What are your favorite jigs for smelt?

Love the smelt content! I’ve been curious about trying for them in open water. We hammer them in a pop up with a live scope up here in southern central maine during the winter. We also go 4.5 hours north catching big freshwater water jacksmelt. 2 things I’d love to share to see if they work for you are 1) Hali Jigs - they sink fast, glow, you can jig them by themselves or at the bottom of a sabiki 2) you should bring a razor sharp knife and a cutting board, sacrifice your first smelt and cut the smallest, thinnest pieces that will just barely stick on the hook but not cover the tip! Smelts are infamous cannibals!

I haven't used Hali jigs yet, I almost bought some a couple weeks ago though to try. I have cut up smelt in the past for bait and they do work good when I'm out of silverides to cut up or shrimp.

I do actually. I start usually around now. I get some big Tommy cod sometimes up to 12" plus.

This video was more for just showing that plain jigs work for smelt rather than getting big smelt. I have caught some very nice smelt this year in my other videos. Someone made a request for this. I ended up using them for bait for white perch and catfish.

@@davedeefishing I would still catch my 20 fish limit on the macks before moving on, i love tinker macks on the grill.

I had probably about 20lbs on my freezer from a week earlier. They were in thick this year close to shore.
