    That xtr derailleur might be the rapid rise version. The 97 S Works came with a 4 bolt strong arm crank set and had XTR hubs on mavic 221 rims. I do believe it was offered in two spec levels, the lower of which had the Manitou, and the higher with Judy SL (which was air, versus the coil spring manitou). Judy SL was the predecessor to the SID, which debuted in 99. I'm pulling that from memory, though. Back then, there were multiple versions of bikes with S-Works printed, the team versions and the factory versions.

    I had a m2 team. It was the best riding bike I've owned. It came with the titanium specialized stem, which I found not so good. Also the brake arch on the fsx are very prone to cracking. Keep the arch off the xc just in case. I love the builds😊

One day I'll be in the market for a new bike and my kid tells me two of the bikes I'm looking at, pivot and Santa Cruz are dentist bikes. Hope you guys have a great race season ahead. This is my kid last season riding nica. I don't know who's more sad, him or me. I love being at the races and watching the kids ride. It's exciting and peaceful.

    Lovely build, dream bike territory. I agree - the XT cranks don’t do it justice, otherwise very nice though. We should all take a minute to appreciate the times we live in. Your average person can now afford those 90’s bikes which were very much out of reach when they were new. And the kicker is - they still look and ride as good as they ever did. Keep ‘em coming Mr Shovel.. 👌

    I had a few of these back in the day, a couple still in my collection and featured on my channel. Wasn't a dentist, just a kid that worked in bike shops! My '99 S-Works looked very similar except by then M2 had given way to M4, and in the UK my equivalent carbon fork choice was a Pace. That bike took a beating and still runs today. Interestingly even the stock build didn't have full XTR. For some reason there was a mix of XT in there, and the crankset was a Specialized own brand, as were the hubs (S-Works badge engineered DT Hugi). Seatpost and stem were Ritchey on the 99 and Thomson on the '02.

    I don't remember lock on grips being a thing in the late 90s. Also, a friend of mine had one of these at the time and he was the manager of the local bike shop, not a dentist 😉 Edit: It might have been a year or two later than '97 as he was running the original RockShox SID (he bought it frame only so custom spec).

  • @ryanolinger639
    @ryanolinger639Ай бұрын

    The shim for the stem is likely a Specialized stem adjustment shim. These were pretty common with S in the 90’s - 00’s. Rotating the shim allows for about 2-3 degrees worth of adjustability. My Allez and both Stumpjumpers from this era had them. Even my 2015 Roubaix has one.

  • @oldshovel

    @oldshovel

    Ай бұрын

    It wasn’t a shim. The steer tube on the fork was too long and it has an extra pice of steer tube on top to make it long enough for the stem, the only thing really holding it on was the stem cap bolt which was extra long. Totally sketchy.

And I was able to swap all the innards of the fork to the ˋ99 Hydracoil system. I don't like elastomeres. And the original dampening cartridges are a pain and don't work too well with steel springs.

    I am a dentist and I have been mountain biking for over 20 years! Among the various falls I even broke my teeth!😁

    Excuse my ignorance, is a dentist bike a top of the line bike ridden by an amateur rider?

    "I don't know about you, but the dentist bike expression is starting to sound like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Holding dentists up as the quintessential high earners with all the best gear and none of the skills is seriously about a generation old at this point. Yeah, dentists generally make a comfortable living, but they're far from the top of the earnings scale these days. And in fact, most of the dentists I know don't mountain bike or do so minimaly because their hands are their livelihood, so they're pretty interested in minimizing the risk of injury. I suggest deleting the "dentist" part of the expression and inserting "PE guy", "cryptobro" or "VC dude", so least the earnings reference part of the expression will be appropriate for... this century" Quote from MTBR discussion forum. First thing that pops up when you search Dentist Bike. LOL!!

    @@oldshovel I'd actually never heard that expression so I looked it up. I thought it was funny. It reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry is an antidentite. Anyway, hope I run into you on the trails someday. Currently riding a 98 Specialized Rockhopper with Richie Nitanium tubing. I've enjoyed your videos.
