Home Anodizing Restoration on a Crankset & Stem - Raceface and Hussefelt

I'm always up for something new and learning how to anodize at home has been on my list for quite a while. I still have a way to go at learning how to make improve and hone my process but I am quite happy with the result on this restoration.

We’ll Done. I think it’s totally time for an anodized revival
I really like the format of this video!! Most diy youtubers talk way too much about useless shit, If I made a video I would keep it simple and to the point as you did!!
The best way not to keep making the same mistakes over and over again is to get them over and done with in the initial investigative phase. These videos are always really helpful. Many thanks for taking your time to make them.
"If at first you don't succeed; try, try again." Success is measured in the effort put forth to succeed! Sir, your efforts have been noted time and time again, and I'm sure perfection is very close! Thanks for more inspiration.

Thanks my friend
Reminded me those days when I tried to brew espresso - failure, analysis, next try, failure, analysis, next try, failure, analysis, next try, improvement, analysis, next try - until it went from uncontrollable process to satisfying routine. Very nice result and black chainring goes well with purple cranks!
Every single video on ur channel is like a piece of magic show ... you never know what's coming next 🙃
It's not really a mistake if it makes you learn something and progress! Kept you motivated pushing - thanks for taking us along.

Agreed. Thanks.
Damn. That's tidy. Good job! I've just dropped a couple of frames off to have a "Cerakote" treatement and while I was in the shop they had some AMAZING faded rims on display that turned out to be anodised (bronze to black). I was told how the finish of the metal needs to be absolutely perfect, or as close to, to get a good anodising finish so I can appreciate the prep work you've put in there!

Been so busy only just got around to watching this. My friend, I take my hat off to you...inspiration for many to get stuck in and have a go. I think they turned out slick great work as always. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and hard work.
That purple and black looks so good
Fail fast and often. Best way to learn, great job👍

Turned out great, you're a true jack-of-all-trades with your content!
Giving old things new life! Heck yeah... Its what i'm about also. Nice job!
Awesome! Art, music, science, engineering, business...doesn’t matter, you need to do it multiple times!
Great job ! That second run did the trick .That purple is awesome .Thanks old shovel
The parts turned out great. Thank you for sharing your "learning" process 👍
I have the original RaceFace Turbine crank on my '95 RM Equipe Frankenbike. It's my favourite bike part ever.
I really appreciate your work. I'm glad you're sharing your experience. Thanks
Dang. I was around for the first round of "purple madness," and I had a bunch of purple parts on an old hardtail TREK 930SHX that was all I could afford at the time. This was a nice throwback to those days! Thanks!
Good work. Not gonna lie but the Stem looked pretty awesome as polished chrome.
Love the way the cranks turned out .
Absolutely beautiful. Your skills, patience, and dedication is so admirable. Thank you sir.
I see that you have been venturing further.Keep up the great work!
Beautiful color at the end!!! thank you for showing the try and error process. Silver ring would work also great with that combination.
WOW! It looks so gorgeous. Thank you.
Absolutely awsome. This goes above and beyond just restoring parts. Love this video. Much love from the u.k.👍

I just learned hlthat Thomson has a new coating for their 7050 aluminum riser bars, Elite stem. Elite post and their seat post clamp. The sharper looking one is called Glacier 🤘🤘
I used to work for an outdoor lighting manufacture and in the late 80's early 90's just prior to powder-coating, we anodized everything. The fixture housings, arms and pole/bases. What I learned early on was you never want to hit the parts with a sand blaster because any porosity in the aluminum is going to capture more of the dye like a sponge thus making it blotchy. Sanding and polishing is not going to remedy this. You dont want to polish it because it seals up the aluminum too much, nor will you get in the tight spots and it will come out blotchy. The best anodize jobs are on freshly machined or extruded aluminum. Another happy medium would be to tumble the parts in a stone/chemical bath, as that's something else we used to do. This leaves the surface with a very even constancy thus allowing the dye to be even. And no, you cant anodize cast aluminum, only raw, machined, or extruded. Sorry so long, just brought back a lot of memories. Keep it up, you'll get it! (edit) I wonder if a far less evasive soda blast and then stone tumble would do the trick better?

What method would you use to re-color a new anodized aluminum bike part? I have three small covers and levers that I want to change the color from blue to black and would have preferred buying some from the manufacture (FOX), but they only make them in blue which does not fit the bike's color scheme. Thanks!!
@Asphaltsquadron

@@em1355 Easy, just have them powder coated.
@Asphaltsquadron
2 жыл бұрын
@@em1355 Also. are you sure its anodize? Very few use real anodize anymore. New powder coat process and colors look very similar to anodize. Even if it is you can powder coat right over anodize. We used to do it all the time for marine grade climates.

@@Asphaltsquadron Thank you so much for the quick response! This was very helpful, maybe basic for you, but when it comes to painting aluminum (actually any type of bike, car, or anything else) I am totally at a loss, therefore I have been viewing countless videos and asking for advice and I am glad that I did because you made it seem much more possible. Thanks again!!

@@Asphaltsquadron Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it!! I will double-check, but I looked at the full description (new bike 2021 with Fox 34 Performance Fork) and it says anodized, but will definitely double-check. The Powder Coat idea was mentioned by one of your commenters below and since both of you mention this, then I will look at this method. Great video, I really picked up quite a bit, although typically I don't have the time (inclination) to paint bike parts, in this case, after discussing with the manufacture (Fox - weren't very helpful) they stuck to their one color (blue) for caps/levers even though black is a better color scheme match for the majority of the bikes. Sorry, too much information, but at least you were willing to provide alternate solutions. Thanks again!!
Amazing work! Kudos!
Great job man! Congratulations!
Love the purple I've always wanted a purple bike.
So striking! Nice work sir!

Beautiful!!!
As you go, you will also find that different aluminium alloys will have a slightly different result depending on the elements used. Some work better than others and some are really stubborn requiring a different strength of electrolite and voltage to work. Also, consistancy can be difficult and no two batches are ever exactly the same! I look forward to what you're going to put these on!

After seeing this episode I went through my stash of old parts to find my trail-weary Cook Bros. cranks. I think I´ll follow your example. There´s just one thing that I´ll do differently. To restore the logo I use laser engraving as it appears to be the method used by the manufacturer back in the day.
Good job 👍

Thx for showing and sharing your (and our...?) learning process :-)
This was a well done video. Showing the trial and error aspect was smart and very informative. I have always wanted to learn how to do high level clear anodising (like Campagnolo used to do). The cost of the equipment used would be helpful as well. Thank you!
