Specialized Crankset Restoration - An Oldshovel Short

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

These cranks were swapped out from the Ritchey Assent, from my rat bike build, with the Ritchey Logic cranks that I had on the Hudson Bay Rockhopper I restored last fall. It's time to clean them up, and customize them just a bit, before installing them on the Rockhopper.

    You've given me mountain bike fever. I've really wanted to restore one for the last month. My last project that I finished was a worksman newsboy which turned out pretty decent. I have most of the tools for restoring and fixing bikes all I need is decent paint and a bike to fix.

    This was a nice, uncommon touch to a very nice rebuild. I just spent the day helping a friend unkludge a kludged, road Savoy in exchange for a slim Jim beef stick. My friend likes to see unused bicycles in use and rolling again, too. I like carting my tools around to help people fix what they can not. I call it (my)'s Un-CoOperative Bicycle Shop.

    Interesting because I’m doing a lot of rebuilds at the moment and wondered about the chainrings. I spray.bike sprayed a KHS Montana Comp and the colour is lovely, the finish is good, but the paint chipped more than I’d have liked in the rebuild. Seems a bit soft, wonder if I sprayed too much though. Hope it holds up.

    I'm curious to see if this holds up... I was watching and saying over and over, you are getting rid of a lot of high level corrosion protection, plating/anodizing, etc. and replacing it with paint. Just wondering how that will look in two years...

  • @oldshovel

    @oldshovel

    I am interested also with the cranks. I’m learning how to anodize are home so I may be doing that in the future on these. The other cranks I’ve done this on have held up ok though. For the chainrings they were just painted before. The spray.bike paint may or may not be as durable as the original but it’s hard to say; I guess I’ll find out.

    @@oldshovel yeah, it's a shame. But I now have a donor frame to cut up for a cargo bike conversion project :-D I've been putting that off partly because I don't like cutting up an otherwise sound frame. And I've also found the Trek - Green/Purple fade 930 in True Temper OX Comp II - made in the USA. Which also needs welding, but it's nothing I'm concerned about for a quick and dirty build that can get me into the hills... The Marin was bright yellow, so when life chucks you a lemon, make lemonade I reckon!

    So I've recently started working on a few bikes myself to help with my quarantine time. They're nothing particularly great or amazing but I have a Gary Fisher Big Sur (1997 I think) that I snagged from a dumpster at an apartment complex I used to live at, a Giant Rincon (also 1997ish I think) that I fished out of the Charles River with a magnet, and my Mongoose Expert Pro from when I was a kid. These videos plus RJ The Bike guy have been great so I appreciate them. Would you maybe have any suggestions for someone that doesn't have a full on buffing wheel or gear to sandblast with those old cranks/sprockets?

    Sanding up to 3000 grit can do a lot but you won’t get a mirror polish without some sort of buffer. Using a car buffer and polishing compound may do it or a small buffing attachment on a drill or drumel tool.

    I think the hollowtech is a step up. I have square tapper on a lot of mine simply because they are vintage and I try to keep vintage parts when they are still in good shape and still useable with what I’m setting up.
