Split Finger or Three Under, does it matter?

Спорт

Do you shoot three under or split finger? Does it matter in traditional archery? Is split finger better than three under? A look back, archery discussion and t-shirt give-away today. / catholichackstradition...
I’m coming up on my one year anniversary of this traditional archery channel, so, in addition to discussing whether or not split finger style of string grip is better than three under style, I thought we would also enjoy a few clips from the videos we have posted over this past year. Additionally, I’m giving away a t-shirt just to say THANK YOU for being apart of this community.
Check out my t-shirts here shop.spreadshirt.com/catholic...
Why discuss split finger vs three under? Well, I switched from split, Mediterranean style, to three under this year and I have received a few questions about that. I thought it might be good to chat about it since I know there are many in this community who have a preference for one or the other and will contribute to the conversation.
In this video I explain some basic differences between the three under and split finger style as well as why I made the switch, giving three points. As always, let me know your thoughts in the comment box!

Congratulations on the first year Joe! it's always the first thing I watch on a Friday morning ( here in the UK). I shoot split, but as with most things in Traditional archery, there is no right or wrong it's what works for you. As long you are hitting your target and shooting consistently and safely, use which ever you are comfortable with.

Joe congratulations on your anniversary, and thank you for your time. Well I did what you recommend. I played around with both all while having fun and settled in on split finger. My hunting partner did the same and he settled in on three under. You were right, it's what feels good to the individual and making it consistent. Thanks again!

I learned split, that's what feels right. I can shoot 3 under just fine, but it doesn't feel right and I can feel off forearm tension for my ring finger. Probably just a weak muscle not strengthened because I don't shoot that way. Feel familiarity and control with split. Good job on the year of the channel. I was like "no way Joe's been making videos for a year" then remembered you separated your original channel's content. Wow, one year goes fast, you're definitely owning this channel as an archery channel. Can't believe this channel was just created a year ago...

I am 82 years of age and took up field archery two years ago. I am also left eye dominant which has created quite a problem and I am still trying to work out the best way to overcome this. Tried almost everything but eventually gone back to both eyes open. I use a Falco Spirit LOngbow at 37lb and a Hoyts Formula Recurve at 36 lb. With the Longbow I use split with a draw length of 26 inches. (Still working on my anchor point) and I use three under on the recurve but haven't measured the draw length yet, thinking it would be the same. I'll do it this week and see if I can get that important extra inch :-) Would love to win that shirt :-) but I live in South Australia :-) Regards Frank

i thought so too, but there is a thing. you could tie a knot (well, a thicker knocking point basically), so you could hold an arrow by pressing it between your finger and knocking point. but was it actually done so, i have no idea...

  • @rtoguidver3651

    @rtoguidver3651

    3 жыл бұрын

@@Voidlord1 That could work, but if you loose pressure against the knot the arrow will fall and the deer gets away.. One over two under keeps the arrow in place, but arrows now snap on so three under will work and have a nock on the string so the arrow is in the same place each time. I still use Old School, but only compete w/ myself now, that way I always win.. My nock is a black sharpie mark on the string..- Very Old School !

Joe, congrats at the anniversary. I shoot 3Ds and rules state that you must shoot split for my class. I find that I can anchor against side of nose with top two fingers and third finger on corner of my mouth, reckon two anchor points better than one (not sure what would happen if I got fat face though!). Agree that it doesn't really matter as long as you are consistent. Replacement Bear SK 64" finally arrived, really amazing looking bow, limbs and tips are narrower that old SK, feels faster. I'm a split finger guy, even though I mainly gap shoot. I just get a much more consistent and smoother release than using three under. Don't know why. I suppose I could work with a coach and spend lots of time and/or money and work through the issue. But its just easier to shoot split finger and compensate for the bigger gap. As long as the rest of my shot cycle is good, I'll hit the target. Congrats on the one year anniversary! I really do love your channel. St. Sebastian, pray for us.

Here are two cents to buy some food for thought:: split is the best otherwise Olympic archers would be using 3 under , but they dont .3under it puts uneven pressure on the hand and wris, and the string dont line up in the finger joints and if your not string walking it makes no sense using it unless your bow is tillered for the uneven use of force . the higher anchor of 3 under also means it better for shooting down on thing at closer ranges

Hi Joe, 36 years of bow hunting using split finger. Today I tried 3 under. It’s 2018 March. And I have found I have wasted 36 years using split. Three under is awesome. I used to see Americans using 3 under, and think they were stupid. I was wrong. Now I’m on fire. Regards Robert. Western Australia.

As usual, Joe I am looking forward to your latest video. I've always shot split finger, anchoring on my tooth. I have played with shooting 3 under but my draw seemed wrong and the bow seemed to pull unevenly. Maybe didn't give it enough time, maybe I wasn't happy with the results to bother pursuing it. My personal opinion is that as you were saying if it works, if you are hitting consistently, go with it. God Bless on your 'anniversary'. Tim

For awhile now I have been anchoring on my incisor tooth, a hard location because I realized that just at the corner of my mouth created too much variation. By the way, I wanted to mention how much I appreciate your dedicating your videos to Gods' word, there isn't enough of that going around.

Hi Joe, nice to see you you again, I prefer split finger, I Suppose it's feels more natural (to me) but I like to feel that the nock is on the string and hasn't dropped off! had this a couple off times shooting in cold weather with numb fingers, so it's the same as a 'dry fire ' shoot well mate

Great video, joe! I've always shot split finger, and I'm an instinctive shooter. Just last week I started playing around with three under. Immediately I was shooting tighter groups, I assume for two reasons, closer eye-hand coordination alignment but also I noticed with three under the cock feather touches my nose when I fully engage my back tension. I think this gives me a fourth reference point to my three point anchor which helps to lock the position and angle of my head in a more consistent and repeatable way. Unfortunately, as I continued to shoot three under the close proximity of the arrow to my eye began to distract my instinctive shooting and my groops began to unravel. Needless to say I've been going back and forth with up and down results. However, I've taken a lesson from three under and have been working on my head alignment with split finger to still achieve the cock feather reference to the tip of my nose. Still a work in progress!

I shot today for the first time ever . I bought a Sinoart recurve 58" 40 lb draw bow . 70 years old and just loved it . Shot low at 20 yards till I moved my knoking point down and now can hit a 14 by 16" target every time .it'll take awhile to buid up the left arm strengh to be able to hold the bow steady on the target . Happy being Mennonite !!!!!! Sorry , I like the three under with a tab . Tried the glove but seemed awkward to me .

As much as I like 3-under, I have been forced to get properly comfortable with Split-Finger because I wear glasses. I have to have the string further from my glasses so that I don't mess with my vision, or worse break my glasses when I release. A big part of why I switched to split and even anchoring with my thumb, is because I destroyed a pair of glasses shooting 3-under when the string caught on release.

Split finger/split vision, just feels right for me .... I tried three under, but I would shoot accurately for a short time before losing it, and start shooting like crap. I found that when I switched back to split finger it was much easier to find my anchor point. Because, when I used three under, my anchor point ended up being my index at the corner of my mouth. And felt almost not existent compared to using split. When I shoot split finger, my anchor is middle finger to corner of my mouth and index finger to the crease of my cheek. So that's really two anchor points. Weird, pretty much opposite of your situation, and it's easier to "sight" down the arrow like you said. Thanks Joe!

I quite like the Split finger mainly because I feel like I have a better grip on the string and arrow , however releasing the arrow is a slight hassle with the finger above the arrow , so I might try the thumb release soon as I heard it was very effective.

I shoot 3 finger with my thumb pinched against the tip of my little finger. Middle finger locks in the corner of my mouth. Pointer finger at my cheek bone. Bend of thumb at point of my jaw. Have always shot instinctive like firing s shotgun. But consistently in anchor and length of draw, plus lots of practice has always been the key for me. Pull, anchor, pause, let everything come to s stop, release. Sometimes I even shut my eyes before the release. I get a lot more pleasure out of traditional archery than any other way. Pure hand eye coordination, simple, and the old bows, unlike modern compounds or cross bows, fit your hand like an extension of yourself.

Split, because: 1. I started with split finger :D 2. In bush arrow doesn't fall off 3. Bow is much quieter 4. With three under first arrows I shoot better, but when I get used to it, the accuracy will be same. 5. If I use same anchor, on long distances split finger works better 6. Draw length is a little bit longer with split finger 7. Fred Bear was shooting also split finger - just kidding :)

To your point, I shoot split finger because I've ALWAYS done it that way. I'm sixty years old, and learned split finger shooting back in the 6th grade. I've been an EXTREMELY intermittent archer over the decades, buying my first decent recurve bow (45# Darton) in 1981 used at a gun show. I shot it intermittently over the years, especially when my son was in Webelos scouts years ago, but there have always been many year intervals when my bow collected dust. Last year, or maybe the year before, I got a 'wild hair" and started buying bows, some low draw weight recurves that I was hoping my wife would shoot (she hasn't) and then found an interest in longbows, especially after seeing your channel, and a channel by Mick Grewcock in England who is a novice bowyer and MASTER video smith! My current favorite is a 60# 68" OMP Sierra, which I can shoot straighter than any of my lighter weight bows including a 25# (or so) Browning. Seeing how your fingers press UP on the knock, causing downward pressure on the arrow shelf, I causing me to re-think my style, and to research 16 strand 68" AMO bowstrings... GREAT video, Joe, and if you haven't, please check Mick's page out. He maintains that he is a poor archer and only a novice bowyer; I sense traditional English understatement. In any event, God bless!

I switched from split to three under because of two reasons: pointer finger pinch on the nock and the physical reason that the middle of the string is 2 inches below the nock point... try bringing the bow upside down horizontal holding the bow on the string with your finger... where is the bow in level? Yes, 2 inches below the nock point...

My lifelong passion have been longbow and recurve bows, and in 2019 I still shoot 2 to 4 times weekly. I use split fingers on stick bows. I have compound bows and a 150 lb. Ten Point crossbow with a scope, but if I could only choose one type, it would be a longbow or recurve bow🎯

I've recently gotten in to horseback archery and I've been using the Slovic draw over the thumb draw. It's a bit like the 3 finger but your index is placed along side the arrow to hold it in place where as the thumb draw the side of your index is pressing into the arrow when wrapping around your thumb. The key thing is you don't have to break your grip at all to wrap your thumb around the string when loading. My draw and release feels way better, though I'm shooting a 50# Kaya Windfighter so that probably affects my taste in draw styles.
