Sony a7S III - My Thoughts as a DP

Фильм және анимация

All things considered, the Sony a7S III is an amazing little camera. The auto focus tests I did really blew me away, especially considering we tested it using low contrast, low light AND on a 135mm at f1.8. Yeah it didn't nail it ALL the time, but it did a bloody good job for throwing it in the deep end.

    EDIT: I've had a number of comments recently about the comments I made on shape and size. Just going to clear a few things up for those who were confused by those comments. I am aware it's a hybrid camera. I am also aware the camera is not for me, even said so at the end of the video. But I'm not looking for a new camera. I've also never been a fan of the hybrid look as you could probably gather from the video. That's my thoughts that I shared from my point of view as a professional DP (as stated in the title) and that's not to say pros don't use this camera. They certainly do and it has its place but yeah, as I said... Just my thoughts and you don't have to agree with them. ☺️ I brought up my thoughts on the shape and size to hopefully help those who are thinking of getting a new camera, are new to it, or may forget that they might have to spend more money on accessories to kit it out for production and that could be time consuming and/or expensive and difficult. Hope that clears that up 🙂 Thanks so much for watching, everyone! Hopefully back to more film industry content soon. With everything shut down right now it's hard to do the videos I want to do. So the videos for the foreseeable future will be more personal videos, perspectives, and maybe some creative stuff depending on complexity in a lockdown.

    I've watched a lot of A7SIII breakdowns (too many). This was so great and something very different. Well done :) I can totally agree with some of the points (especially the camera body being more of a rig/cube). Can't wait to check out more and test out my A7SIII when it arrives. Cheers!

    This video and you talking about the "right tool for the job" really made me feel much better about purchasing the A7III last year! I shoot video but I also do some photo work (my understanding is the A7SIII is not ideal for high resolution photography). So with the money I can afford to spend, I feel like I got an all-around more capable camera for my needs, without having to break the bank.

    Nailed it with paint on needing a different form factor for the A7siii would have been nice if they made it like a mini FS5 shape but like you said would it still be a mirrorless camera / A7 if we changed the shape 🤔

    I get the ergnomics. I too would like the camera to be more modular with ports out the back. Like RED, Zcam, Kinefinity etc. But I get Sony. A modular block would make it not suited for the vlog/youtube/travel-rungun crowd. The nice thing about this is that you can strip it down into handheld and travel with it on your own, you can put it on a gimbal or you can rig it out to make your indie short film. Plus Sony could make something like an FX6 (FS5 FF successor)

    It’s not a film camera. Get an fx9 if you want that. It’s a video focused hybrid mirrorless. Not sure why there is confusion. Not every video focused camera needs a film body, as there are countless other use cases for video that isn’t film. This fits that bill.

    Most of you don't eve know A7sii was used as second camera in popular Tv series Cobra kai. Most of the action and fight scenes were shot on a7sii dp and colorist did great job matching it to f55 nobody even noticed anything. So stop pixel piping as7iii is killer camera. Having AF is life changing, I have used vintage manual lenses for decades and having good AF lets me be more creative. I use a7III but can imagine how god a7siii is.

    Once things start kicking off again properly I can start assessing what to do. I like the renting options and I have a good deal for rentals. • @avdcam

    Felicia Smith I’m in the same boat here in Canada, lot of good rental options but generally clients in the doc/corporate type space tend to want to move very quickly or can be rife with schedule changes. Owning something around the 10K price point will likely meet all of their needs and more vs rental houses carrying mostly 30K plus camera kits and catering less to the mid tier camera packages. I feel like the FX9 and C300 MIII might be duking it out at that level for the next couple of years.

    Did we talk about overheating? Probably not that big of a deal for shooting cinema or as a b-cam, but definitely not ideal in a video camera. I think it goes back to what you said about designing the body so it works more for video, but then...is it really an A7siii at that point? Haha

  • @flickcine

    @flickcine

    3 жыл бұрын

    I never experienced overheating but then again I didn't test it on a constant roll, it's also winter here so that's a factor. However, all the other videos I've seen on it, there doesn't seem to be many people that have run into overheating issues. The most "continuous" filming I did was the bee footage at 120fps. It never even came up with any sort of warning and I am pretty sure there was a moment there I accidentally let it roll on for five minutes. I mean, that's no test but yeah. It's certainly nothing like what's happening with the R5.

    The Sony A6000 series have a better form factor - don't understand why they need to emulate DSLR "penta prism" design.

  • @jamesandcamera

    @jamesandcamera

    3 жыл бұрын

    I can think of several reasons. Key one being better sales and marketing, the SLR form factor is seen as a "professional workhorse". Whereas the A6x's rangefinder shape is not really seen as a "pro" form factor purely based of peoples unconscious biases of what they have seen in the past. Its like how people rig out their small video cameras to make them bigger, because the client perceives a bigger camera as more "pro". All of its just perception and doesnt really matter to the user. But the user buys based off what the client expects as well as their needs.

  • @wkmpellucid

    @wkmpellucid

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@jamesandcamera Yeah, some how I managed several decades as a photojournalist, using the form factor (Leica Ms) and never felt my cameras weren't "pro". I think Felicia makes some good points about the design. It does seem as though the technology Sony is putting into cameras like A7S III will likely only improve over time and I wonder how much longer you will need one of those "big cameras" to do the job.

  • @jamesandcamera

    @jamesandcamera

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@wkmpellucid yeah its not really about how capable a camera is sometimes. Sometimes it comes purely down to client expectation of what they think is a "pro" camera. Lots of media roles can get away with small cameras these days. But speaking from experience there will always be things big cameras can do that small cameras cannot. Purely based off physics and size.
