Solving Algebraic Equations (Simplify First, some Parentheses) Alg. Video 3

Building on concepts from the previous two videos, I solve five algebraic equations. They involve simplifying one or both sides of the equation prior to "getting rid of" terms on either side.

    They are so easy to solved. I do everything automatically from years of memorizing. Only in later years did I realize why I am doing it. The equal sign is all powerful and rules the Universe.

    gm, wondering y you didn't divide 11x and 6x they are held by multiplication aren't they? instead, you subtracted the two, I thought that the exponent 11x and 6x meant multiplication and therefore required division first and lastly division for the final step?? ??

  • @MrB4math

    If you just want to get rid of the 11, you would divide, but to get rid of the 11x, you need to add or subtract. I hope this helps. (Also, the 11 and the 6 are coefficients; exponents are written up high after whatever they are being applied to.)

    then why didnt you divide the 6x ? you subtracted it as if it were addition. I thought you are suppose to divide the multiplication....

  • @MrB4math

    @MrB4math

    7 жыл бұрын

    If I only wanted to get rid of the 6, I would divide, because the 6 is held to the x by multiplication. In the case you mention, I want to get rid of the entire "6x," which is held by addition or subtraction, so I use addition or subtraction (with the opposite sign) to get rid of it. I explain this in more detail in the second algebra video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oX6NpNCEgay6YLQ.html I hope this helps. I tried replying sooner, but KZread kept giving me problems.

    Yes, you can put +7 on each side of the equal sign. You end up having to deal with a -2y, but you should still get the exact same answer.

    Like my high school algebra teacher said, "Treat everybody alike". What you do on the left side should also be done on the right side to maintain equality. The equal sign is a very powerful symbol.

    It's a point that gives many people trouble. When multiplying (or dividing) two negatives, you get a positive. But, with addition or subtraction, if the signs are the same, you add and keep the sign. This was a case of adding two negative numbers, so the sum stays negative. My best to you, Mr. B

  • @MrB4math

    Negative times a negative equals a positive, but when you are adding or subtracting, if the signs are the same you add and keep the sign. So for instance, - 5 - 3 = - 8, but - 5 (-3) = 15. For a more detailed refresher on the concepts, you can go to my first video on adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKtoj8igpNfZmMY.html

    Aurora Morales A negative times a negative is a postive value.But if your adding two negatives, such as -5 And -6 it will be a negative value you are making it more negative.But, when multiply 2 negatives the negatives cancel out and creates a positive value.
