Technically none of them are correct because the question is invalid. We don't use mixed numbers like 2¾ in a mathematical expression like that. They’re OK for expressing a single value in isolation but they’re not correct notation within a mathematical expression. If we assume you wrote the beginning of the question correctly as 2 + ¾ +… or 11/4 +… then the answer is 43/12. Interesting that you present the correct answer as an improper fraction but you didn’t use an improper fraction in the question.

That's an elementary level problem. Elementary 4. In my classes, it was PEDMAS instead of PEMDAS. Same thing, different way of writing it. 43/12 can't be reduced. As 43 is the 14th prime number. Yes, I DID memorize the prime numbers up to 100.

One thing I've noticed while tutoring at the local middle school and Jr college: an improper fraction is now the preferred answer rather than adding in a division task.

Nothing wrong with improper fractions. Expressing an answer like this as an improper fraction is normal. Particularly if, as is often the case, you're working out the value because you need to do something with it (more calculations, substitute it back into an equation or formula, or whatever).

to include sales tax you would multiply the amount by 1.07. So to remove the sales tax you simply divide the amount by 1.07. Then you're left with the new higher cost of the coffee, the coffee doubled. So you then divide this amount by 2. ( 12.5 / 1.07 ) / 2 = 5.84 (approx)
