I sometimes wonder what draws me back to people, over and over again. Most every time, its consistency in PHILOSOPHICAL habits, viewpoints, and, practices that lead to success in life. Thanks for drawing me back, time and time again.

very good advice, i pick my bow up every day that I am home and do the 'close my eyes drill" come to full draw and a solid anchor 1 time every day to keep my old brain trained to the mechanics and the feel of a solid anchor , thanks for the tips

Glad I found this. I pick a spot drawbridge anchor close my eyes for 3 seconds then open and when my mind gets a solution the arrow is off and hits! Still instinctive but need the time for my brain to process and reach a shooting solution. God Bless!

It’s the same with shooting a slingshot. You can aim by using something on the frame, like the corner, or center of the rubber band.

I really needed to see this. Im 36 now and deal with target panic but for the last 10 years before now i was a deadly killing machine with a recurve. I shoot 55 and 60 pound bows mainly so killing deer at 35 and 40 yards was no big deal. This year i have missed two big bucks at 12 and 15 yards allready. Ill try the 3 second drill starting tomorrow for sure. I appreciate all that you do brother, your videos and hard work really do make a huge difference. The hunting wisdom is great but the life lessons that i have gathered from your content are far more important. Jake Rogers

Just came in from my stand.. Going to shoot a few here in camp. Didn't see anything but Squirrels today, trying different woods this evening. Totally makes good sense Robert. I, too, used to be a better shot until I started experimental techniques from others. Took a few years to forget all the bad habits I had learned. I'm back to my old self by drawing, aiming and releasing just that quick. The more thought I'd put into a shot, the bigger my groups. So I actually have to concentrate on not concentrating. Lol I know sounds crazy but that's how I have to do it. I believe this exercise you have mentioned is about the same? Maybe that three seconds with your eyes closed keeps you/me from over thinking what used to come naturally? Anyways, I like to watch Jeff Phillips also. He's got a way with bows, arrows, tip weights, and spines for different setups. Heck I actually thought of you today while in the woods..seems to me you're a pretty likeable guy like Jeff, and hopefully, I'm that guy others see me as also. My grandson got his first bow kill last weekend! Spotted buck bedded late afternoon and waited him out until he got up and walked by him at that magic 12 yards! From the ground...12point buck, not giant, just nice, 141lb. Proud of him..just turned 16. Now I have some catching up to do with him. Thanks for the tip and for being yourself.

We all deal with target panic and as you say we cant shoot our selves out of it, without making some desisions with in the shot. Flinging arrows without a thought are the road to despare. Good video my man🏹

Another good drill to try is to draw your bow, hit anchor and hold for a few seconds while your staring at your target then just let up and don’t shoot. I shoot instinctive and this has helped me a lot. Really enjoying your video’s.

3 second drill and touch the feather to nose here also..Jason did a video on cold shot. Helped me a lot. I work midnight and as soon as I get home, one shot, and live with it. Then evening I work on 3 second drill. Great information here my Friend.

The key for me is when I separated my aiming from my release. Now I can come to full draw, get my aim right and THEN execute my shot. It made a world of difference and now I don't hold above or below the target anymore. I get my point right where it needs to be from the beginning. It looks like you're on the right track!

After watching the video where you talked about that book, The Long Fix, I bought it and read it. Great book, the exercise you are talking about definitely helps. It has improved my shooting and ability to more consistently hit anchor before releasing. Thanks for sharing and keep the info coming brother.

The Book Sounds like Howard Hills Method to shooting the bow and arrow, by Jerry Hill who was taught all the secrets of Howard Hill even a few that Howard Hill never taught like his anchor spot or a few others due to how most people have own preference of anchor and then a few small issues. Jerry's Book seemed to have this tip for getting anchor that was unique to Jerry Hill when he got off anchor needing to practice, Howard did a different style of hitting anchor that was more thinking routine in mind every time, the way the main chapter from Hunting the Hard way By Howard Hill he described his anchor/shot process like a routine.

I hit anchor too long where I will not release so I have to do a 3--5 second count at times to release the arrow. I also changed the anchor spot from jaw hinge going all the way back to that spot, to now the front of ear hole where most people have that cartilage using that with top finger in a split finger grip to the arrow using type of Split vision/Instinctive Gap shot to get 24.5--25 inch draw sometimes 25.5 inch if using a target style bow with straight arm not a light bend to help with shock. Now as with the standard anchor spots like corner of mouth, I get 21.5--22 inch sometimes 22.5 inch due to size of archer/my arms being small. The traditional anchor spot is a no go as even Kids bows brands can make in hunting weights are often 26--24 inch draw so I did find a brand GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY that was willing to make their Youth Longbow, not up on site for almost 1/2 a year but have to ask for same for the Youth Bow, a recurve. I got the 52 inch Youth Longbow in Hickory at 45 pounds and asked about the Recurve later saying they made the design for youth up to age 9--12 mainly and to fit my hands that are in gloves a Youth XL, Women's Small, the Men's/Unisex extra small so my hands were borderline for fitting the recurve, it is easier to fit a medium notch/deep locator grip that this youth longbow has for adult hands up to a true Medium.

I'm going to get hate on this... Let me confirm first though.. ALL elements of the shot cycle and setup are important. It is not the anchor, it is the bow hand. No matter where and how you anchor (and again they are important), it is where your arrow is pointing at and that comes from the bow hand. Second thing is "miss way off" how is that defined? If we are talking about hunting it should solely be, "did I kill the prey". If so, we are spot on. Target shooting, whether 3D or paper is a different subject. Third thing... how many deer has anyone shot that the deer didn't move upon the arrow being released? Not all, but most do drop and start to bolt. If that is true, then where you are actually aiming is not where the arrow is going to hit (let alone any twigs that deflect in flight, etc). When I stop fussing over my anchor and let it be more natural (3 under or split) and just make it one element of the shot cycle, I got a lot more happy and lost zero on my accuracy, in fact my frequency of an errant arrow drop significantly (less than 1 in 20 at 20 yards with 45#, 55#, 65# recurves and longbows). Moral of the story... stop having OCD. and you will enjoy the hunt far more. Ok... let the rants begin.

I don't understand this. It's very rare that I anchor at all and I stick holes in everything. Throughout history most archery has been instinctive and has lacked anchor. More than half my shots are rapid fire from any manner of cant and I might be on the move. Less than ¾ are at full draw length. No problems

@@robertcarte95 I think it might just be the way we are shooting. My dad's dad came off the reservation. I had to sneak around and set traps and ambushes and shoot well. On whitetail and smaller it's a lot of headshots inside 20 yards, more in the heart, lungs if we need the meat bad. Outside of 20 yards is always hearts/lungs, maybe just lungs if we need the meat bad. It's been a very long time since we had to have the kill to get meat. Bigger than whitetail is all hearts and lungs. Haven't lost an animal since the 90's. That was a bad rifle shot I never should have attempted. Used a buddy's big bore and tried to do something stupid. Black bear, whitetail, elk, moose, mule deer, nilgai, hogs all of the small stuff. I don't shoot what I won't hit but I really think it's the way we learned. It seems like you learned something like what my family might call Olympic style or target style. I learned crouching and kneeling and sitting, on the move etc. I'm a lot older now so I'm less active by a bit but still pretty sneaky. Try getting someone to throw or kick a milk jug and you shoot it while it's moving. That how we trained for hunting and fishing when we weren't training on actual hunts.
