    I’ll be honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Spiritbox at first, and I think it’s just because I didn’t get it. It was something new, a blend of different influences, but completely fresh all at the same time. Over time, though, they grew on me, and are probably one of my favorite bands currently. This song... This was MASSIVE.

    100% agree with you guys on Courtney being a next level person in this industry. She's just on another level. We gotta need more of this good bands because of the talent, and less bands on the "just a purposely good looking chick with some musicians on the back side" kind of band. Congrats to Spiritbox on their talent. This song was on repeat all day long for me. I LOVE this pop-catchy "blessed be"'ish vibe in it and those damn riffs man... And this damn Breakdown! Chills all day. What a friday guys. Love your content!

    I remember back maybe two years ago Courtney and Mike said in a podcast/interview that the reason Spiritbox was so different from their work in IWABO or their previous bands was they are getting older and this is now the kinda music that really resonates with them. I've had such a similar experience in my aging (i'm now 35) where I grew up listening to really complex and fast paced music that often resembled a riff salad rather than an emotive, fleshed out song. Although this song could have used a guitar solo right before the breakdown...I still really enjoyed it. I do think Blessed Be was a slightly stronger track...but I enjoy this song and love the big open chords on the chorus with the light lead line over the top. The end of the song is definitely the highlight for me. When her vocals get an almost crowd chant sound with multiple layers and Mike's layering in leads under it its good shit. Super stoked for this record and their future. I know some like the more proggy tracks from their older EPs but Im really enjoying this more mature and emotive style they've got going now

  • @AdamMcCann1178

    @AdamMcCann1178

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah this track is definitely more... formulaic? And I don't mean that to knock it. It's just that the structure is fairly conventional. I'm definitely interested what the rest of the album ends up sounding like because I'm wondering how it will average out. We've got "Holy Roller" on the heavy end and "Constance" on the "light" end, so average on the general mood is somewhere around this or "Rule of Nines." As for technical instrumentation, "Constance" sounds like their recent peak, and it kept away from the whole verse>chorus>verse>chorus>breakdown>chorus thing a bit as well. Though none of it has been as prog as the first EP. It's not going to upset me too much if none of that comes back, though I'd like to see it return in some form. I do really like this song and "Blessed Be" but I don't want it to become predictable. They've shown the emotional/mood range with these last four singles, and I had a feeling this one would return to balance after the juxtaposition of "Holy Roller" and "Constance," so hopefully next they'll show us how creative they can be in that middle ground they spend most of their time in.

  • @muaddib4329

    @muaddib4329

    @@AdamMcCann1178 agreed. I do think this song was a little....safe? formulaic is fair as well. The material they put into the formula was great but I don't want them to fall into the "radio format" too hard.

    Yo! You dudes are great! Real love for music and "the scene" as it were. You're assessment of this song is spot on. Just wanted to chime in on :Courtneys heavy vocals bit: You should watch their studio footage and pay attention to "the way" she sings the heavy vocals. There's like, little to NO strain in her neck and like, "head voice". Shes doing it great AND in a way that has *longevity*. You look at the likes of other contemporary metal vocalists and most of them can't scream the way they used too. You've no doubt heard fans say "oh, their softer now". I'm willing to bet good money that she'll be able to be this flexible vocalist for a good long while. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. I look forward to be introduced to some bands by you guys in the future as well as hearing/enjoying music we all here. love so very much! -Cheers from NY

    Cheeky bastards taking down the first vid (guessing it was for audio) You listen to Courtney's one take videos from start of last year then you listen to the Spiritbox Sirius XM set from the start of this year, Courtney has been doing a metric buttload of work on her vocals to make them even more powerful and her growls even deeper. Can't argue with a music vid in 4K either, that was an experience! Love this band, Mike the guitarist is an absolute riffy, groovy beast. My only issue with this song is that it has released on the same day as Gojira's album and Gojira's The Chant just refuses to leave my head. Either way, this song deserves a dual nipple salute.

    Her ability to scream is so fucking great! She's just so great, whether cleans or screams, it's just all amazing. Obviously the band is great, but I'm still blown away by her voice. Though I don't know that her being a woman needs to be, like, forefront in the discussion of how amazing she is. Woman can scream as well as men, whether or not the person's biology tends to allow for lower or higher screams. Regardless of what she is "naturally" able to do, her skill and talent and hard work have allowed her to fucking annihilate those vocals, no matter the subject or setting.

    They probably know about Jinjer already ..but good if they do react to some Jinjer songs. I feel like I'm the winner cause some people have preference to either jinjer or Spiritbox but in my case I love both bands. Both are amazing.. really skilled musicians and strong,smart women on vocals. Btw Tatiana and Courtney are friends.

    By their standards, this is fairly bland. A bit disappointing tbh. Nothing's bad, it's just not as good as they can be (and have been). Heavy sections and that last rendition of the chorus were easily the most interesting parts. As someone who likes the material from their EPs it's also a bit underwhelming to get a 5th successive single that fits an obvious verse-chorus structure. Their willingness not to adhere to conventional structure was a big part of their appeal pre-Rule of Nines. Their stuff since then is still good, even excellent in the case of Rule of Nines and Blessed Be, but it'd be a shame if that adventure and experimentalism were to be lost from their sound. On her vocal depth, from what I've seen in a couple of interviews, she's got a fairly deep speaking voice for a woman which must have something to do with why she's able to get to a lower harsh reigister than many female vocalists who step into the harsh/screamed world (says someone who is in no way a vocal coach or other relevant expert).

    Agree with everything you said. Both video and song were very uninspired to me. The song structure was the most predictable as well, her cleans during the heavier section at the end was good. I don’t think her voice has anything to do with her lows though, I mean, Tatiana from Jinjer has one of the most feminine speaking voices but has the lowest, most insane growls out there.

    I can totally see where you’re coming from, but one thing to keep in mind is that this is a single, so I dare say there’ll be some more proggy spaz core type moments mixed through the album

    @@johnnyneedham9831 Which is fair, a band doing a more mass appeal single is hardly a unique phenomenon. I don't even need them to be super proggy and technical, I just really adore when they don't stick to a conventional structure which is pretty much everything they did pre-Rule of Nines. This now marks a 5th successive release where they've adhered to the convention and that's where the worry starts to creep in that they might have re-oriented their song writing. It could prove to be absolutely ill-founded when the album drops.
