I’ve had target panic shooting a compound with a release, it finally cost me an 8 point buck at a ridiculously close range, if anyone’s bow hunted for very long, they’ve dealt with target panic.

Good video Robert. I've been around the world with my shooting for over 10 years. Actually quit traditional bak then. I had relied upon instinctive snap shooting successfully for years! But then my eyes changed, glasses, accuracy, my entire shot sequence and I got target panic o bad I could not change! But then two years ago I determined to beat it. Changed everything about my style, and switching to 3 under and my anchor slightly, allowed me to do it. Your videos have helped me a lot to hang in there except my yardage limitations, and leave the compound at home. Praise the Lord, and sure hope to see some bowhunting spring turkeys!

Went to 3 under 25 years ago. Fletch my feathers set back closer to nock. A good solid anchor and feather touching nose like a kisser button. Deadly accurate just shoot close. Prayers sent Mr. Robert.

Hey Robert I agree 100%. I also believe knowing how to shoot both ways makes you a better archer. Anybody will say switching feels strange at first, but they should really stick with it a week or two until their brain makes the adjustment.

I shot a compound bow with 3 fingers under, nocking point 5/16' above level. I also use a nock under the nock. When I install the under nock I just barely tighten it tight against the nock, draw the bow, and wherever the nock moved under the nock I tighten so it would not move so there is a gap from the bottom of the nock to the bottom nocking point. I slide my tab to the bottom nock not touching the actual nock. My broadhead flight was the same as field tips. Killed many deer with a compound using one sight pin set at 25 yards.

6 of one, half dozen of the other. Neither is better, one is better than the other. and so on and so on. I learned 3 under and for no good reason started shooting split in 2022. Actually there is a good reason. I like to be able to learn and do every way on a subject. I am left handed and bowl a 190 average, but I always force myself to play a few games right-handed. Same with writing, playing pool etc etc.

I changed simply to see if it was better. Worked out for me. I have seen some new guys try to learn archery from the start and they struggled shooting split. Tried 3 under and cut the learning curve down.

@@graphguy I write and use a fork with my left hand. But I shoot and do almost everything right handed. I’m also ambidextrous with a lot of things. Swing a hammer either hand, bat with both. And I like to shoot left handed rifles and shotguns for something different. It’s fun Shooting trap and skeet left handed a few rounds. I always give 3 under a try pretty much every time I shoot my long bow. Hopefully if I keep at it, it’ll start feeling more natural.

Funny that this video came out just now, because just yesterday while I was shooting I found myself trying to decide whether or not to practice with 3 under. I've been shooting for a few years now only using split, but I've noticed that I can place my shots slightly closer to center using 3 under. My bow is louder too when I use 3 under. I haven't wanted to switch because I've always practiced with split finger, but I'll give 3 under a shot tomorrow and see how it goes. Worst case I'll just go back to split. Also, thank you for the videos. I've learned a lot in the past two months of watching your content. I admire that you're so outspoken about Jesus. Our country ( and the world ) needs Him now more than ever. I'll be praying for your healing.

Three under is only louder because the bow isnt tillered to 3u. The string hits the limbs two times which makes more noise. If you wanna reduce that just order a custom tillered bow (0 tiller or negative tiller for 3u; positive tiller for split finger)

  • @jeffallen6754

For me three under gives great accuracy with the arrow so close to the eye. But three under is just louder.

Great video! I can relate to and agree with everything you pointed out. I shot split for over 25 yrs. I one day decided to go 3 under and made myself stick with it. For a long time everything went low. I adjusted and started to use a split-vision method. My concistency greatly improved. It gets the arrow closer to your eye which I believe helps with left to right shooting error. Sometimes we may have to set our nocking point higher usually (5/8 to 3/4) to keep the bow "in tiller" unless the bowyer has specifically tillered for 3 under.

I shoot middle and ring finger under and point my index finger anchoring in the corner of my mouth with my middle finger. It’s what I have adapted to for the smoothest release and quietest shot. I think I would shoot low if I shot three under but the accuracy you mention does interest me. I’ll have to try it. I really enjoy your videos and thanks for doing this stuff!

Thank you for making this video. It's funny, I shoot better with a tab whether it's three under or split finger but I want to use a glove because it looks cool. I shoot better three under but I still want to split finger because that's how I was shown and that's how I always have done it. I find what I'm not paying attention my fingers go to split finger. Those two things make no small difference in my accuracy but I still want to do it the other way. LOL

Fighting target panic can be one of the most difficult and frustrating things an archer can do. You need to calm the storm. I like to pretend someone is telling me when to shoot and my job is to stay on target until the command is given. Another idea is to aim at the top of the target then the bottom then the bullseye and release.

I find split finger works for me, I would have to redo the nocks for 3 under however I have found using a higher anchor point then in the past with top finger on the ear cartilage just before the ear canal/ear hole as I was using Jaw hinge for the anchor point going all the way beck there but the bow I had was a 29--30 inch draw where the actual stacking happens that I was over bowed on had a 50--55 pound draw at 29--30 inches. The bows I have now can with only one bow get to my jaw hing with the 36 pound duel sided 60 inch bow where there I am drawing 36--37 pounds unlike the current spot I am 34--35 pounds. I am not having the fletching too high might be a little high but not too high. I do the Aim style with a bow using a the split vision/instinctive gap, both are really similar but I have to let the further item go a bit blurry over the arrow as it hurts to have the closer item out of focus, I can still aim on the further object just the same as before. I did not know I naturally used split vision but then saw the video that Jerry Lee did that is on KZread the full one take version as the 2 part had the intro music still going in the whole thing and got the book by the nephew Jerry Hill after the Video writing in the back the tips and hints and on the blank page in the front wrote a few important pages/chapters on things I want to reference again. I use with the two longbows the Notch grip, the Hunting bow that is 45 pounds at my 24 inch draw is from GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY a notched grip with flat back being the Youth Longbow model and the bow to get back into archery not having done it since 2009 the all fiberglass bow that is 34--35 pounds at my draw is a notched grip with more flat back but the top arrow shelf rest is curved at the very top so I have to fit the fingers and hand lower. I love the notched grip best with longbows and some designs of recurves so I can do a true full grip.

Robert praying you get better soon. I shoot split finger and I’m also a gaper. I guess that makes me an odd duck. I have played with 3 under off an on. 3 under will reduce my gaps by about 9 inches. Not that big a deal. In my opinion 3 under is so popular not necessarily because it’s better. Obviously it’s not. Otherwise Olympic archers would be shooting 3 under. It’s human nature. If someone is winning we want to do what they do to be a winner. Split finger can be accurate. People like Howard Hill, Bryan Ferguson and man more were very accurate. I can’t think of one 3 under shooter that I’ve seen shoot an aspirin out of the air. I have a conversation with my brother all the time. He wants to know why I shoot that long bow when I could shoot quarter size groups with a compound. I tell him I don’t need quarter size groups. All I need is one arrow in the center of the vitals that are the size of a basketball. I think the really great archers could shoot either style, split, three under or thumb and still be great. The rest of us would try to follow. It’s just human nature.

Prayers for you Robert! Be well soon. Do you have to adjust your nocking point for 3 under at all? I understand the second nock and that could be the reason I have had bad arrow flight trying 3 under. Also, have you ever drawn on an animal (3 under) and had the arrow fall off? I usually tune my nocks, when shooting “split” to fall off off my string, when held horizontally, with a tap of the string. Do you make your nocks a little tighter? I appreciate you and your help..thx! God bless.
