like a bull in a china shop in the art supply stores!😂 I love your videos and your kitty and I know you miss your doggy. My kitty had cancer and we had to put him down 1 year ago. Broke my heart so I know how you feel. Have a great day, Laura!😊
Great video, Laura!

Love this so much! Thank you, Laura! So informative!
Hi Laura, thanks for another great video. I agree on your idea of less being more. Especially when travelling I try to take a minimum of supplies. However I would always take a couple of neutrals like buff white, raw umber and paynes grey. And recently learned about the joys of painting with a dagger brush, a really versatile beast 😊. Thanks again for sharing and best regards. 🫶🏻

Thank you, and great suggestions, I love a few neutrals in my palette and I also recently fell in love with a dagger brush. They make the most beautiful lines and leaf shapes.
Awesome video!!! Thank you for sharing! Can you make something using only this kit please?
Great video. People watching may think but some of those products are so expensive. Personally it's well worth starting off with the best rather than, say, student grade paints. It makes such a difference having good tools rather than scratchy paints and brushes. I came back to painting with cheap stuff I'd had for years, and bought (and was given) better stuff later on - which made me much more satisfied with my art.

I agree, I’d rather have less paints and a higher quality. Paper can also make such a big difference. My story is similar to yours, my art took off when I discovered Daniel Smith watercolours 🎨

@@LauraHornArt I bought them end of last year after seeing them in one of your videos, the cool & warm ones in the one packet. They're beautiful 😊 I agree with you about paper 👍
With watercolour, it really is better to splash out and get good paper. Arches, Fabriano Artistico, Legion, there are so many. Make sure they are 100% cotton paper. The Van Gogh set is a wonderful starter set. A lot of Van Gogh are single pigment colours so when you mix you won’t muddy your painting. Also, they are dirt cheap. You don’t need to mix anywhere near as much as with the Daniel Smith.

What amazing art shops wish we had one by me in Dorset england not sure if there any art shops like that in england at all
Thank you so much for this video. I really found it informative. I do have an assortment of water colors but am looking forward to limiting myself to the Daniel Smith Essential set (which I just purchased :-) to really get into color mixing. Just an aside....I am in Oregon, USA and we are so looking forward to spring/summer as it has been a very cold and wet winter. Sunny today!! Really enjoy the purring cat and the birds.
Really enjoyed this video. I love Daniel Smith watercolors and have the one of the larger (24) nature I believe. Happily I have a number of products you suggested so I am ready to get started with some of your videos.
Thanks!

It's definitely felt cooler the last couple of nights in Brisbane, but this evening doesn't feel as cool as it was this morning. I've at least gotten some crafting done this afternoon, without having to have the fan on.

@@LauraHornArt Whereas we can't build proper fireplaces in QLD at all. Only fake ones. Most of the time it's too hot for heaters, anyway. Last year was the first time in a few years that it actually got cool enough to be considered cold. I think it'd be quite fun to have a crackling fireplace nearby while crafting. It does sound cosy!
Very helpful. For me, I found Mod Podge always ends up tacky. I buy larger jars of matte medium, Golden brand. The gloss also tends to be tacky
I love everything about this video you create!! What a beautiful house location!!! I want to live there, it feels really cozy, it feels like home for me, where do you live?? I live in holland, maybe one day we can meet each other or share artist houses 😍😍😍💕💕

I love your work and enjoy watching your videos, so apologies in advance if I come across a little brash. It's great for you to take the time to help beginners choose the best supplies. However, since we all found out about Daniel Smith's attitude towards customers (namely their lie about the very expensive Primatek Colors and non-handling of the questions raised) I am wondering why you keep pushing DS paints. The comparison of the two watercolour-sets makes sense at first glance but if you think that a 5 ml tube fills a half-pan 2.5 times and you get exactly 2.5 times the amount of paint/colours in the Royal Talens' "Van Gogh"-set the conclusion is not quite fair. Plus you get the box which is - in my opinion - essential for a beginner. Diving deeper, the Royal Talens' "Van Gogh"-set is the student-grade paint. Their professional artist-grade line Royal Talens' "Rembrandt" is still less than half the price of the DS paints here in Europe, especially when you compare tubes. The DS-sets, I find, are particularly pricey. That may be different in Australia. Overall, I think the best recommendation for a beginner watercolourist is to get a set of professional primaries (as you explained: cool an warm yellows, red and blues) in the brand that is most accessible and best price locally completed with an empty box of half or full pans or a pocelain palette - depending on the size of paper/brush they will use and where they wish to paint as well as the planned location (indoors, possibly with a dedicated space or plein air). Of course, the student-grade set is absolutely fine for sketchbook work but the effects you are describing are definitely more pronounced in any artist-grade paint - especially granulation. And they are what we love as watercolour-enthusiasts! 🥰😘 As far as the acrylic pens are concerned, you are absolutely right in your remarks about the surface but if they are clogged, they are washable (with water), some are reversible and most if not all are replaceable. Love the last tip about gold 😍 fluid acrylic and the tray set-up for a beginner! 😍 Wishing you much success for your upcoming course and hope that the wonderful memories of your companion will soon outweigh the sadness over his loss. 🤗😘

Hi Chrissie, I feel like I must be living under a rock as I have not heard anything about the Daniel Smith issues you mentioned. I will look it it. Thanks also for your suggestions, always good to hear a different perspective as there really isn't one right answer and this is all wonderful information for beginner artists to consider! Thanks again x

I like that you offer affordable beginner tips but keep the quality so people can experience success. I wish this video had been available when I started my own journey. I really started from scratch, knowing nothing. I know people struggle with DS n some kind of philosophical level, but I really like their paints and find them affordable (some companies overcharge for their paints because of their brand name, perhaps that’s questionably ethical too….). Great suggestions to get someone started and have fun!
