Restoring Tom's Crankset
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Tom Ritchey is a great influence on the cycling industry and culture. These cranks were on the mystery bike, and I plan on putting them on my next vintage mountain bike restoration build.

Nice project. Glad to see the "Tom was" edited to "Tom is" - he's still alive and kicking
I had this crankset on my Cannodale M2000 back in the 90s. Always loved the look of it.
Do you know what? This is by far the most professional video I've ever watched on youtube, the video editing, voice over and music was just perfect great work. By the way I've got no interest in cycling haha

Very awesome video on restoring an old three-piece crank
If you are in the San Francisco area, make sure to visit the Bicycle museum in Fairfax .The mountain bike exhibit is awesome. Ritchey and the rest of the guys from Marin have their stores and bicycles on display, it’s awesome!
Acid etching would make the lettering hold up better than paint but very nice job.
I absolutely love, the set of Ritchey rims/hubs, that I retrofitted last year to my ‘90 Rockhopper…..killer looking wheels!

I have a fantastic (my guess early 80's) Ciocc Italian ten speed. It has Shimano600 components, Italian frame and fork, and Mavic wheels. For some reason fitting tires on those wheels is super tight, and pretty difficult. It's in fine riding shape, but not pretty anymore. The first time I rode it I just felt like I was riding a beam of light. Thanks for the video!

TK Mair Different tires fit different rims differently, if that makes any sense. Even if theyre marked the same size. Its because of manufacturing tolerance and different standards. I had a Sun 26” rim that hardly any modern tire fits on easily. Ive seen the same issue with other Sun rims. You make need to try different tires. Thats what I had to do. Usually the skinnier the tire the tighter its gonna fit. Or your rim is on the big side of tolerance. You could try using a thinner rim tape as well. It really helps. I wrench in a shop. I see most of whats out there. I fix and sell lots and lots of tires!! Your rim isnt 27” is it? 27” is just a small amount bigger than 700c. Your bike sounds old enough to maybe have used 27”. If theres no label or marking the rim they might appear the same. That would make it extremely difficult to mount 700c tires!
Awsome background music
That's magic🤩

Sugino still makes really nice stuff. They’re not cheap either. Ive got some old Ritchey CX cranks. Square taper still works fine! I keep up to guys 1/2 my age riding all the ‘new and improved’ junk’!
@dudeonbike800

Same? No, not with the Ritchey bulge around the square taper. These were designed by Ritchey, sourced from Sugino to manufacture. Plus, these cranks are cold-forged. Most Sugino are not. Just their high end. And when you see a Specialized/Bianchi/Jamis/Kona/etc. frame, do you call it something else? Just because Specialized/Bianchi/Jamis/Kona/etc. doesn't actually make the frame?
You should get an airbrush for your decal work.

Yorghos Voutos I still use lots of this old stuff. It still works fine! I have an Old Santa Cruz made custom Bontrager frame, a few really nice Sugino cranks and some Ritchey stuff too. Back in the day, many smaller bike companies took their jobs more seriously before big corporate interests and marketing took over!
Great work on this! how did the cranks hold up since the polish? Did you have to re-polish periodically / apply a clear coat to protect it from corrosion/oxidation?
Had a set of these on my Saracen in the 90s, lightest available at the time although sadly the non-drive side cracked through the square taper hole.
Great job on giving those beautiful cranks, new life. Where or how do you find the font and sizing for the decals ?
You might try electro etching next time. Great job!
This was so good Im willing to forgive you on what you did to that beautiful Kona frame.

Jamesy 465 : Of course this is a great restoration process, but there is still a question of whether it is wise to install a crankset which is partially worn down (in terms of inter-tooth spacing) on a fully functional bike...

Kottel Kannim Thats why chainrings are replaceable. Sugino, who produced these cranks, make some of the finest chainrings you can buy!
What an awesome crank! I actually just got one of these in near perfect condition and was wondering what I can do to protect the logo from rubbing off. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
I’m expecting a sugino 75 in the mail soon and it has some scratches and shoe rub marks on each arm so I’m planning to restore it and polish it back up. Curious as to what grits of sand paper you used and around how long was the total sanding time? Planning to do everything by hand and hoping I can find someone with a buffing machine to borrow lol
Ive got a set of similar Ritchey CX cranks. Theyre made by Sugino. Nice stuff! Mine are worn from my duck feet and say ‘chey gic’ !
I have an idea for your next bike, about 10 years ago stripped an old bmx down to bare metal and then rubbed it down with gun blueing before clearcoating it and it came out awesome, I think a road bike done that way would look amazing
I was so happy with your video, in fact i thought what a nice video full of information...i should subscribe ..only one problem...i am already your subscriber...thank you for your videos...
Dang! Nice.
The way the other manufacturing marks are stamped into the metal, it would have been cool if you acid etched the Ritchey logo stuff before painting...that's just a fun idea shared...not a critique. I always love your restorations works and sharing.
@oldshovel
4 жыл бұрын
That would be cool.
Did you find a way to get the black paint to stick after or alternative? Kind regards, Jason
May I give you an advice. when cutting small detailed templates out of vinyl. use material washi sheets or washi tape material setting. the machine cuts slower and more precise. and use a higher adhesive vinyl thats sticks better, and clean the surface with a better solution. this way the end result is so more crisp
Where did you find the graphic file for the Logic logo. I need it!!
Loving your channel Can I just ask about when you a using the bench grinder for polishing; do you use a coarse, medium or fine buffing wheel to achieve the mirrored finish on the crank arms? And also what wheel were you using to finish the chainrings? I rebuild and restore bikes as a hobby, and am moving into more of the cosmetic side of respraying frames and polishing/buffing posts such as the cranks etc, and I would really appreciate some tips to point me in the right direction. Thanking you in advance 👍
Nice work! Question for you, what where you doing with the chainring at the 6:15 mark? Where you cleaning the chainring? If so what did you use for that on your bench grinder?
@oldshovel
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was using a wire wheel on the bench grinder to clean them up.
Have you found a way to re-shape worn chainring (and cog) teeth? Hard to find a good, original chainrings.
I've never had a problem with square taper, and the bb's are cheap and the different spindle lengths are great for Q-factoring. Also, I always replace the chainring bolts with the double hex key ones. I hate chainring nut wrenches.
Good Video i got a set White inDustry Crankset triple Ring Converted to 1x Forged Made in USA - not the Clone
Muito Bom seu trabalho
the nub on the chainring is supposed to be under the crank arm
@z1522

Which is exactly how he installed it, at 6:30. This keeps any dropped chain from getting wedged between the crank arm and the outer ring.
You bought new bolts but not new rings? Why? Also I was old to soak blackened objects in oil to make it stay.
You sure the cranks didn't have clear anodize? If you sanded for hours, you definitely removed the anodize.
looks great. I feel like you may have the middle chain ring in the wrong position as the point on the inner part of the ring is normally lined up with the crank arm like the peg on the outer chainring. unless on these chainrings the orientation doesn't matter in which case ignore me.
a year in, how did the spray painted logo hold up? good job as always
Did the same thing but just used autosol. For the branding, I would have used that label machine but in black and transferred the letters to the crank. Would last longer than paint.
Nice
These cranks are built to last. Have them on my 1992 Bike-Tech Japy MTB. fotos.mtb-news.de/p/1909376?page=3&in=user

Bob Joncas It not only saves money. Tried and true is the best. Older Japanese, (like these by Sugino) European and US made components and bikes were often made to much better standards and materials than todays mostly Asian made junk. Shimano and Sugino being some of the very few exceptions,in this mechanical inspector’s opinion! The old stuff can be made to last a real long time. I still use stuff made in the 80s and I ride lots! Theres even lots of new ‘high end’ stuff thats non ‘engineered’ junk!
You may want to use blue lock tite thread locker on the bolts...
Aluminium black, never head of it before, maybe this type of aluminium was a magic blend, or and anodised parts where thick stopping it from working. Maybe etching would have worked better?

Perhaps. Thanks for the thoughts.
Dammmmm that's too bad it looked soooooo good to not saying it didn't the 2nd time but it was just so clean the 1st time!

Nice work, but you have the large and middle chainrings out of alignment. The little point you see between one of the chainring arms should be aligned. Otherwise, great!
@trekkeruss
4 жыл бұрын
I was going to write that also. But it is only the middle ring that is out of alignment; the "timing" mark is meant to be opposite the arm. It cannot be behind the arm like most cranks because of the alignment of the spider.
@TheAcousticWarfare

trekkeruss It would only matter if youre using ramped and pinned cranks. Then you’d just have to compromise. Not too many companies make rings specifically for hidden arm cranks. Ive got a set of these similar Ritchey CX cranks I use on my singlespeed. Very nice cranks!! Sugino is one of a very few companies making cranks this nice today!
Are you a retro grouch?

Lol I hope not. I like both the old and the new. Sometimes I want to restore things to the way they were and sometimes I like to modify and modernize.
the bluing works that way only on basic steel, non on alu
I would not have overpolished the unit, as the alloy likely has an outer anodizing or coating which protects the aluminum from oxidation, and has the usual brushed metal look which is perfectly fine. Old chrome cranks may benefit from such polishing, but isn't ideal for this type and vintage.
