Sony a7S III - This Was Lit With Candles (AND Lupo Actionpanel Full Color)

Фильм және анимация

What even is 2020? Here's a scene we shot on the Sony a7S III (BIG thanks to Sony Australia) Shot at iso 16,000, IN ISOLATION.
There have been some further restrictions where we live so we are even more restricted with leaving the house.
Now... I have some thoughts about the Sony a7S iii both good and not as good. There is never a perfect camera. Stay tuned for another video or two coming up soon!

Great way to show the low light capabilities of the A7SIII, and loved the explanation of the shot setup and how you found the ideal light colour. Really interesting about ISO 16000 too, looks pretty clean considering!

Probably the best a7s3 test. Glad Sony send you one !

Very nice footage, thank you. For the scene, I'd personally use a green-blue color correction filter to avoid the yellowness of the tungsten-like colors that come from the candles burning.

Great work on putting this together, Felicia and I'm glad the camera went into some capable hands! I used to have the A7s Mark I and I loved the full frame look. But ultimately technology surpassed it and better options hit the market. What I'm really excited about with the Mark III is the high ISO's for high speed work. The camera obviously does 4K 120fps (or 100p for us PAL people), and being able to maintain a 180 degree shutter without needing copious amounts of lighting is real exciting. Looking forward to more of your videos soon :)

Really nice video Felicia, it´s great to see how capable it is in low light! Would love to see a comparison with the BMPCC 6k :).

Hard to beat the Blackmagic for color and cinematic look, but the Sony has its use cases.

@PRIVATE yes that's what i said. i have all kinds of cameras and owed nearly all brands under the sun. I even have ccd raw cameras that render colors better than even an arri (in my humble opinion). But in terms of creating a cinematic image my preference is not the Japanese colors you see on sony, panasonic, canon etc (though i have owned all). They have their use cases though. For example, lav diaz's movie, season of the devil, which won the golden bear, was shot on an a7sii (black and white though - I doubt he would shoot it in color) because there were so many low light scenes. However, Lav usually shoots with a Red in his movies.

Hi Felicia, this was a great video! Found your channel a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying the informative content as someone working to become a DP. I would love to hear your thoughts on building a lighting kit in 2020. It seems the market is absolutely saturated with so many good LEDs units, and once you factor in SSI, panel vs single point source vs tubes, it gets quite confusing!

Sony - you've upped your cool factor in my eyes for reaching out to work with Felicia! But... it's weird (not good) that owners/users are left speculating about this issue that the image clears up at 16,000 ISO. Sony should have information available at (before?) launch explaining what's going on. You got a fantastic look with the candles. I particularly liked the look of the over the shoulder shot of the open book - not sure why, but it stood out as really pleasing. I'm not a fan of the look that comes out of most Sony cameras, so I'm interested to see more of what you do with this camera and its new color style/look.

Thank you! I had a very limited time with it and during the time I had it restrictions on lockdown got tighter which meant I couldn't take it out and do all the fun things I wanted to do. But we got a couple of little tests in!

It's probably too late but it would have been nice to see what a different camera handled the lighting. Not the full shoot but just enough to compare and contrast.

Ahhh that would have been a good idea! It's a bit late unfortunately. We did shoot this scene for a short film we were making though. The short film is unfinished and we started it a month or two back. Initially the scene was shot on the BMPCC and was lit a little differently. Might be able to fish out the footage and compare what we did with the BM compared to Sony 🤔

Ah! Must have missed mentioning that in the video. My bad. I wanted to test standard, no profile, straight from camera. I did give it a little bit of a push in post just messing with the levels a bit and pulling back some saturation but otherwise it's not using a PP. Wish I had more time with the camera to test slog and have a proper play but unfortunately that wasn't possible this time around. Aiming to try get my hands on it at some point in the future to get some more thorough tests and play. 👍
