There are comments saying your explanation is a nightmare, or over-explaining, or complicating the process; however, these are people who already know how to do the math. Your videos are for people who DON’T know the math. I find them helpful and fast forward past information I’ve learned already from previous videos. Thanks for putting these out. I’ve learned a lot.

Agreed; this explanation seemed scattered and excessive. These videos are usually more succinct. State the proper order and correct result first, then get into the explanation and any necessary discussion of where folks may have gone wrong for those who might need it. Nearly 23 minutes requires more attention than most students would have to give (just like my comment! 😜). But I truly do appreciate these math refreshers. Thank you!

When I was young this was simple but somewhere along the way they changed the rules. Simply stated, math is very precise so expressions need to be precise. Instead of P.E.M.D.A.S it should be (P).(E).(M.D).(A.S) or something similar to clarify order of operation.

The problem with basic math is that everyone forgets the rules that you learn from elementary and secondary, for which I believe should be added to every test and it's not cheating, some people have photographic memories while others learn by repeating. Order of operation is forgotten for some, just a suggestion to either right it on the chalkboard or on the test paper

I'd like to XPress My Answer is -5. :) Technically, there is no such thing as subtraction, only addition of a negative number. And division is but the multiplication of the reciprocal value you are dividing by. Also, back in my day, if someone handed you an equation like 5*4 / 3+1-2, you would hand them it back and tell them to format it correctly.

I’m going to make a suggestion: after going through the process of solving a problem end these tutorials by presenting a practice problem with four choices and a key code. Set up a web page that only has key codes and the corresponding correct answer (from the aforementioned multiple choices). One page should easily handle 16 or 60 lines of keycodes, times four if you put them into columns too. Maintaining one page shouldn’t be that onerous and as a teacher I needn’t tell you the value of practicing the same skills just taught. Anyway, as I said, a suggestion.

Multiplication having higher precedence than addition has been the way mathematical notation works for a few centuries now. Acronyms like PEMDAS seem to have been around for 100 years ish, maybe a bit longer. Actually teaching these rules in the context of simple arithmetic was more patchy in the past than it is now though. Some people who learned in the 70s or earlier were taught this, but certainly not everybody. It doesn't really matter for this question though, because reading it left to right gets the correct answer anyway.
