M Hagentoft on Linux if you bond the NICs, then it just works with things like NFS. Depending on the load, this can be a minor to a huge throughput difference. I don't touch Windows, so not sure how filesharing can be best handled as an NFS client is hard to find. In case you cared :)

I just set up my FreeNAS with Plex, did it successfully, I just found that their old video while good was very outdated, it would have been very helpful to have an updated one but if 10 will bring such large changes then waiting for 10 is probably the best bet.

Just thought I would post here letting you know that I have a casual interest in SMB multichannel. Well, to be fair, I think I just love nerding out on all of this stuff. You guys do a great job of taking an esoteric subject and making it very approachable. Am I going to go implement anything like this? Actually, I just may. Didn't think I would, but these videos make it look really cool. Thanks again for the awesome content!

it's awesome you did a video about this. I just got an ASRock fatality pro i7 x99 and I've been wanting to mess around with the dual NIC. so far in my testing I like how the 211AT NIC seems to perform, but the other one is a 218. I'll watch this again. I've known about MSI, but I never connected the dots between MSI and RSS. oh, I have a drobo 5n Nas but he isn't anything to do with this, I just like to mess around to learn. and since I have 3 computers plus a Nas and 4 phones and a printer in my network, network stuff is kinda fun.

Remember if you are managing servers and using SMB multi-channel you need to use SMB constraints to reserve one of the NIC's for management tasks. This ensures that you don't have degraded, over the network, control of your server due to link saturation.

I'm curious, if you have multi-nic pc's, servers, and the patience to run a second layer of networking cabling to connect all the two. If you wouldn't fair better using the second physical network ( organized by subnet or vlan or ??? ) as a storage layer, and the primary layer for usual traffic ( more inline with the traditional fibre channel or iscsi topographies). Rather than ganging or bonding all the interfaces. If you were to do some high level network analytics.. is there that much benefit, ignoring all the teething pains you mention ?

(iPerf linux to linux says 950mb/s or so, so the nics can handle GB, the OS on main Pc is Ubuntu based, Linux Lite or Linux Mint mainly.)

This cool, but my network is a mutt mix of OS's. lol Three on W10, fileserver on FreeNAS, pfSense, and some Arch for good measure. Plus random VM's I run to play with other stuff. I have found SMB to be a mixed back. I am using SMB to share a couple data sets to my network. One thing I have noticed is that if I try to delete files on the server from the over the SMB share on my main machine via windows, it's super slow to to the delete. But, if I go into the web UI and open the shell and do it, pretty quick. I am talking about a near 1tb folder. It can take a couple hours from the Win machine. But the CLI command is a few minutes at best. Not sure if it's an SMB issue or something else.

I wouldnt mind an hour long video not even a two hour long as long as it had some actual instructions and useful explanations (also timestamps with the topics discussed wouldnt hurt :P )
