Space Ghost Coast To Coast: Everything You Didn't Know | SYFY WIRE

Ойын-сауық

The most bizarre talk show of all time, featuring an anthropomorphic signing cat and murdering the Bee Gees on-air, remembered. Sometimes the facts are weirder than the show. P.S. Bjork is in this.

Kinda sad you didn't mention C. Martin Croker, who not only voiced Zorak and Moltar, he was also the principal animator, and even sadder that he died a couple years ago at the young age of 54.

Cartoon Network Latin American branch had a series of commercials called "Biografía Toon" with biographies of some cartoon stars, with Space Ghost being one of them. They explained what happened between the 60s show and coast to coast. Basically, he defended the universe so well there were no more villains to fight and capture, so the rating dropped (he went as far as releasing bad guys from jail just to capture them again) and the show got cancelled. He became a fat unemployed slob addicted to cheese cookies and vanilla ice cream with a massive pet rock collection, but it all changed when CN executives called him to host a talk show, as a matter of fact, the CN executives were the ones who captured Zorak and Moltar for the show. Check it out.

I bought a SGC2C poster on a trip in high school and kept good care of it. Once I got into college and beyond, I ended up at a few conventions with folks that worked on the show and started getting autographs. I only have like 3-4 signatures on it, but I had the chance to meet C. Martin Croker and he drew all over it. Like graffiti'd it up. Made it look like Space Ghost was trying to blast Zorak and snagged his own mom instead, knocking her tooth out and breaking her glasses. Then he apologized for getting carried away but said he had to charge me $10 for the signature still. I gave him more but not enough. There's not enough money for an awesome memory like that. If there's anything after this life, I hope to meet him again and thank him for everything one last time.

Just reread a Scooby-Doo Team Up comic where they team up w/ Space Ghost and his partners. They acknowledged this series by saying that “Space Ghost was hypnotized by Zorak and Moltar to run a late night talk show, but luckily he was able to snap out of it after 11 seasons.” While I don’t think that backstory is very accurate, I still think that it’s pretty funny!

I bet it's not too late to assemble a cartoon "studio" in "your" basement with a couple friends. You really could reincarnate Space Ghost in a new format. 10-15 episodes, in 20 minute story lines. Just use some stop-animation software and a good replica paper cut-out of Space Ghost. Plug in a good voice over (or sound editing software) - and you're almost set. All you need are 10 really good stories.

There were two episodes that were only aired once to the best of my knowledge. The first was the full version of Space Ghost slowly crawling after an ant to "kill its family" after it bit him. Episodes were normally 15 minutes long with 2 to a half-hour segment. Space Ghost started following the ant near the end of the first episode and for the entire duration of the second was just slowly moving across alien vistas on his knees. Eventually he reached a pair of giant metal doors which sprung open revealing massive roaring mantis warriors and Space Ghost runs off yelling insults. Subsequent airings cut the VAST majority of the chase so it could fit in a single 15 minute stretch. The second was a Cartoon Planet episode that was the last episode of a New Years marathon. It was ENTIRELY made of Space Ghost asking Brak about their viewership numbers ("How we do'n Brack?") and Brak responding the same way almost every time while standing in front of a generic line graph that went zigzagging up ("We're doing good!"). On rare iterations something would change with the biggest change was when the graph was upside down ("We're doing baaad!"). Never saw that episode again as a rerun. (note, I was very very tied when I watched this, reality turns out to be different. Episode's name is Ratingspalooza)

I frikkin loved this show back in the day, i taped as many episodes as i could and any clips i could find were some of the first things i downloaded when sites like Napster, Limewire, Kazaa, etc first appeared 😎 My absolute favorite SGC2C moment was not actually an episode, but a parody TV spot that i only saw once, and have never been able to find since (☹️) but i will never forget it as it caught me so off-guard that i almost had an aneurysm laughing 😂 In 1997 the hard sci-fi movie Contact came out, and a key moment in the film was when a mysterious audio signal is received from space. This “whoomp-whoomp-whoomp” sound also featured heavily in the commercials, which i had seen many times before seeing the movie. Well, one day, while presumably watching Cartoon Network, one such commercial came on, with Jodie Foster and company desperately trying to figure out where the signal is coming from... but in this **particular** tv spot, the answer was revealed: jump cut to Moltar in his control room repeatedly pulling the handle on his control panel, which in turn is causing the repeated “whoomp” noise, and the whole time he’s just laughing maniacally. And i just about died 😂🤣😂🤣 After seeing those commercials so many times, to be totally blindsided by this out-of-nowhere spoof was one of the most hilarious things i have ever witnessed. I really, really hope to find it online someday 🙂

Space Ghost Coast to Coast copied the same premise as The Max Headroom Talking Head Show, only the role of host and guest where inverted. Instead of Max stuck in the screen, the guests are stuck in the screen.

Why does zorak's vest change color? 🤣

Because they used footage from the 1960s show. Pretty much all of Zorak's henchmen from the show looked identical to him aside from the different-colored vests, so they just recycled footage of any of the mantis characters for Zorak.
