So after all of my comments on this channel about there only being ONE female metal vocalist that I think kicks a$$, a bunch of people challenged me to react to a Spiritbox track.. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

    I would suggest the following spiritbox songs: - holy roller (official video) - rules of nine (one take live performance) - blessed be (official video) Older songs like the mara effect, constance or hurt you are still good but for some reasons they didn't resonate to me much, they're "just" good songs to me, while the three above are all masterpieces to me.

    We suggested it, you checked it out, and you enjoyed it. Ahh, love to see it! As much as I hate to say it, I don’t always love female metal vocalists either. In fact, I dislike more than I actually like. I used to be a music journalist/critic, and I think I got exhausted by the symphonic metal female vocalists (Nightwish, Epica, etc). (I acknowledge their talent, but the music isn’t for me.) I had a period of time when I wouldn’t even listen to a female-fronted metal band with an open mind because I was SO tired of that sound. Either it was symphonic metal…or it was bands like Cerebral Bore (when Simone Pluijmers was with them). There were very few bands in between those with vocal diversity that I enjoyed. Straight Line Stitch was the first for me. I actually passed on Jinjer the first time I heard them (“Sit Stay Rollover”) because I was so jaded then. Thankfully, I rediscovered them (and reaction channels) thanks to LostInVegas several years ago-and I’m so glad I did. But then Tatiana set the bar SO damn high, which is why I still struggle with female-fronted metal (and don’t like Infected Rain). Spiritbox may be my only other exception at this point. ANYWAY…glad you checked out Spiritbox! “Holy Roller” is a must. (There’s a one-take of it as well.)

    I'll take a look at it! And I understand what you mean completely. I always found the symphonic metal thing to be cheesy, and the rest I found to be annoying quite frankly. I love female vocalists, but metal is a dark / heavy / angry genre - testosterone does dark / heavy / angry better imo LOL. And yeah - Tatiana set the bar FOR SURE, and so far no female in metal is touching it. ..this was solid though. I like Courtney, so like I said: that's 2 female-vocal metal bands I actually like now lol. Thanks again Jen!

    It's not at all a bad thing that Spiritbox reminds you of EDM and/or other non-rock genres. Courtney has stated it many times that her influences include a lot more musical genres than just metal. They also have a lot of electronic production in their songs. This is one of the things I love about them, they're not afraid to get inspiration from all over the place and actually innovate. At a time when so much metal sounds alike, it's like a breath of fresh air. It's what this genre needs.

    Agreed! Digging Spiritbox. That Firebird sounds cool for sure. That Tele isn't as old as it looks - it was purchased new sometime after 2000 - it's a Fender factory relic edition, which I'm not usually a fan of (I like to let guitars age naturally), but that guitar has a very special sentimental value to it. It was my friend's guitar who was the singer in the last major band I was in, who sadly isn't with us anymore. Figured I'd honor his memory by making his guitar part of the videos on this new channel.

    For other female vocalists that have killer growls/screams, check out the vocalists of the bands Rolo Tomassi, Obscure Sphinx, Oathbreaker and Battle of Mice. They don't all sound like Tatiana or Courtney, in fact they vary in styles quite a lot, but I don't think it's fair to prescribe one style in which metal vocals are supposed to be delivered. I personally even tend to appreciate more vocalists who have an unusual approach that can set them apart from others. Here's one song from each of the above bands that I think nicely showcase their heavy vocal abilities: Rolo Tomassi - Rituals Obscure Sphinx - Lunar Caustic Oathbreaker - Needles in Your Skin Battle of Mice - Bones in the Water

  • @InsomniacReacts

    @InsomniacReacts

    2 жыл бұрын

    I will check those out. As for your comment though, I respect your right to have an opinion 100% (regarding the style in which metal vocals are supposed to be delivered) but I completely disagree. Vocalist can (and SHOULD) have a vocal signature of their own, their own touch / unique way of approaching everything from their vocal techniques to the way in which they use those techniques to compliment the music they're on, but most metal genres are HEAVY (as they should be) in a way where a majority of those bands evoke more of a dark emotion / feel via many techniques (both rhythmic and melodic) - this calls for a deeper / darker / more powerful vocal tone. High-pitch / shallow vocals and screams, which are what most women (not all, of course) are going to more often deliver, don't mesh with the emotion most metal genre styles call for, in my opinion. FOR EXAMPLE, to take it out of the sphere of metal for a minute.. Reggae. Would a highly-talented female vocalist with an opera-style vocal work for a classic-style Reggae band? Reggae vocals are supposed to be delivered a certain way. Anyway, just my opinion. Good discussion lol

  • @_SaraZ

    @_SaraZ

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@InsomniacReacts For me, as long as the vocal performance invokes emotion, it's a go. And it's difficult not to invoke emotion when you're screaming your heart out-screams are magical in that sense, we're evolutionally tuned to respond to them. You're certainly right that the key ingredient is the power/solid breath support behind the growl or scream, but as long as they're delivered in a convincing way, I think heavy vocals can do many things. Some can sound aggressive, while others are more scary or harrowing. All have a place in my heart lol.

    I want to be honest, even if we didn't think of Spiritbox, to say that only Tatiana from Jinger makes gutturals or includes that "essence" of metal, seems more like a lack on your part in knowing the genre than a reality. Just thinking that Jinger is a perfect representative already seems pretty daring to me, because Jinger is a good band and has amazing musicians, but it's also from the lighter side of metal, it's not Brutal Death Metal, it's not Doom Metal, it's not Deathcore, and therefore, their music is not so "heavy or brutal" no matter how hard they try, therefore the same happens with Tatiana's voice. And that is the issue, that is why Jinger is also as famous as Jinger and everyone asks for reactions from them, because their music is easier to listen to because it is not so heavy, myself when I want to listen to something light, calmer , I listen to them, but, if you wonder, are there women in the other subgenres? Yes, there are women who sing in Brutal Death Metal, in Doom, in Deathcore, in Black Metal and they are just amazing and really brutal, so no, Tatiana is not the only or the best to make a brutal sound. As for its gutturals, it is only the best known and most popular.

    I watched that Lorna Shore one take. REALLY GLAD I didn't do a reaction on it - would have lost some subs lol. It was so bad on so many levels that I couldn't finish watching it.

    @@InsomniacReacts most people I've seen in comments liked better than the original video. But everybody has their own taste I guess. It's definitely acquired taste lol.

    I'm a drummer and yes everyone has their own taste but i do agree, the drums on this album to me sound over processed

    You hit the nail on the head with the drums. Zev Rose, the drummer is playing a traditional acoustic kit. I guess they processed the hell out of the drum tracks due to the fact that they are only a 3 piece instrumental band (drums. guitar and bass). Zev Rose does have a live video of the drum track of this song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIF_msh9gLbJkag.html

    1st of all, its a long comment, im not a native so it might be quite hard to read xD. You cant go wrong with their songs. If you want smth heavier Holly Roller, Aphids, Silk in the Strings are probably the hevaiest, not clean vocals at all. I also recommend checking out the one take versions, if there is one ofc. For the next video you have to react to The Mara Effect Live at Silverside Sound, the best song ive ever heard. If you want to hear another female vocalist - Alissa White from Arch Enemy is a fucking beast as well. Some of my favs - War Eternal, a reason to believe, a fight I must win. She rarely does cleans in her curret band sadly. So you need to listen to her prev band The Agonist - Thank you pain, Panophobia to hear her range. Btw. I hate the fact that ppl are comparing her to Tati. They have completly diff styles. And Courtney is unarguably the best 💙

    You're the second person to recommend The Mara Effect Live at Silverside Sound so I'll check it out for sure. Regarding Arch Enemy - I'm very sorry to say that I've tried to like them for MANY YEARS now and I just can't stand them lol. I don't like the vocalist OR the band very much, so I'm gonna skip them so I don't piss off their fans lol.

    About half of their music is heavy, half is more like this, with moments of heavy, but overall more of a “mainstream” appeal to it. Courtney’s husband writes all the instrumentation, and plays guitar. The drums are all programmed, as are most drums nowadays.

    Ah OK good to know. That's great because then I didn't insult a drummer lol. As a side note though, there are still plenty of metal bands that record live drums but they layer samples over the actual kit. Wasn't sure if this was that situation or not, so thanks for clearing that up.
