Sony a5100 Video Features Review

"Which camera should I buy?” I get that question from time to time. Usually it is from someone wanting to get started shooting video. So in this episode, let’s look at one pretty good option for the aspiring video and film maker: The Sony a5100.
This is one of the more affordable options in large sensor, interchangeable lens camera systems. And Sony has done a great job in terms of balancing features, price, and quality.
Visit us at learnlightandsound.com for more updates on how to improve your lighting and sound for video.

    +Army Barbie Yes, there are several but I use the 50mm f/1.8 lens. Any of the lenses with an aperture of f/2.8 and lower can do this but they are generally quite a bit more expensive than the included 16-50mm lens. Here's the 50mm lens (warning, it is not a zoom lens - you have to move the camera closer or farther away to get the video set up): amzn.to/1Jllvp2 Best wishes!

    Hey Curtis, really appreciate your videos. I'm constantly battling audio and so I've been watching your videos the last few days and trying to come up with solutions. Anyway, I use this camera for my video reviews. Wondering if there's a lense you could recommend. I use the kit lens and don't zoom at all, so I'm figuring if I get a prime lense I would need something in the 16-20 range. I do zoom a bit in my up close product shots so I may continue to use the kit lens for that.

    +Suck My Mod Hey Matt, thanks! The only other lens I have for the 5100 (and I have since bought the a6000) is the Sony 50mm f/1.8 which I really like. Sony makes a 16mm f/2.8 "pancake" lens which reviews decently. It's definitely on the small side which is nice and the reviews say it works pretty well for video. Priced at about $250 US, I'm hoping to check it out myself pretty soon: amzn.to/1NYfddt Keep up the good work on your channel!

    +Curtis Judd cool, thanks man! Yeah not super sure if I want to invest more into the e mount ecosystem or buy a different camera. Been wanting the gh4 for quite a while. Anyway, thanks for the tip. On audio I've been using the h1 with the onboard mic but I just bought the avuture that you recommend. My first lav mic so didn't wanna spend a ton right out of the gate. I used usb mics for a long time but I got away from those. I'm yet to find a solution that I'm happy with. I have an annoyingly unique voice lol.

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    9 жыл бұрын

    Abu Khadijah Yes! My advice is do not get this camera for that type of shooting. The Sony alpha cameras have a tendency to shut off after about 20 minutes to prevent the camera from overheating. If you're shooting long-form video, I'd recommend you go with a Canon, Sony, or Panasonic camcorder. Unfortunately, I don't use camcorders myself so I cannot recommend a specific model but camcorders have much smaller sensors and do not typically have the shutdown to prevent overheating issues.

    Vicente Luna That's what I use it for. It is more a question of whether you'll be doing clips that are less than 20 minutes per. As long as you do that, its fine. If you need something to run uninterrupted for an hour, you probably want to look at a camcorder.

Its such a great camera and easy to hand off to family during a gathering ...people get very intimidated when you hand them a dslr...I seen the dp review image comparisons and surprisingly it shoots high iso better than the a6000 and other cameras that cost 3x....its amusing that the rx100m2 is $300 more and isn't that much smaller....This camera, as of now is the best bang for the buck.. • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    9 жыл бұрын

    Must confess I have only played with the RX100 III for a few seconds so I don't have a great sense for how well that camera works for video. If I were buying, I'd go for something with interchangeable lenses but that's a matter of personal preference and the types of shooting you'll do. If you're planning on shooting video long term, something with interchangeable lenses is probably a better route because then you invest in lenses which you can usually carry forward to new camera bodies.

    Thanks for the review! Can you compare the a5100 to the other cameras like panasonic gh line and other sony E mount cameras in terms of sharpness and details in footage?

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    9 жыл бұрын

    shot The Panasonic GH4 is sharper but that's largely because it captures 4K vs. the a5100's HD. If sharpness is at the top of your list of priorities, the GH4 is very good, even if you down convert to HD. Some are saying that the Samsung NX1 is even sharper still. But of course there are a lot of other factors in evaluating cameras. The most obvious example is that the a5100 is about 1/3 the price of the GH4 and that's without a lens on the GH4. So it sort of isn't a fair comparison. I haven't used any of the other Sony E mount cameras yet, but looking forward to an updated a6000 or perhaps an a7000 (whichever Sony releases next).

    Thanks Curtis! Your video is amazing! Two questions I got for you: 1. How quite is the autofocus motor of the kit lens? Is it as quite as STM lens? It's a big downside with nikon/canon kit lens for shooting videos. 2. Would you recommend using continuous focus while shooting video with the camera? This is another downside with entry level dslrs (: Thanks!!!

  • @curtisjudd

    Hi Oran, It is much quieter than many DSLR standard lenses (I haven't used STM lenses so I can speak to that in detail). However, I use manual focus when shooting video to avoid the focus hunting effect that usually comes along with auto focus. I hope that helps!

    Thanks for the review. What type of memory card does it require. And how long can you record. Is there any time limit?

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    9 жыл бұрын

    It does have a 29:59 limit to recording video. Some have said that it often shuts off recording before that because it gets too hot. I have had it stop recording after about 21 minutes one time but haven't tested it extensively as most of my shoots are shorter clips than that (typically 5 to 10 minutes). As for memory cards, I use an SDXC UHS-I 64GB Sony branded SD card and have not had any issues. This is from the manual: When recording movies, the following memory cards are recommended: (Mark2) (Memory Stick PRO Duo media (Mark2)) (Memory Stick XC-HG Duo media (Mark2)) (Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo media) Class 4 SD card or faster When recording XAVC S format movies, use the following memory cards: SDXC memory card with a capacity of at least 64 GB (Class 10 or faster) UHS-I compatible SDXC memory card with a capacity of at least 64 GB Memory Stick XC-HG Duo media This product supports UHS-I-compatible SD cards.

    Excellent review, I've just sold my Nikon d5100 and am looking to buy a small run n gun type camera for photo and video this seems like it could be a nice option. although it probably won't match up as a 3rd camera with my ac130 and tm700 camcorders which I'm using for video work at the moment..... hopefully I'll be selling both of these soon and moving on to something a little more cinematic.... Hi Curtis! Thank you for this review, it’s great! Question - I want to shoot YT style/talking head videos, but will the main lens blur the background when I shoot or do I need a different lens that would allow me to shoot video w lower than a 3.8 aperture?

    Hi! Great review, thank you! 👍 I'm looking for a camera around that price range for making a dance video clips, I also liked the idea I can use it for selfie, it's compact (as I will travel) and its seems like a good camera for beginners. Would you recommend it over the Sony a6000 or got another idea? 😊 Thanks again and have a great weekend! Dan

    +Dan Nitsan The a5100 is a great little camera. The only thing I wish it had was an electronic viewfinder because it is really difficult to see the screen when outdoors in the sun. The a6000 has a viewfinder but does not have the selfie flip-up screen. So it is a tradeoff that you'll have to consider - which is more important to you and the types of shooting you'll be doing. I hope that helps and best wishes!

    You can assign custom buttons, so for example, you can assign white balance to the "?" button. I've bought one as a 'b' cam to my A7s and it works quite well: it's nowhere near as sharp as the A7s, but the faster rolling shutter combined with the reduced sharpness means that it works much better on a glidecam than the A7s (the strobing rolling edges on A7s footage drives me nuts). So far, I'm liking the portrait style with -2,-1,-3 and DRO switched off (I found blacks to be too noisy with this on).

But not to worry, you can control both of those issues: Exposure (to keep the brightness consistent): kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGWmpruEpNHXm7g.html Focus (to prevent the camera from focusing on your hand instead of face): kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYiY0pp8ZsvTdJs.html Good luck!

    Akmal Salikhov I have not noticed any image quality differences with the internal XAVC S vs ProRes on the Atomos. The main reason I like to use the Atomos, at least in some cases, is that ProRes is much smoother for editing in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, and Final Cut, at least on Mac OS X.

    dan Mihaita Thanks Dan. You can increase the ISO on this camera comfortably. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot up to 1600 ISO and even higher if I'm willing to do some denoising in post. 24p vs 60p is partly an aesthetic choice. The "look" of 24p is probably closer to the motion blur we're used to seeing in cinema whereas 60p will look much more crisp like a sports broadcast. But with 60p, you will need to use a faster shutter speed in the range of 1/125th of a second which will let in less light which will require a higher ISO.

    Hi Curtis, Great video as usual. I have a sony A6000 that i video weddings with. I'm waiting for the A6xxx / A7000 or the A7ll but need another camera for b-roll. A6000 is now $398 and the A5100 is $348 ($281 used) so there isn't a huge price difference. . I was thinking about the 5100 over another 6000 because of the touch focus for focus racking. +63MacGuy Hi! I just bought an a6000. I don't think the touchscreen (which is pretty limited) outweighs the benefits of the viewfinder and physical controls on the a6000. I'd go with a second a6000 for wedding shoots. The a5100 is good for Vlogging but the lack of viewfinder and fiddly controls which require a lot of menu diving would make working fast like you generally have to for a wedding a little tricky. That's my subjective opinion. :) Best wishes!

    +Roberto Maria Between the a5100 and a6000, I would go with the a6000 at this point. The price difference is not very big and the viewfinder on the a6000 is a very useful feature. I don't have personal experience with the G7 or GX7 though I do like my Panasonic GH4. I think the Panasonics are very good for shooting video overall. Their only weakness is that they are not great at high ISO settings (low light). That's where the Sonys do much better because they have bigger sensors.

    This was so useful and informative. But I'm still tied between the 5100 and 6000. I record makeup tutorials, so I love the "selfie" flip screen feature! My Nikon 3100 which I have now does not AF, and it drives me insane and I can't see myself. But I also use a ring light which attaches to the little slide clip thing at the top of the 6000, sorry I don't know what it's called lol. Also, I don't use a mic right now but it does bother me that I'd have to upgrade in the future if I wanted to do so. I'm so confused. I mean I guess since it has AF I don't have to worry about seeing myself, what do you think?

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    For my videos where I'm doing talking head (head and shoulders like on a makeup/hair tutorial), I actually turn off the auto focus feature because it ends up hunting around too much, especially when I move my hands up into the shot - it gets confused, even on the a6000. Instead, I switch to manual focus and use this technique instead: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYiY0pp8ZsvTdJs.html Then maybe the a5100 would be good for you because you could use the selfie screen.

    Hi Curtis, love your reviews. As a young filmmaker leaning towards documentary style shooting, would you recommend this as a first camera? Also, I have relatives heavily invested in Nikon lenses who would be willing to let me borrow them, would you recommend shooting with a Metabones adapter? What are the downsides? Thanks again!

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi David. I think it depends on how you like to shoot. Some documentary filmmakers prefer camcorder style cameras because they are easier to operate and require less fuss to focus. They also don't have the limitations that many DLSR and ILC cameras have in terms of recording limits (Nikon, Canon, and Sony all impose a 30 minute limit). However, others prefer larger sensor cameras like DSLRs because they usually allow a shallow depth-of-field look but are more work to rig up and keep in focus. For interviews I really like larger sensor cameras because of the look and in an interview, they're typically up on a tripod and the interviewee isn't moving around too much so the camera operation is totally manageable when working solo. If you want to go the large sensor route for your first camera, I'm really happy with this a5100 because it evidently does full-sensor readout and produces a nice, clean image. You could use a Metabones adapter or speedbooster to put those Nikon lenses to use. I have the micro 4/3 speedbooster for my Panasonic GH4 and it works very nicely. It isn't perfectly sharp, but I don't always like to have that clinically clean look. And when I want that look, there are other lenses I use. You could also look at the Nikon DSLRs. I'm not as enthused about those for shooting video because they record at relatively low bitrates, unless you also invest in an external recorder. All this to say, it really depends on your budget and the look you want and how much work you're willing to put into operating the camera vs. directing. I hope that helps!

  • @DavidViramontes

    @DavidViramontes

    Great review Curtis. I had preordered this then cancelled when it first came out. I bought the A6000 and havent looked back. And looking at one of the comments below I am glad that I didnt bother. Yes, 50 is better than the 24mb for the AVCHD on the A6000, but even that is sufficient. And it's not as if it is a better codec, like prores, or recording at 100mb, so...that's fine. I can sleep at night :) I like the EVF and that was the deal breaker with me. Awesome little camera though. (the 5100 I mean)

    Thanks Dave. Yes, a viewfinder will be critical for me as well (not so much for my wife). Can't wait to see what Sony has in store over the next year...

    One thing that gets overlooked a lot comparing the a6000 vs a5100 is that the a5100 actually reads the whole sensor and doesn't do line skipping. Full sensor readout + xvacs is significantly better for video. I have 0 moire in my videos on the a5100 where the a6000 showed some.

    you're right Jarek. I didnt realize that. I use my A6000 a lot for photos and partly for video, but that's good to know

    ***** I've been looking for confirmation that the A5100 doesn't do pixel binning but can't find it anywhere in Sony's specs, where did you find out ? Thanks.

    Great review! Has this camera a hot shoe mount somewhere?

    No, unfortunately, no hotshoe.

    The A6000 got a firmware upgrade to the XAVCS but didn't get the other video features the A5100 has and there's the fact the memory card for the A5100 side loads rather than buddying up with the battery at the bottom. So I would say the A5100 is still the better video option. Both lack headphone and mic jacks but the A6000 does have the option for some (expensive) add ons to it's multi-interface shoe.

    What would be the best video settings (24, etc.?) be? I heard going up to 64 is a little too much!

    Nice video review.. Thanks. Are you noticing that it overheats in video recording mode?

    +lovingatlanta it definitely does shut down to prevent overheating. I can usually get about 20-25 minutes depending on the ambient temperature.

    +Curtis Judd thank you for letting me know. I bought this camera in January 2016 because it was on sale. I bought it for the video mode more than the camera/photography mode. I didn't start using it until a month or two ago and I'm very disappointed with the overheating. So now working on a refund. I love your channel. 👍

    +lovingatlanta thanks! Sorry for the trouble with that. 😕 For long form video I like the Panasonic cameras which do better with long clips.

    Hi, i'm looking for a camera to record short footages for tech reviews and it looks like the Sony a5100 is a good budget option for me, but i'm confused with those lenses. Can i use a5100 without any lens (just body)? If so - will it affect the quality of my videos? I have a feeling that this question is at least stupid but i'm totally green with cameras... :)

    You need a lens. The first Amazon link includes the lens.
