The thrust washer as you call it, is also known as the spool spacer and increasing or decreasing its thickness, helps improve line lay on the spool, and also provides a low friction surface for the spool to sit on, which needs to be lubricated lightly from time to time, but i am not sure that it will cause the drag knob to get tighter. However as you say, there could be something wrong in the drag stack.

Thanks for watching and commenting, Owen! There could have been an issue with the drag stack, in theory. Regarding the spacers, they work a little differently in these reels than, say, a Shimano Baitrunner 8000D.... one doesn't really put more than one of these thrust washers on these Spinfishers. They are supposed to be self-lubricating, and adding lubrication to them, while not the end of the world, effectively reduces the total drag of the reel. Thanks again for contributing, Owen. More vids to come.... Spread the word about the channel. Barry.

May be, the drag washers is worn out? Total height of the drag washers packet is reduced, drag knob dives deeper into the spool and gets a contact with it, so they rotate together. Of course, this does not explain why everything suddenly started working... / Возможно, фрикционные шайбы изношены? Высота пакета шайб уменьшилась и гайка фрикциона соприкасается со шпулей, вращая её. Конечно, это не объясняет почему все заработало после переустановки шайб под шпулей...

Thanks for watching! It didn't just start working. I explained why it was the thrust washer in this case.... although I'll never argue when something just starts to work without me knowing why. Regarding the height of the drag stack, I don't really see how that could cause it, unless there was corrosion or the metal grooves for the hex metal washers were damaged, and they started "slipping" when the spool turned..... even then, I'm not sure that's a thing.

The reason why the drag knob assembly replacement works is because the screws holding down the plate in the knob assembly are too tight. Theres a little clicker in that thing that might be getting worn down over time and influencing the tolerances. Nothing wrong with the big spring. I loosened up my screws by like half a turn in the drag knob assembly and now my drag knob works great without auto tightening. I lost two tuna from this issue where all of a sudden drag gets turned to 55lbs instantly and my line snaps. But yeah, replacing the knob assembly can also work if this is the issue and may be the better long term solution.

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. It's good to hear your fixed worked for you. There's no clicker in these drag knobs, so maybe you're referring to a different reel, but, yeah, I'm not entirely sure what happened here.... so any suggestions as to solutions are welcome. I call these things ghosts in the machine.... sometimes, you disassemble and then reassemble, and everything works, even though you didn't really do anything. It could be the interaction of the "inner" outer edge of the gold piece on the base of the drag knob is interacting with the top of the spool, which, in turn, helps cause the drag knob to turn with the spool.... so maybe the the thrust washer was riding too high, thus pushing the spool up higher than it should have been? Possibly an issue with the orientation of the drag washers, which I should have checked (can't remember if I did), but unlikely since the system worked properly in the end. 🤷‍♂ AHHHHHHHH..... I love talking through these things!!!!!..... maybe the retaining spring wasn't properly set in the little groove it should have been in, and was pressing/pinching against (and locking) the drag knob so that when the spool turned, the drag knob would turn also.... then when I took the spool off, the spring fell properly into place and the rest was history! I like that reasoning..... think that'll be my winner for likely what happened with this reel.

Hey brother! Yes, they were.... I checked them after getting the spool to work properly..... I should have mentioned there could have been damage to the gold top area of the shaft that could also aid in error..... I've seen this on softer gold ones (rounding) and on some Shimano Sustains (corrosion).

I just discovered your channel after falling fishing the jetty’s and landed on my Shimano Stella fj 5000. It seems I bent the shaft and when ever I feel it gets sticky when the spool makes it to the bottom. I’ve watched some videos and the work you do is amazing how can I get in contact with you ? I would like to fix this reel 😢

Thanks for checking out the video and the love! Sorry to hear about your reel. Yes, there's a chance the shaft is bent, and causing the hesitation. Sorry, I'm not taking service requests at this time. Please support your local repair shops or try using my videos to help you along, if you're comfortable working on the reel yourself.

Thanks for watching! The beauty is, when it's your reel, you can do whatever you want. Truth of the matter is, if you grease the HT-100's above, some of that will work it's way down onto the Teflon drag washer.

That spring probably goes bad because people don't loosen the drag after fishing. It also compresses the drag washers constantly.
