Hands-On Review: Sony | A5100

Ғылым және технология

Shop at B&H: bit.ly/BHSonyA5100
Sony has rolled out a new changeable lens camera between their 2 higher end cameras the a5000 and the a6000. It's called the Alpha a5100 and it has more in common with the body of the a5000 but the performance specs are on par with, and in some cases exceed, the a6000.

    So would you say this is pretty similar to the Canon powershot g7x? I've been looking at this camera but your video on the Canon interested me. I like that they both have manual features as I like photography as a hobby but I also like having some fun making videos. Thanks for your input!

    The two cameras may have a few similar features, but they are not what I would call comparable. The Sony A5100 is an interchangeable lens type camera and also features a very large sized sensor for its body size and is larger by comparison to the sensor used in the Canon GX7 camera. The GX7 is more of an advanced point and shoot camera. Having the larger sensor and interchangeable lenses gives on a greater advantage to do more with the camera. - Yossi

    Hello, I am currently split between the a5100 and the Nex-5t. What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not the image quality is noticeably, or even significantly, better in the a5100. I've heard anything from a nearly nonexistent difference, to a dramatic difference. Would you be able to provide any insight on that? Also, correct me if I'm wrong here, but would the added detail picked up by the a5100's sensor not leave it a bit more prone to added noise in dim lighting (due to the smaller pixel size caused by a higher pixel-density), when compared the 5t? Thanks in advance!

    Good review! How is it in low light and how does ISO compare to say, the Canon T3i?

  • @BandH

    @BandH

    9 жыл бұрын

    It happens to hold up very well. It is one stop faster in its ISO range. The Canon Rebel T3i tops out at 12,800 and the A5100 goes up to 25,600. Further, the A5100 has a higher pixel count at 24mp (vs 18mp in the T3i) which will help it capture greater detail in the shadows and highlights at the higher apertures. - Yossi

    Gabrielle Ohler Really you couldn't go wrong with either model. Both are great entry-level/advanced cameras to use, and have a lot of features which are useful to learn with as you grow with the camera. If you're just looking more for a family camera you may appreciate the Sony more, it's more compact and you're likely to keep it packed and ready to go with you wherever you go. One advantage of the Canon is the optical viewfinder which is useful when shooting outside in brightly lit conditions, vs. just being able to work off the LCD on the Sony which, in sunlight can sometimes be a challenge to see. - Yossi

    I dont know much about cameras, and I will like to know if this camera is better than canon g7x, and nikon s900, i do videos and I want good quality , what do you recomend? Thanks for the review

  • @BandH

    @BandH

    9 жыл бұрын

    Mega Mayra The A5100 has a larger sensor than both the Nikon P900 and Canon G7X, and has the ability to swap out lenses. This can allow for better image quality including more detail in shots and better low light performance. The G7X and P900, as point and shoot cameras, are going to be a different type of animal: they also differ from each other quite a bit. The Nikon P900 is a super zoom point and shoot. You won't find that amount of range in a lens for the A5100. But what you gain in versatility and convenience, you will be losing in overall image quality and low light performance. The G7X is an excellent camera as well. When it comes down to which camera to go with, it would really depend on what you are looking for in a camera and what/how you shoot. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

  • @BandH

    @BandH

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Vanessa Castellanos The two cameras are very different and not really two types I would normally compare side by side. The sensor size used in the Fuji Finepix S1 Pro is very very small compared to the APS-C sized sensor used in the Sony A5100. That affects many things such as the overall image quality, autofocus speed and accuracy, depth of field. In this instance I would personally go with the Sony A5100 simply because the larger sensor will yield better overall images, and the camera is still a compact model to go with, and additionally has the options of other lenses to use on it aside from the packaged kit lens. However, if an incredible zoom range is a priority, than the Fuji would be the way to go. ? Yossi

    +Marta Mutti The best quality recording setting in camera for the a5100 would be XAVC-S 1920 x 1080p / 60 fps (50 Mbps). As far as shutter speed is concerned, that will vary depending on your lighting conditions, if you're subject is fairly static I would just make sure you are no lower than 1/60th especially in lower light. Note when uploading to KZread, the XAVC-S video file would need to be converted to an accepted file format. You can view supported KZread file formats here: bit.ly/LzvREj and full instructions on uploading here: bit.ly/1qZLCZj *Andrea

    can we but a mount or adapter for canon or nikon lenses right?????

  • @BandH

    @BandH

    8 жыл бұрын

    +mustafa butmah - There are adapter options for both Nikon and Canon lenses to Sony E-mount cameras, yes. At this time, the Nikon options would not allow for communication between the lens and camera, so auto functions such as autofocus would be lost. There are some auto adapters for Canon lenses, however, that would enable the Canon lenses released after 2006 to retain auto functions including autofocus. If you would like some specific recommendations, you might send our Photo Department an email. *Christina* AskPhoto@bhphoto.com bhpho.to/1SIw3Bv

    How is the stabilization when shooting handheld video?

  • @BandH

    @BandH

    9 жыл бұрын

    The a5100 body itself does not have built-in image stabilization: Sony incorporates image stabilization into some of their E-mount lenses. That being said, the 16-50mm lens that comes with the a5100 in the lens and body option does have OSS (Optical SteadyShot), which is Sony's version of image stabilization. It will provide relatively 4-stops of compensation. This would allow for both sharper video and images when shooting hand held. *Christina* askbh@bandh.co

It delivers excellent still image quality, and offers 1080p HD resolution in video capture. The autofocus is extremely fast so your more likely to capture every moment as they occur and the lens packaged with it has very nice image quality and sharpness. It's been out for some time and there are not any real complaints or drawbacks reported from users. It's a good choice. - Yossi

But if people want to record for more than 20 minutes they should buy a camcorder instead. The picture quality is amazing and you can see yourself record this is a perfect first camera enjoy.

The lens would not be able to focus on anything closer than that. +nic d For most everyday shooting they will both product good results. The a5100 does pose some advantages however. For stills, the a5100 would be a bit faster boasting 6fps vs. the 4.2 fps of Canon. The Sony will also have a more expanded autofocus system with 149 points of phase detect AF (49 for the Canon) which lends itself to better and more accurate continuous focusing, especially for action. And the expanded native ISO range of the Sony would prove rather useful in lower light. For video much is the same, however the a5100 is able to provide 1080 x 1920p 60fps, where the M3 tops out at 1080 x 1920 at 30fps. *Andrea

The only time i need to dive into the menu is when i'm on a tripod and i need to turn the stabilization off and that's it. zampination Thanks for the update! I just ordered the kit for my wife to replace her Canon G7x. Her biggest complaint with it is that it often has a lot of shutter lag, basically by time taken up from focusing and recharging the flash. How's the a5100 in this regard? She'll probably keep the settings on P and Auto ISO but she likes quick control of Exposure Compensation +/-. Is there provision for that? Also, what lenses do you recommend? She'll occasionally want to shoot tele but mostly the 16-60 will be fine. Thanks again.

    The kit lens is more than adequate for any purposes in my opinion. The flash is weak for outdoor use but great as a fill flash if you're close to your subject. For indoors it's amazing when bouncing it of the ceiling or side walls when taking vertical shots. Sometimes it does take some time for the flash to recharge before you can shoot again. I suggest to grab one and test it yourself to see if it fits your needs. Exposure compensation is used with the wheel dial in every mode except manual. She won't have any problems for quick adjustments regarding that. The kit lens is amazing at f8 when the exposure is right. I'm a pixel peeper myself and this shot here is untouched and totally unprocessed without any sharpness at all. Raw file into Lightroom and then straight out export to a JPEG. Without any noise reduction. Check it yourself flic.kr/p/ss4YBA

    zampination have you noticed in overheating when recording longer video with the a5100? That seems to be a common complaint when I read reviews on it. That's the only thing stopping me from purchasing it.

    sony a5100 or canon g16?

    +jazi The two cameras are very different and not really two types I would normally compare side by side. The sensor size used in the Canon Powershot G16 is very small compared to the APS-C sized sensor used in the Sony A5100. ? +Mobographer The Sony A5100 would outperform the now discontinued Fuji X-A1, and the current Fuji X-A2. The 5100 would have faster autofocus as it boasts 179 Phase Detection and 25 Contrast Detection auto focus points as compared to the 49 Contrast detection points on the X-A2. You’ll also find better low light performance and higher resolution with the A5100. *Andrea

    Hi. I got my camera(A5000) a few days ago and the quality seems a little fuzzy which I don't like. Is this how the camera is or do I need to adjust it somehow in settings? If so, how please? Thanks so much

    Sick to death of taking a shot of a moving subject that is blurred all the time, I just want a digital camera where I can point at a jet or a runner and it will capture without the blur
