Solve Inequalities, Graph Solutions & Write Solutions in Interval Notation

I use the first minute and a half to go over how to read inequality signs and also how to read inequalities when variables are involved. I then cover four inequalities, the last two of which involve reversing the direction of the inequality sign.

    I’ve been told that it’s not so much the actual math (although some of it is helpful!), but the skill of facing a problem and working to solve it. Sticking with the problem and approaching it in different ways is a really important skill!! Also math explains like... the universe. And that’s super duper cool. I wish they’d teach us more of that instead.

    okie so this confuses me a lot because my teacher confused me even more . what way is the line actually supposed to shoot ??. I keep messing this up when it comes to drawing the line to the right side and I never know if I'm correct or not ?? I understand everything else but the line

  • @MrB4math

    @MrB4math

    7 жыл бұрын

    It may help if rather than thinking of "where the line shoots," think of what values "x" can be. (or whatever variable) That is, if you have x>5, than x can be any value greater than 5. x can be 6, or 7, or 10, or 217, etc. It could even be five and a half, or six and two thirds, etc. So rather than trying to put millions of dots for every possible value that x could be, we just draw a thick line to say x could be any of these values. I hope this helps, Mr. B.

  • @MrB4math

    There are other paths to solving this inequality, but the final answer must always match the one I gave, that is r=r. Either way, r is less than or equal to 2. At the start, the -r should be combined with the other "r term" on that side of the inequality, 7r -1r is 6r. Again it's not the only way to proceed, but it is the most efficient. If you are confused by what I mean by "combine like terms, I have a video with that title: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2t72bSDf6zVmLA.html I hope this helps.

    The inequality sign "reverses" or if you like "flips," and as for the negative and positive terms, you end up with q>-5. Thus, the negative term became positive, and the positive term became negative. I'm not sure of your question because it appears to me that in the video the signs do "flip." Please ask more if I can be of help; I will try.

  • @MrB4math

    @MrB4math

    At 2:35 I put -7 on each side and drew a line under it, meaning I subtracted 7 from each side. You only flip the inequality when you multiply or divide by a negative number. The last two problems illustrate this. I hope this helps.

    The direction of the inequality sign only reverses when you multiply or divide each side by a negative number. I appreciate you weighing in, but the video is correct; I divide each side by a positive 3, so the direction of the inequality does not reverse.
