Thanks John, Being not a native English speaker, living abroad, and considering that I never did any studies, nor achieved any course, in a anglophone country, I have not any knowledge of the English maths vocabulary. So, I was kind of dubious about what you meant by the term "number line". That's why I assumed it was precisely what you meant and I used the word "x axis" to make me clear Thank John, beyond maths, your videos allow me to improve my understanding of English language. Take care.
Got both. Number line was a give-away for 2 solutions. Thanks for the fun.
The other number is either -11 or 27, but without more information we cannot tell which one it is.
I'd say there is two solutions. If the number line is a regular x axis, the solutions are -11 or 27.
27, -11
I got 28. He's looking for ONE number BETWEEN (exclusive of end points) two numbers. Also, one does not measure distance with a number line. What if the distance is 19.5 units? (What's half a mile?)

Got it! Fooled me once with "the other number" but not twice. ;)
At the thumbnail, the answer is 27 OR -11. It depends on whether we're looking at just the counting numbers or all whole numbers.
The question is wrong. It should read, "what are the numbers?"
@samuelhawkins1358

It’s correct because they are technically both a number. What further makes it correct is the questions says on the number line. And on a number line negative numbers are included
Could be 27 or -11. Would have been a much better question if this were on the complex plane.

Why?
The rule of 3. Read the question 3 times. The question only asked for one number ... not numberS

The answer is ... The number is either 27 or -11. Note that I said "number", not "numbers". You assumed too much.

@@MrSummitvilleI fear that I must assume too much too. If the question is what is the other number that is singular, not plural, either would indicate there is 2 numbers, not 1 that the singular in the question indicated. The question seems incomplete as written, I immediately knew there were 2 possible numbers possible, but I couldn't figure out if you wanted the positive or negative response as written.

If the distance “between” two numbers why would the numbers be 28 or -12?

My thoughts - almost exactly. The question asks for ONE number!
@gavindeane3670

They wouldn't. The other number is either 27 or -11. There is not enough information in the question for us to be able to know which.

Maybe he's trying to show how problems can be deceiving. But that's confusing to students because we teach them to look for context clues.

8 and 28 or -28. If you are talking numbers or distance.
@gavindeane3670

Neither 28 nor -28 are 19 away from 8. The other number is either 27 or -11, but we can't tell which.
27 We know the smallest number ( as the number is less than the answer) The difference is the largest- smallest So changing the order we have ? - 8 = 19 19 + 8 = ? (27)
@gavindeane3670

We don't know that the starting number is less than the answer. One number is 8. The other number is either 27 or -11 but we aren't given enough information in the question to know which it is.

I think Adventures in Cyberspace was a little more complex than this. But this Tot Math might make for a sandbox openworld fungame of some kind. You could meet nfcs who only allow you to pass if you can solve the problems. And, of course, the boss fight is a bigtime Math problem. And the prize is a free pass to 6 flags magic mountain with x number of free rides, number depending on how quickly you solve probs in a Math comp at the park. No cheat guarantee. The Mathletes have will know it_s not rigged. Unless, of course, the cheaters get hold of the answers as in Perfect Score.
This whole problem, I'm assuming, is predicated on the fact that the student has been introduced to the absolute value concept. Otherwise, it's unfair to the student.
