She was supposed to leave for work, but suddenly "became ill". Then she opened the door to someone she knew. ..and the person knew she'd "become ill" and stay at home. Sounds like it was supposed to be a secret they'd meet.

The husband paid for all the extra testing and investigations. He kept the house as a shrine to her because it was the last place she was alive and he couldn't let her go. Psychologically these are not the acts of someone who is the killer. He really couldn't let her go. He even left the drops of her blood uncleaned. Maybe he hoped that if any future investigations needed to be done, if he kept everything the same, they could see the crime scene preserved.

I have a cousin who’s wife died (cancer) about 5 years ago, and he, too, has kept the house the same as when she was alive. Clothes still on the bench at the end of the bed, etc. It’s not as uncommon as people think.

I NEVER answer my door, period. No one can tell if I'm home or not. If I AM expecting someone, I still check to make sure it's them. This story broke my heart. For her to open the door, she knew her killer. 😢

I don't either. I wouldn't even answer the door for a cop whp was looking for info on the neighbors at 2 in the morning. If he wants me, he can have the department call me and tell me a REAL officer is outside my door. I told my sister I wouldn't answer any door in the middle of the night. So, if someone dies, they'll still be dead in the morning anyway.

I don't answer my door either. It drives me nuts that my husband answers for anyone who knocks and often has to shoo away scammers. I keep saying, stop answering the damn door!

Oh how i wish the dead could talk or give some kind of clues. Unsolved cases are beyond frustrating

It's as if the letter sender wanted to make Kay look like a wh ore. Perhaps it was a jealous woman who knew about Kay's life and past and was jealous of her. Whoever killed Kay might have been a professional due to the lack of evidence.

@@ceilconstante640 I completely agree, they do need to look into her friend. Something is not right, and even that former assistant of Kay's husband said that Karen spoke badly of Kay behind her back.

She stayed home that day. Red flag #1 is that she chose to change her behavior that day. How many people were aware of that and could have acted that quickly to take advantage of the fact? It's super short notice if she truly only changed her plan for the day without warning anyone ahead of time. So, she either decided to skip work because she had spontaneously made plans to perhaps meet someone, or she wasn't feeling well and called in sick, and one of the few people who were aware of the fact that she was now home for the day took the opportunity to catch her there alone. And of those few people, one of them was extremely angry at her.

I think the assistant hired the guy in the sketch to perform the hit. She used the 'off the books' money from her boss to pay for it, so the transaction was untraceable. She is also one of the few people who would know that Kay was home sick that day, since they worked together. And of course, she would know that Kay didn't like the house and some of those other personal things in the letter.

I posted about seeing this one various times over the years. After finishing watching it again, I only have 2 theories: 1 - recent affair gone sour, or ex boyfriend from distant past carried out a long held grudge 2 - Karen hired a hit, hitman didn't have access to a gun so he used a knife, Karen didn't benefit financially afterward like she thought she would. #1 explains the violent nature of the crime only #2... - also explains the violent nature - explains the profiler saying that a female sent the “magazine letter” - explains the letter trying to redirect cops focus to an affair as the motive - explains Karen constantly checking with the police for case progress - explains Karen calling Hal away from the house the morning of the crime - explains Kay's autopsy showing no recent intimate activity (no affair). #2 does seem to fit pretty well. I wonder if Karen thought Hal would marry her after Kay died, & Karen would inherit most of his fortune.

@@steveknick1978 I believe whole heartedly that what you have stated is 99.9% True! That would also explaine why it's still a cold case. Detectives need to call her back in and then question her motives again and telling her of these explaniaries and then watch her body language because if Karen is lying, she would unconciously be aware of her body language as she would be too focused on how to answer the questions.

This case haunts me. It's so scary to think that not even experienced detectives can find the person cause he was THAT professional.

Follow the money…I believe the person who benefited was the blonde woman who was her husband’s “right hand man”. She comes across as someone with a lot to hide, motive, and awareness of Kay’s schedule. That is the way forward.

one thing that’s not suspicious to me is the husband wanting to keep the house exactly how it was (including the blood) AND stay there. grief is weird & sometimes we hold onto any tiny little piece that was from them when they were alive, even her blood. that actually made me really sad for him to hear he hates going home, but won’t leave that house 😭 he prob felt like it was betrayal to leave “her” (in spirit) there alone.

He was elderly & 2 years away from dying of a heart attack. So he probably doesn’t feel great physically, & then you add a massive pile of grief on top of that. Not sure why anyone is suspicious of him not changing things or cleaning every last drop of blood up…maybe his eyesight wasn’t even good enough to see the blood drops.

It reminded me of a recent epsiode of Dateline, the one with the bicyclist who was murdered in her friend's home. The friend found her and gave CPR. She said that when she cleaned the blood off her hands she felt absolutely awful, because the blood was all she had left of her friend. A few of those investigators on this 48 Hours ep seems to lack an understanding of human nature..

The letter makes me think a female composed it because of the reference to Kay "hating" her house. Generally, I think a man would not mention that , especially after all the "lies'& love" etc.

I think the key lies in what the killer did after he killed her. The steps he took around the house. Up the stairs and into her closet and who knows where else. He was looking for something otherwise why bother. Get out. This is why he didn't use a gun. Someone always hears the gun shot. He was very stealth and professional in my opinion.

Yeah that bothers me. Did the assailant went upstairs just to wipe some blood? That's weird because the attack took place in the kitchen area, there should be some kind of wipe or cloth there, or maybe use the sink if he wanted to do a little cleanup.

The estate stopped paying for the investigation to continue as soon as he died. Whoever is running the estate/his beneficiary would know how desperately he wanted to bring her killer to justice, but his wishes were not carried out after his death. Who is in charge of the estate? Who is his beneficiary? This seems like an incredibly obvious course of investigation, and I don’t know why it was left out of this video. A typical first question people always ask (and rightfully so) is who stood to benefit from the victim’s demise?

His children were likely grown & had little or no connection to Kay. They may even resent her for bringing some portion of this drama into Hal’s life, & him dying just 2 years later. Are they really going to take their portion of the inheritance - which was already reduced by money Hal spent on the investigation- & continue to put more money toward it? Of course not.

It definitely was Personal. No break in, so she knew the person or felt ok enough to open the door. They made sure not to drive in the neighborhood so no vehicle tag could be recorded. Nothing was missing, so it wasn't a robbery. This wasn't random, but very thought out. I feel so sorry for her Husband & Sister. 🙏🏽

What makes you think she turned her back? She apparently answered the door mid-morning. At that point the killer may have forced his way in. After that he punches her like the investigator said, she crawls away to the kitchen & he kills her there.

I thought this originally as well, however, the letter could have been posted from any local box. This person importantly has the same avoidance of detection abilities as the killer. They may quite plausibly be one in the same.

The way that the sister laughed at Karen Scott “She was my Best Friend”… & then Karen not want to interview for her BEST FRIEND … Right Karen! We know you did it !!!!!!

Nobody knows who did it!! As you could see in the movie, the sister didn't know a lot of things about what K was doing and who she was close friends with.

Couple things I felt needed expounded on in this episode was why the estate halted the investigation and withdrew the reward money. Who was in charge of the estate? Lawyers? Family members? What was the reasoning? Second was the autopsy report. They stated how she died, that it was a sharp force instrument and how they think her throat was slashed, but is that from the report? The coroner would be able to tell which side it started from and where it ended. As far as those that are suspect in my mind: Firstly, the "best" friend. She had the most to gain and I feel she wanted Hal and wanted Kay's life. The letter may have been a red herring, but if I had to pick an author, it would be her. A man wouldn't mention the house. The friend had money issues of which Hal was constantly bailing her out of. I could see her getting angry with Kay for shirking what Hal provided her and being grateful, instead complaining about it. She resonated with me the most as far as sus. The second would be the identity of the man in the photo, who age progressed, could be the man in the sketch. Not that he's sus, it seems a strange coincidence that needs sorted out. Just my thoughts though. I hope they solve it for her sister's sake. I can't imagine living with a situation like this... not knowing.

1. that doesn't need to be expounded on... unless he specifically put in his will that he wanted to continue funding the investigation, the estate has no obligation to continue. 2. the coroner isn't necessarily gonna be able to tell which side the cut started from

We think cameras are everywhere but in 2008 they were far less common.

The husband did it. He hired a professional killer. Then he paid for his own investigation team to keep any suspicion off of him.

My thoughts as well.

I think the letter was the work of a woman. There was almost a craft element to the letter. There was too much writing, Only a woman would "talk" so much. The denigrations has a spiteful, jealous feeling to them. According to the autopsy, Kay hadn't had sex in a while. There was also no digital trail pointing to a lover. Why would the "best friend" not want to be interviewed? A genuine best friend, or even casual friend would do anything to get the case solved. Unless of course she was the one responsible. The best friend would know lots of details that were in the letter. I think the reason for the letter was to further destroy her reputation. This is simply not the way men usually communicate. I do not think the "best friend" did the act herself. Such brutality in female killers is not unheard of, but it is unusual. Whether she did, or hired someone, she is the most likely person responsible for her death. The primary motive was jealously.

I’m not sure how this case will be solved but I have feeling it will be. So strange

The letter is obviously total bogus. It does seems like someone was getting investigated and tried to mislead the detectives with that letter.

I don't like to blame a d*ad husband and I of course might be wrong, but, the things that were said in that letter were almost like things she may have actually said to him in an argument for example, like, she hated the house, her 'old fat' husband or something along those lines. 'She told me'....I don't know, that letter pointed to him imo. He dissed himself by saying what she had said to him..and also she had been cheating. 'She only wanted him for the money'. I think it's him, angry and hurt by how she made him feel and I wonder if his right hand woman 'made' the letter.

Q1. Are the investigators saying because a cell phone is at home a person must be at home? Not true.

It was the husband who killed her and he sent that serial killer letter to throw the police off his trail. He also gathered together this group of retired cops to make it look like he was trying to help find out who did it but really was further from the truth.

Nope. If he ordered the hit…. - Hal wouldn’t spend a dime on an investigation that might eventually lead back to him. Police find the hitman & he would give Hal up to avoid the death penalty. - Hal wouldn’t stay in the house because it would be a constant reminder of guilt

@@mv5075 name a situation where a killer ever hired investigators to work the case. It doesn’t happen & makes no sense. People usually take out a spouse for 1 of 3 reasons (or a combo of them): 1 - love 2 - money 3 - child custody Hal didn’t remarry (love), he had all the money in the relationship, & they shared no kids because they were older. He doesn’t have any of the classic motives.

I feel like they suspected Hal, and anything that poor man did was viewed as suspicious. If he’d had the house cleaned, they’d question why he was erasing evidence. He left it as a living tomb, and they are suspicious as to why he didn’t clean it.

These are one of the reasons I want to be a detective one day. Cases like this. I feel horrible for her family, especially her sister and husband. Justice hasn't come for them yet and it's a pain to think about. I want to be able to be the kind of person to help solve cases like this. Cold cases, no matter how long it's been, no matter if the murderer or the family is dead. Justice is something that should be given to the victim either way. The world has to know who the horrible person is so they would have a horrible image even in their death.

you sound sweet.. but.. the cold reality is.. these are RICH whyte people.. rules don't apply to them.. you're gonna find out REAL quick that some crimes they WANT left unsolved.. irrespective of their APPEARANCE to care.. the money is always the goal.. the money dried up.. so.. those detectives stopped giving a damn.. because they never cared to begin with.. they were motivated by Hal's money.. NOT motivated to SOLVE the crime.. think about it.. FOUR "professionals" sitting at that table and.. collectively.. they couldn't find their way out of a paper bag!! the ineptitude at that table is astounding!! OR is it that they simply DGAF now that the money stopped flowing like water from Hal's vulnerability?

It may and could be very dangerous but taking a big risk is a big part of it and I'm willing to take it to help others. It is really sad how people can get driven by money.

Have they thought about checking the piece of glove for DNA and using familial DNA to find someone they're related to? I think that may be the only way to solve the case. It perked me up watching this story when they told about the cut and paste letter was mailed from Augusta, GA because that's where I live. I sure hope they solve this case. I felt so bad for her husband and the fact he left the house like it was. I think he left it like that because it was her there as creepy as it may sound to others. He was so heartbroken I don't believe he had anything to do with it but I think that woman claiming to be her best friend definitely could have. The thing she had to gain was Hal. I think she wanted Kay's life. I believe she didn't think Kay deserved Hal.

This is why I have hidden cameras inside and outside of my home...You never know what can happen with all the crime going on in this scary world...and only I know that I have hidden cameras...In Kay's case I feel that she knew the person that killed her since she opened the door for this person..She stayed home that day and someone knew that..She wasn't robbed or raped..So this was a premeditated hit on her

She literally changed her plans at the last minute. Not only that but the perpetrator had to be EXTREMELY comfortable in the home..

I believe the husband is the scorned lover here and he probably found out that she was cheating on him or told him she was going to leave him and he had her killed. The note was most probably made by the best friend because she gained a lot from her death. Unfortunately her husband did a great job in throwing off investigators by his involvement in the investigation himself.

He ripped off a lot of wealthy people, and one of them was angry enough to take from him what he most loved. The hired assassin is utterly cold-blooded, seems to enjoy his work. It will never be solved. Too many suspects.

They should have examined Hal more closely. Did he benefit financially from her death (e.g. was she an over spender, did he collect insurance $, was she controlling of how he ran his business, did she keep a tab on how he spent his $, etc?). His smiling demeanor at 12:50, is quite strange. Only a person very close to her would have known that she was sick that day and acted quickly. Only a person well aquainted with that house could have pulled it off without leaving evidence.

This may be far fetched, but could the husband have done it because he was having an affair with Karen and all his and her actions afterward were to make it seem like he was the grieving husband and she the sorrowful best friend? The fact of the towel with blood on it upstairs seems to say this person knew where things were and they didn't make a mess in the house? I don't want to believe that he was the perpetrator but stranger things have happened.

He's my no 1 suspect but I'm not sure he was having an affair but I might be wrong. I think she may have said those things in the letter in arguments maybe...like he was 'old and fat' and he felt she only married him for his money. She had also been cheating. I think he put the hurt in the letter and also it deflected from him. I think he hired private detectives to make it look like he wanted answers but he felt confident enough they wouldn't find any. I think Karen helped him and possibly 'made' the letter.

@@mightymouse1005 I'm not convinced he was having an affair, but I think she had affairs and of course this is just a theory, but if others knew she hated her house and this appeared in the letter - well that was a bit of an alarm bell to me. I wondered if she threw it at him in arguments and perhaps called him the names that were in the letter..and that she was only with him for the money sounds like he could be feeling that way...he felt that that's the only reason she was with him. I thought he might have had enough of feeling used and verbally ab*sed. I think anyone would spend money on a PI to make it look like they didn't do it if it meant they stayed out of jail and they had the money to spare! As I said, just a theory, but the letter felt a bit odd to me and I thought perhaps Karen might have helped him out with that part.

Apparently, there were no surveillance cameras available around the house. What about surrounding areas? Nothing?

This was back in 2008.

My mother was removed by ambulance 11/2020 She passed away December 6 from Covid. The house remains exactly the same. I now live with my father because he needs medical attention and I’ve yet to do anything to the property because I want my dad to live in a house that he and Mom lived in . Why in the world would I change the house around it’s what is comfortable to Dad. So that part I don’t understand?? I guess everyone’s different

It seems so obvious to me that the husband Hal kill3d her. That letter sealed it for me, reminds me of a movie where the suspect sent a letter bashing himself & the victim to divert attention. Hal planned the perfect murd3r; putting up reward money, hiring detectives, holding on to the house/ her things…all a ploy to look like a distraught & devastated husband. We’ve seen it before. He may have experienced guilt afterwards which could explain some of his actions but I personally think it was all an act. He could’ve been obsessed with her, tired of her cheating, fetishes, or it could’ve been as simple as a fight leading him to hiring someone.

The husband will be most likely or one of her siblings

Especially if they feel betrayed...Stephanie Lazarus shot, beat and bit her victim; Jodi Arias stabbed her ex boyfriend 27 times, slit his throat and shot him; Omaima Nelson repeatedly stabbed her husband with scissors before beating him with an iron and castrating him...then butchered him on the kitchen floor, putting his head in the freezer so she could break out his teeth and boiled his hands. The "she's 'just' a girl" and "a 'mother' could never be this violent" routines are getting old. It's time to bring profiling into the current century.

I think it was more about the force of the surprise punch, no defensive wounds, how easily Kay was overpowered and how women rarely slit throats. I agree, women can be just as bad as men, but when you add it all up in this case, I have to agree with the investigators. They are looking for a dude.

They keep saying ‘him’ but it could be a woman. I think a woman could be that brutal and it was definitely someone who she was happy to let in her house in Broad daylight so knew them and wasn’t scared of them. Remember she was 60, a woman punching her that hard would floor her, a man punching her that hard would knock her unconscious. I personally think it was someone who wanted her husband and what she had, and wanted this woman out of the picture or if Kay was having an affair, then it was the affairs Wife. The letter was a distraction to make them think it was a man, still think it was a woman who then felt guilty and was scared of getting caught. Don’t think it was a hitman, it was way to personal with the cutting of the throat for that. This was a crime of jealousy

@op it's NOT a woman. The DNA found at the crime scene was MALE. The neighbor witnessed a strange MAN. Furthermore, the average woman doesn't have the strength to cut a throat where it leaves the victim nearly decapitated Do you know how tough & hard the muscles & tendons are to cut through??? Feel your own throat -----feel how muscular it is and how rigid the tendons are. Few women have that strength unless they're body builders or something

It was the husband...as usual! Just look at his demeanor while being interrogated. He did not look distraught. Offering the reward was a ruse. He knew she was home and he didn't need to force entry. Motive? Well he became sick and tired of her screwing around and his anger and resentment exploded. It was overkill...very personal.

She decided to stay home that day. Why? Was she expecting someone she knew to come to the house? In regard to her "secret life" (based on what they found in her wardrobe)...when and for whom was she role playing using that wardrobe? Was she part of a "swingers club" (without Hal?), Where did she play out her fantasies wearing those items? Private homes? Private Clubs? With someone in her own home? A one hour portrayal of a case like this is of course never going to be enough time to explore all the questions still unanswered in addition to the ones continuing to be asked. My heart goes out to her sister and I pray the day comes when whoever did this is caught and brought to justice.

Watching the husband in the interview has me believing he has something to do with it. He didn't seem like he was grieving to me. It seemed like an act. No matter I hope the family gets answers in their life time. Thank you for the case review

I do too. If not him personally, then he knows more. He is too warm and jovial. If he didn't know anything he'd at least have a better idea about a suspect. I know people may say you can't tell by how someone acts when they are supposed to be grieving. I get it. That's not enough to make an indictment. It's an opinion. There are some people, more often men, who act stoic and not show much emotion. But he's not like that. He's all warm and friendly. We did not hear much about his personal life to know how many exes or affairs he had.

Hal had to pay Private Detectives. He knew the police department would cry saying how broke they are and cannot pay for DNA and fiber analysis. I think he knew that it was the only way to get answers. Cutting off the money after Hal's death was suspicious. How bout checking out those individuals

I doubt anyone willfully cut off the funding. Most likely there were no provisions in his will to continue funding the investigation. The executor was probably a lawyer or some other hired professional who was simply doing their job based on what the will stated.

It's weird they keep saying how financially well-off he was...but he was renting the house. And it's not really that spectacular of a house.

I feel like if Hal was really involved he would've immediately cleaned up the blood. The fact that he didn't and left everything exactly the same makes me think he was completely innocent.

Hal & Kay would’ve met when they were older, therefore none of the kids were likely to have a close connection to the wife. They may not have even liked her, so to take their inheritance (which was probably split 2-3 ways) & put more of it towards the investigation is a lot to ask. At some point it’s up to the cops in my opinion but that’s just me.

My scenario: 1. Gansters wanted to buy the mini-shopping mall. They first encountered the wife for discussion. Hal turned down their offer. Other events unknown to us took place...Then the hit was made. 2. The mini-mall was a money laundering business for Hal, gangsters, and Karen. The wife might have become too talkative. Karin could of informed the gangsters, and the hit was made. Karin was actually working for the gangsters as an informant. In other words, a lookout for potential problems.

It’s obvious to me whoever was his beneficiary did it. Does he have kids? They probably didn’t want her to get their money.

Feels like there’s no hope with this one, have seen this episode multiple times over the years. It was definitely personal & violent…comes across like it could be a paid hit, but it’s too violent & personal for the killer to not have a grudge with her specifically. Maybe she was having an affair that turned sour & the other man did it. If there were doorbell cameras back then & they got his car on video, they probably would've solved it. EDIT: after finishing watching it again, I only have 2 theories: 1 - recent affair gone sour, or ex boyfriend from distant past carried out a long held grudge 2 - Karen hired a hit, hitman didn't have access to a gun so he used a knife, Karen didn't benefit financially afterward like she thought she would. #1 explains the violent nature of the crime only #2... - also explains the violent nature - explains the profiler saying that a female sent the magazine letter - explains the letter trying to redirect cops focus to an affair as the motive - explains Karen constantly checking with the police for case progress - explains Karen calling Hal away from the house the morning of the crime - explains Kay's autopsy showing no recent intimate activity (no affair).

Renting a house is a 🚩 for money issues

One other thing I'd check with this case is everyone agrees Kay hated the house she and Hal were renting or did not own----she may have then gone without Hal knowing it to a real estate agent to find a house she did like--maybe the agency listing the house in her neighborhood and perhaps another agent walking around her hood with the house for sale borchure saw her at the agency where he got that brochure---Or maybe she toured the house as he waited in a car with clients toi tour it after her and saw her there---but the FACT a man wandering her area with a borchure in hand for a house he did not tour is really TROUBLING and I think the key to it all.........along with the fact Kay hated her house she was only renting.....

Her husband was trying to pin it on the ex-husband. But Hal is clearly involved - I think he hired someone, and had the hitman ready to do it when she would be home alone. Very few people knew she would be home alone that afternoon. The cut-out letter supports Hal's theory that it was the ex hubby - yet I think Hal glued those letters and mailed it from Augusta. WHY? He disparaged himself (fat and old), he knew she didn't like their house (how many would know that??) he knew she was married before to the "jilted" ex hubby who wrote about it. Hal AGAIN is accusing her ex-husband, but the letter is a RED HERRING written and mailed by Hal. JMO. I also think Hal's conscious bothered him afterward, and he died 2 years later from guilt.

i agree the husband has the money to get kay taken care of she was embarassing him cheating this was his get back

how sure are they about the doctor that looks just like him. i immediately thought it was doctor or someone in the medical field.

See that’s what confused me. I thought the same thing. But then then when they examined her body after she had died, they said there were no signs of recent sexual activity with her husband or anyone else
