@@ExSpoonman actually the B-52 is more cost effective than some of our more advanced modern weapons like drone strikes. The B-52 was built way back in the 1950s and is basically the militaries way of doing bombing on the cheap when stealth is not necessary. It also adds a psychological warfare aspect because it’s loud as Hell and terrifying to enemy forces. They also used B-52s in Operation Paul Bunyan as a show of force against the North Koreans for murdering a U.S. officer cutting down a tree. “In addition, a 64-man task force of the ROK Army 1st Special Forces Brigade accompanied them, armed with clubs and trained in taekwondo, supposedly without firearms. However, once they parked their trucks near the Bridge of No Return, they started throwing out the sandbags that lined the truck bottoms and handing out M16 rifles and M79 grenade launchers that had been concealed below them. Several of the commandos also had M18 Claymore mines strapped to their chests with the firing mechanism in their hands, and were shouting at the North Koreans to cross the bridge. A US infantry company in 20 utility helicopters and seven Cobra attack helicopters circled behind them. Behind these helicopters, B-52 Stratofortresses came from Guam escorted by US F-4 Phantom IIs from Kunsan Air Base and South Korean F-5 and F-86 fighters were visible flying across the sky at high altitude. F-4Es from Osan AB and Taegu Air Base, South Korea, F-111 bombers of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing out of Mountain Home Air Force Base, were stationed, and F-4C and F-4D Phantoms from the 18th TFW Kadena Air Base and Clark Air Base were also deployed. The aircraft carrier USS Midway task force had also been moved to a station just offshore.”

They had two retire two M-777's due to regulations and manufacture specifications for safety. In five months they fired 35,000 artillery rounds on ISIS targets. To put the numbers in context: During all of Operation Desert Storm, both the Marines and the Army fired a little more than 60,000 artillery rounds. In the invasion of Iraq, just over 34,000 rounds were fired. I will not say how many rounds were laid down range that evening, but it was less than 1% of what that gun is capable in it's life span. When this was mentioned on the news here in the States. It was billed as soldiers from Wagoner Group attacked a small group of Special Forces in Syria. Wagoner Group was devasted and the small contingent of Special Forces had one minor injury. It took a long time for the nature of this engagement to come out. There has been rumors that Wagoner Group was on orders from Moscow, to take the oil field. That would explain why the Russian Regulars didn't know what was happening. Kinda why the war in Ukraine is going so badly...Being managed by Generals in Moscow. Hell of a way to conduct a war!!!

Then Secretary of Defense General Mattis (who I had the distinct honor of serving under) was later asked about the incident: "The Russian high command in Syria assured us it was not their people, and my direction to the chairman was for the force, then, to be annihilated," Mattis said. "And it was." Mattis is absolutely beloved by the Marine Corps and his quotes are absolutely famous. "I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, I’ll kill you all." and of course what he told us "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet" and "The most important 6 inches on the battlefield is between your ears."

As an M60 gunner in the Marines I can say that when the gloves come off and we can kill basically everything "Over that way" no one has a fucking chance. With 155mm artillery on call using the Excaliber rounds, we can start taking you out when you are in a different area code. Throw in Apache or even Cobra helicopters and there is not a vehicle on Earth that you can either fight in, hide in, or run away in. They didn't even use A10s in this case, but it wasn't even needed, nor were the F22s which are the successors to the F15s. The F15s were already assisting there and with a 106/0 perfect record in dog fights it was wise to keep all of the Russian aircraft out of the kill zone. Keep in mind that I didn't even talk about the 81mm mortars, Javelin missiles, or any variation of the M1 tanks. Hell, they didn't even need boots on the ground to mop up anyone left over. Yeah, don't make the US take off its gloves.

The one thing the US military, specifically SOCOM/JSOC, is absolutely a master of is Combined Arms and co-ordination of multiple systems and assets. We used to practice LFX using Combined Arms by way of C&C aka C-squared in the 18th ABN Corps. We'd combine 155, 105, Apache, Kiowas, US Navy CAS (F/A-18 & F-14), USAF CAS (AC-130, A-10), and a single AWAC/S with some CCT & FIST units. We'd do a heavy drop with approx. 800-1000 paratroopers, 15-20 18 series folks, and occasionally Delta and SEALs would play with us. Often we'd see the bleachers in the landing zone area (off on the side) full of dudes in suits and foreign military officers from some podunk nation. We always figured it was just some country that was itching the crotch of the US and instead of wiping them off the map, we'd show them what was about to make them crawl into the outhouse and hide after we flatten everything for 100 miles. Back in the early 90s we were just flirting with large scale C2 and Combined Arms Warfare. We were constantly learning how to better operate with our sister units and branches, how to improve comms, improve target sharing, utilize topos to plan large-scale artillery attacks onto areas that enemy artillery might be at. It's amazing how MLRS and 155s can absolutely demolish an entire grid square which is 1kmx1km. It was an interesting time to be in the 82nd and later Corps HQ. I am amazed by how many special operations troops have been stood up. Back in that time, it was rare to see more than 3-6 make it through selection for SF let alone Delta. You'd have to be an absolute beast to walk into Delta selection off the street just due to land nav. It was a good review of that video, and I am surprised that any of that information got out of Syria.

It's not that we have the largest or most power military in the world, it's our militaries logistics that are next level and are battle hardened. Our military also trains more than any other. I was in for over 11 years and all I did was fight and train, when we werent fighting it was always training or qualifications.

Don't feel bad for laughing. As a US Army vet, I understand, and as I truly hate the loss of life, and saddened by it. However, we have a saying. F around, and find out. Whether a soldier, or merc, YOU know what your getting yourself into, and need to follow through with your personal choice/responsibility and accept it. Please let me know how I can contact you (or me, as I know the net is full of crazies these days). When you do decide to make you trip to my country, I'd be more than willing to give you a helping hand, and would love to meet you! I worked with South Africans while working in the UAE and some fellows while in Afghanistan. Would love to swap stories, and treat you to some American Braai! I'll show you some of our southern dishes (smoked meat, fried chicken, etc) if you can share your recipes from SA! I live out in the country in North Florida, but when we used to camp in the Everglades of south Florida, we had a SA market I'd get fresh Boerewors, and make Per-Peri wings.

USAF rolled out a lot but they could have done the whole thing with a few Warthogs. You want to know what's really terrifying? I live next to a missile range here in the US where they actually do weapon testing. There is nothing more terrifying than hearing them use a smart bomb at night. I say hear because you're not going to see it at all. More often than not they drop such ordinance from massive heights while it's ether GPS guided to location or by a laser spotter. All you hear is the thing quickly come screaming in before the explosion. If you're not in range of the thing actually going off, you'll feel it in your feet if you're anywhere close to the area.

The AH-64D Apache is a great attack chopper but so is the Vipers. But two different choppers for two different primary missions with a lot of overlapping missions. Dead is dead from both!

Three of the seven ships I served on had the Phalanx/CIWS/R2D2 and those guns fired 4500 rounds a minute. Other than the decibels being too low the reader has the sound correct. One firefight I was in we were down to five (5) minutes of ammunition for my 5 inch gun mount. As Sheriff Grady Judd put it, “If someone points a gun at my deputies, they will shoot back…a lot.” I timed my gun crew as firing 24 shots in one minute through one of our two barrels. There is a joke that during the fighting in North Africa during WWII, if you didn’t know who was in front of you, fire a single rife shot. If the response was massed aimed rifle fire , it was British soldiers. If the response was multiple machine gun firing, it was German soldiers. If nothing happened for 3-5 minutes and then the entire world dropped on you, they were American.
