When I started learning, I used a power jerk. It seemed simpler, and I was learning at home, where space was limited. Once I worked out a place I could split jerk at home, it took my a very long time to learn. I definitely agree it would have been better to learn to split jerk first. It has taken a lot of practice, but now I find it much easier to split jerk. I find myself doing it almost automatically after the dip and drive. I really need to focus if I’m doing power jerk variations!

The split jerk takes many years to perfect. Beginners think they should power jerk becuase their technique is still shit after 3 months.

I am a beginner weightlifter. For some reason for me it was very natural to do split jerk right from the get go. On power, the motion is too similar to push press, but the position isn't. So when I tried it first on the warmup for my normal split clean and jerk I smacked myself with 60kg right on the chin. The ring in the ears was legendary. Needless to say I was afraid of push presses subconsciously for about a month after that (the bar was just flying forward and there was nothing I could do about it). I never tried it again, if I ever want to try it, I will most certainly not do it on a whim ever again.

So how would you fix a pelvic tilt if you notice it in the split jerk? Also a left or right shift in the front squat.
@Ponyslice2 жыл бұрын
I do a combination between the two, because I'm stronger in the jerking part than the cleaning part. I feel like split jerk is putting more strain on my upper body, if I do it too much it's resulting in uneven pains in the upper body. Therefore on lighter days I prefer power and for the heavy werk split jerk.

Does limited ankle mobility play a part? I have skeletally limited mobility in my left ankle (back leg in the split jerk). I've been weightlifting for two years (sn 110 c&j 130) and my jerk is definately holding me back. I get the weight overhead, but can't keep the position stable. How should I go about switching the technique? A couple of mesocycles only doing powers?

Hello Gabriel, great videos. 2 questions: 1. If power jerk is putting more pressure on low back, is that a reason to avoid it in your opinion or is it more of to keep in mind and strengthen/stretch those areas if PJ is your forte? 2. Like you did with snatch types, are there different types of jerks? Not talking about foot work as that is obvious, more like how in euro style you mentioned shoulders down in catch and shoulders behind in 2nd pull vs bull style of shoulders up and forward in catch and over bar in 2nd pull Have a great day

It's more comfortable to do a power jerk. With split jerk I've always had the issue of getting my hips in the right position. To get my hips stacked my rear leg femur needs to almost be perpendicular to the ground causing a lot of instability, I can't throw the rear leg out and get a solid base.

First! Edit: Definitely prefer the split-jerk BUT it took me a long time to get the hip neutral and to step out wth the front foot far enough.

is it true that the ideal foot technique is that you slide with your back leg and hard hit the floor with your front leg in the split jerk??

I have been training weightlifting for a few months and I'm having difficulties to learn split jerk (in the last weeks it looks better because now I do as you said with keeping the pelvis neutral and upper body vertical). I haven't tried power jerk more than 3 times warming up, if split jerk is not going good (max clean 100kg and max jerk 85kg) how much time should I train to look into power jerk more seirously? A year? 2 years? Great video by the way, first time hearing this line of thought, very good content.
