    Whoooaaa I can’t believe how cool and deep and smart you are. You took what the writers wrote and like typed it out in words and it was like whaaaat the bully was a bad guy, and the spider made his insides bad, and so now it’s like yeah the guy’s metaphorical bad insides are now a literal bad inside so it’s like whaaaat that’s so crazy and deep and just so cool wow man. I love it. Can we get you a job as a Marvel writer? I think you’d be just as talented as the person who wrote Disney Star Wars or Multiverse of Madness or The Room. It’s just so cool how you were able to write out the thing the writers also wrote out. The guy was always a monster, but now he’s a spider monster. It’s so genius and like just cool and deep how more people aren’t freaking out and in pure awe and super impressed with this is unreal. Think about it. This bully guy was bad at the start right? But then he became this spider monster thing, and then his INSIDES became bad, and so this means that now he’s like both bad on the inside and the outside…wait when did he get bad on the outside? Oh yeah yeah he was always bad so yeh that was him being bad on the outside and then the spider turned his inside bad. Yeah sorry I missed it for a second but yeah we’re all set it now. Damn that’s so cool and deep and smart. I wonder if the writers even realize this or if it’s just you’re so smart as a commenter than you’ve elevated their work into a new level by stating how the monster turned him bad on the outside or inside or whatever and than that made the monster become bad on the monster’s inside which means that the monster was actually good the whole time. Omg 😱 I can’t believe I just put that together I’m so deep holy crap I have to go write this down. The monster was actually a good because of the bad being multiplied against the inside of itself this made it become good but it was actually good the whole time omg 😳 this is making so much sense now. I have to start writing my own comic now

    He could have done any number of things, he existed as a hoard of spiders, the government would love to have someone on their payroll who could infiltrate not only a single enemy base but several at once. At minimum if he played his cards right he was looking at becoming a valuable government contractor, information gatherer, and maybe even assassin, instead he chose to be petty.

    The fact that he ate the spider instead of just receiving a bite from it really shows how much an over-achiever he is in the terms of jealousy. Dude literally picked on Parker for no reason because he just wanted to do it for no reason, and when he sees Peter gain superpowers he then thinks he should've been the one to have them because he "deserved" to be a hero? Heck no. I'm pretty sure if he was the 1st person to get bit and gain spider man's powers he most likely wouldn't have used them for good anyway. If that was the case, I'd like to bet Peter would get himself bit by the spider as well just to take him down because that's what Peter is at his core between hero or villain. He'll always be the hero in his story

  • @Zack_Zander

    @Zack_Zander

    That actually happen in “Peter Parker had to destroy Spider Man”, where it takes place in a world where Flash Thompson was the one that bit by the spider. At first, Peter wanted to help Flash to be a hero. But when Flash started to take things too far, Peter created robotic spider legs similar to Doc Ock’s tentacle arms to stop Flash and then was recruit by the Fantastic Four. Even without getting bit by the spider, he is still capable of becoming a hero.

    Ennis actually likes Spider-Man from what I remember, so it makes sense the story ended up good while still being horrifying and edgy. When the man writes comics well, he really nails it. The problem is that he needs a team of other writers and editors around him to hold him back, cause otherwise he goes all in and his stories crash and burn spectacularly. It’s why the original comics for The Boys is so disliked, cause it wastes tons of good ideas in favour of gratuitous sex and violence just for the sake of showing the Supes as depraved, without any nuance that the show luckily added. Then there’s Crossed, which I’m too terrified to read myself cause I’ve heard it’s much worse, which is a shame cause the premise interests me.

    Closest thing I ever found to an objectively evil power was in starship troopers where one of the giant bug eats brains with a spiked tongue and learns the knowledge held in the brain it ate. That was what made me side with the humans despite the directors intent. But as for Human equivalents to Carl look up spidersman (11580) or the bride of nine spiders for more heroic takes on the power of worms that walk. Also red mask from grant Morrison’s animal man. Tragic story.

    This story bothers me in such a minor way because like….it feels like instead of making Carl strong enough to pose a threat to spider man, if feels like they just made spidey weaker? Like, we’ve seen Peter lift trains, stop planes, and go toe to toe with some seriously badass villains, and Carl just don’t feel up to snuff. Don’t get me wrong, he absolutely COULD’VE been, he’s got an imposing and terrifying power, and his obsession with Peter is quite imposing, but he just didn’t seem like somebody who should be able to straight up BEAT him in a fight. I feel like this is most encapsulated by the restraints he puts on Peter because like…he has to “muster his strength” to bust out of a flimsy wooden chair and a bit of rope? I just don’t buy it.

    The Thousand's superpower really matches his personality. Strong but weak, seeking to be feared, instead of respected. The lies that he told himself (He deserves Spider-Man's powers, he had to eat his girlfriend, etc.) made him fall deeper into this depravation of attention seeking that turned into "plan B" (eating the spider that bit Peter), turning him into this villain that perfectly represents his imperfections & flaws. The Thousand is fear, but is afraid. The Thousand is strong together, but weak when by itself. It's a great story with a great narrative and an even more satisfying death.

    During this video when you were talking about the comic I was like “what the fuck?”. But not in a “what the fuck! This is terrifying but great!” it was more like “What the fuck were the writers thinking?”. Though when I saw the name “Ennis” which most likely stands for Garth Ennis, that explained a lot about the story.

    Everything else worked for a dark minor villain, but the heavy implication he had sex with his own father in the guise of his mother before transferring bodies was unnecessary. I also feel like while beating Peter with the element of surprise with his coworker’s body was one thing, the second fight shouldn’t have been so close. I could excuse the wooden chair with the paralyzing venom, but Carl doing well enough to give a smug speech over a wounded Peter feels kind of like Ennis doing his usual “Superheroes bad” thing.

    This is honestly one of my favourite Spider-Man comics/storylines, especially the ending! The Thousand wanted nothing more than to consume Parker and take his place as Spider-Man, getting all the recognition he thought he deserved. Yet, by the end of the story, he dies with barely anyone knowing he even existed.

    I haven't read all interpretations of Flash Thompson, but I'm pretty sure the variations I read would have kicked Carl's butt during high school for what Carl did. Flash was a bully in the teasing sense, but always had a moral center deep down, again, at least the variations I read. Carl was just a generic, uberdark-and-literally-nothing else villain with the same character traits and dialogue that we've seen over and over and over not just in Spider-Man, but in way too many comics way too often. I'm surprised that the character was killed off as he was, especially given that Garth Ennis created him, since many examples have this kind of character essentially winning in the end through pure forced narrative, so it was a nice and satisfying element to what was otherwise a generic "mature because how morose and cynical it is" plot.

    Honestly I loved the ending. It's so fucking well written, but I think it'd be interesting if a Thousand got a redemption arc. Think about it. Instead of being happy that he killed his mom, he could be terrified but still go on to try and kill Peter by distracting or disassociating himself but I feel Parker's the kind of guy to convince him to mature. The fun part is that he could go through all of the good-bad rankings because you don't change instantly. Him getting awful shit happening to himself in order to gradually mature would be realistic and unique.
