Sony A5100 :: The Best Deal In Photography?

Ғылым және технология

The Sony A5100 is perhaps one of the best deals in cameras right now in terms of bang for the buck. Its not the perfect camera, but what you get in terms of image quality for both still photos and videos is what makes it incredible. Especially at this price point.

You have to mention the ISO sensitivity: while NEX-5 shoots at a maximum of 1600 ISO in non-manual modes, A5100 shoots at a maximum ISO of 6400 (with the same level of noise). That means a full 2 stops, meaning that with the same f/3.5 lens the camera shoots with an exposure that is 4 times faster, producing much sharper images especially in low light situations (indoors, in the evening etc).

Just a quick FYI- 8 Years after you made this video, and I am STILL using my NEX-5 "Into the ground" as you say. A friend of mine got a used A5100 camera, and has asked me for some help getting her going on it. I had no idea when I started watching this video that you would compare this camera to the NEX-5, which I still use an average of a few times a week. It is going fine. I had to open up the battery charger and give it a kick in the pants (tweak a pot in there), and I have to "Clean" the contacts on the lens a bit by simply hold the release button and rotating the lens a few times back and forth- but that is easy to do, and always takes care of any minor connection issues between the lens and the body. The NEX-5 has well over 1,200 hours of use on it, and has still never been to the repair shop. 🙂

hi. does the screen on the 5100 have a different coating as it's now touchscreen? I've noticed some Sony cameras (such as my Nex 5 or RX100) are prone to 'flaking' and are easy to mark. I put a screen protector on my NEX5 to stop this happening but in your experience is the screen good enough to not need a screen protector? Is it different to your nex 5 or a6000? thanks

I am currently shooting most of my videos on a SONY RX100 m2 which is nice but the footage doesn't hold up well to grading and the lack of a flip up screen is annoying. Is the 5100 worth the upgrade? I also have a panasonic G7 for "bigger" work but the autofocus on it isn't great for vlogging and it turns out that 4k isn't all that fun to edit on the fly. Tl;dr a5100 vs Pana G7 or Sony RX100mii My thought was to get the 5100 to replace the RX100m2 and keep the Panasonic.

I have been using it for a few weeks. I got mine on sale with an second lenses. Picture is nice, it good to be able to charge using a micro USB cable, touch to focus is nice. It's actually quite easy to use for an amateur like me. NFC is convenient, Wifi transfer is good after your download PlayMemories. Recording video is great, the continuous auto focus works great. The downsides for me, is that it won't charge and record at the same time but the deal I got with my camera, came with a second battery. Another thing, it said that I would be able to record at least 20 minutes at 40 C, but I manage until 15 minutes of recording time at 32 C, the temperature warning came up at 8 minutes. It is not a deal breaker for me, since the videos I record is less than 10 minutes but it is something people should reconsider when shooting video. The camera got warm after a few hours of continuous photos but it never shuts down.

Jay Newton I've only used the Sony app to use remote shutter. It's an included app, you can remotely operate the camera using a hotspot the camera makes. Works well on Android phones, people say it's bad on iOS. Using the app, you can look through the camera, zoom, set some settings, and take a shot. The shot immediately gets transferred to your phone. Remote shutters should be available in the market, but I haven't used those.

I have a cannon t3 that i use for most of my projects that is getting outdated for what i want to use it for. I am looking for a simpler camera with similar quality and slimmer for recreational use before upgrading my dslr (if that makes sense). Something for going to amusement parks, concerts, vacations, and video blogging. My ideal price point is around $500 but can flex. My main issue with my dslr that keeps me from taking it on personal uses is its size, the screen doesn't flip so i can't see if things are in frame as well when personally recording or trying to get a decent picture of myself.(because i don't have photography friend that live near me. Any advice or recommendations?

Hello, great review! Since you have some experience with the Nex series, I was wondering whether you knew if there was a noticeable increase in image quality with the a5100 when compared to the Nex-5t (different sensor than 5n)? Also, I've heard that there may be a little added noise, in low light, with the a5100 than the 5t (don't know if this is true though). I am currently split between these two, and am trying to figure out if the a5100 is worth the extra cash, purely based on image quality (both in daylight/night conditions). What's your take on this? Thanks in advance!

how is the overall experience of photographing on this one, compared to the DSLRs? I've used a sony alpha range camera and canon 600D. Based on limited use of both, I would prefer the 600D over the alpha, since I find the electronic viewfinder on the alpha pretty unreliable and fake, especially at night and in dim light and it just doesnt help to capture parts of any scene that seem interesting to the naked eye (the electronic display kinda diverts attention) this is a different camera though and I wonder how the viewfinder is on this

I love my A5100. This is a decent video going over some of the cool options on this camera. You are incorrect about the zoom on the built-in lens though when you said you have to use that little lever to zoom in and out. If you have the focus set for any of the automatic modes, you can use the ring to zoom in and out. I ONLY have three complaints about this camera: First complaint is that the manual focus adjustment using the lens it comes with isn't so great. There's no way to adjust it via anything but the ring (and I confirmed this when I talked with Sony for a good hour or so), which acts differently depending on how fast you move the ring, it's like "acceleration mode" on a mouse but on steroids, so you can't count in any way on the focus adjustment being the same physical placement when you move around the ring in one direction and then the other direction, and there's no meter that tells you in any decent amount of detail what exactly the focus is adjusted to. This makes it very time consuming to adjust the focus manually--and when there's no focus assist, like when you're actually recording video where they disable focus assist, it's almost impossible to adjust the focus manually--but since it does have a number of decent auto-focus modes, that's not always an issue. Second complaint is that it splits up video files at around 2gb, and when it splits them up, it mutes the sound right during the transition between the files, so if I wanted to make a 20 minute video at 60p (I love high framerate, Cameron is planning on filming Avatar 2 in 60fps and I'm really excited about it) using AVCHD, it's split into two, and even when I put it into a video editor, there's always this point where you can tell that something has happened in the middle of the video. Third complaint is how quickly it gets too hot when filming video and it shuts down. I don't even know if it would let me film a 25 minute video if I wanted to. I haven't tried the XAVC S mode yet as I didn't initially get a card fast enough for it, but I may try it out in the near future (I'm about to order a new card from Amazon), it would probably solve my issues around when I use a video editor how the quality gets so degraded when I re-encode it. Anyway, great video. I learned a few more things about my camera from it. Thanks.

+Kizzume Fowler (Stinky) With the kit lens, there are 3 ways to zoom: power zoom lever on the zoom barrel, lens ring on the zoom barrel, and W/T lever around the shutter button. If you are using another lens (manual or AF), the lever will not work for optical zoom, but it will work for both levels of digital zoom, which is VERY handy. If anything, shooting video with clear image zoom is great quality wise, brings 2x the optical zoom. The lever will do a nice smooth slow zoom when shooting video (or faster zoom is pulled back more if i remember correctly). That lever is VERY good to have believe it or not... i wish it was on the a6000.

I bought 2 of these for short video interviews because of the xavc codec. The video looks great, but one thing I did not realize before buying is that it does over heat after 10-15 min of continuous recording. It seems to last a little better with a manual lens on it. Do you know of any workarounds for this problem?

Nathan Castellanos Yeah you can do that with an external power source. Google it. But i don't think you can override the 30mins limit. If you don't mind every 30mins to press rec again the camera will shoot as many 30mins clips as you want without any overheating.

Nathan Castellanos use an external recorder like an atomos ninja and it records continuously until the battery dies. It solved the overheating problem for me. It also solves the attaching an external mic problem too.

hi. can anyone help pls? how does my (a5100) work with a sony AL-EA2 adapter? I'm planning to buy the adapter for my lens. Can the adapter mess up the focal length or shutter speed? I heard it does with videos, but I'm not really concerned with that, I'm more concerned in taking photos with the adapter. i have a sony sam lens 35mm 1.8 A-mount.

Hello! Great review, i am still indecisive, I am trying to decide between the Canon G7x, or this one the Sony A5100. I want both good quality pictures and videos since I do want to start vlogging, which do you recommend?

  • @niallio77

Genesis Hernan Get this, BODY ONLY, then get the Sony 35mm f/1.8 to put on it. If you want to go cheaper, get the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 or for wider angle the Sigma 19mm, another good bang-for-the-buck lens. All these aps-c cameras are very similar now, but lens quality makes the difference so always prioritize the lens. As a rule of thumb, kit lens suck, and prime lens are the sharpest, hence buy the lens separately.
