    It’s because they are shooting in an 8K capable camera from red, which is one of the few today that can shoot in that resolution. Why would they shoot in resolutions that even Hollywood filmmakers don’t normally use? To put it simply, it's for future-proofing the content, you’ll see having 4K footage today will make it watchable for a good couple of years, but having 8K raw files means they can go back in the future and re-render in 8K, meaning the footage will be good for even more time. Now for Hollywood movies such as you mentioned, today they are shoot mostly in 3k~4K resolutions, in some cases even less like 2.3k, but why would they go low when there is bigger res available? As the Cinematographer Steve Yedlin says, resolution isn’t everything, cameras from Arri goes up to 6K, which is less than Red although Arri has a better sensor, which generates better footage, that’s why Arri cameras are so popular in Hollywood studios, plus Steve argues that even footage shot in 2.3K can be upscaled to look as good in a 4K Blu-ray master as a movie shot in 4K and mastered in 4K. But of course, you can upscale up to a certain point until the footage starts to look bad. For reference look Planet Earth from BBC, it was shoot in 720p, which at the time was high end stuff, but since then the display technology improved quite a bit, so they can upscale the footage, but past certain resolution will look like shit, the Planet earth Blu-ray master is up to 1080i, in the next few years will start to look dated. Compare that to Baraka which was filmed 13 years earlier, it was shot in 65mm film and can be scanned to very high resolutions without losing any quality, that's because film is naturally high res, while digital will be stuck to a certain time frame of the technology.

    Honestly this is the best video I've seen from Linus in a while. I like when he does this type of video. He's sharing knowledge that a lot of people would never share. It's great to see how others network and solve issues so you yourself get even better, even if you feel confident. There are so many ways to set up a network. The more you know the better obviously. Thanks for sharing guys.

    What I liked most about the video is getting a glimpse of how the team works together. By showing their work flow he showed how they would have to communicate to get all this done, and that's waaaaay more informative than anything tech related, which you can just read about and know. Interacting with other humans, with opinions and who have bad days, is a lot harder than learning how a server works, and him showing this is very enlightening to anyone struggling to manage a team of content creators...or a team at all really.

I was like a 2nd tech guy that a lot of the teachers would say we’re more helpful that the main tech support and I would run around the halls teacher to teacher helping them with technology problems. One day I found my mom uses Google Drive and she downloads the files whenever she needs to use them and never opens it again after she downloaded it because she never knew that they were saved. She had 30+ copies of every file saved no joke!

    Why does Linus need so many servers just to store videos? Just post it on KZread and delete the dam data. If KZread went down and you lost your videos so what? There wouldn’t be another site anyway like KZread where Linus could suddenly thrive to the point he’d need his old videos to repost and no one would wanna watch old videos anyway . And KZread will probably not go down anytime soon so just ditch the local servers Linus stop trying to pretend your a legitimate large tech company with your “servers”. Datacenters with storage servers actually serve clients your videos are hosted on KZread so Don’t waste money on servers. Oh wait your sponsored so you pay for nothing

    The auto transcoding is just a built in feature of Media Encoder. I have no use for it myself, but you can tell it to watch a folder and auto transcode that with whatever settings whenever a file is put in there. I personally want to know about that syncing software too though. That is exactly the sort od setup I have wanted to build at my house for a while to make sure our stuff is safe, but without the concern of putting it in someone else's hands.

  • @watchthe1369
    @watchthe13695 жыл бұрын

    I remember working at a startup where we would do a render or transcode. We had a monster desktop machine assigned to each task and we were barely keeping up. This is in the days when a terabyte drive was a 500$ piece of hardware. I understand the tiered system and having a transcode dedicated machine, and having the shadow backup running. We NEVER deleted until the check was in the bank for a project though, then we made the archive copy we called the "Evergreen" that had the raw data and finished project. That served to allow a re-edit to future proof against higher resolutions, the re-edit done from original footage and not the down converted stuff to fit youtube or (Gasp) broadcast TV bandwidths.

    Extremely interesting. I wish you did a lot more server videos. That and going into the specifics of how exactly you automate stuff. Scripts, cron-jobs, etc... all that jazz and how it's configured. I remember Linus talking about making more videos about server equipment and us having to "deal with it". Well, still can't get enough. :P

You also have anazing footage when KZread launches new features or changes the way it handles video compression.

You're on a whole different level as far as a video production house. How does Canada classify your company? Like a Hollywood production house? Lastly, thank you for shooting on an iPhone and Android device. The video wasn't as solid as your R3D footage videos but it still came out really good.

    Its all about time management. You want your staff and the machines they use to be as productive as possible. Imagine having to go around and manually insert/connect the Red camera mags into each of their PC's just to get the footage onto them. You don't do that, you download the footage onto a server that they can then all access... but you want to have fast connections between the workstations and the server too. Then when you encode, you dont want your staff machines sitting there encoding while the editor then takes a break because they can't do anything, so you off load it onto another server for that... Then there is back-ups...

    Many people crying over 'you only 1080p' are the same people who will never understand the basics of downscaling quality from raw footage. If you are working with textures for a game, you'll understand real quick why a 8000x8000 image downscale to 1024x1024 is a million times better than doing it from a 3000x3000 image. Same applies to video footage, a video that has 4k, downscaled on KZread by their encoders, will be much better than uploading the same footage in 1080p directly and then has to be re-encoded by KZread.

    Where the big difference is isn't actually straight down-scaling, its that you can stabilize, reframe ect on the fly during editing if you shoot over resolution and a little wider on the lens. It also gives tools more information to work with in order to perform seemless changes, like rotoscoping without distorting edges. You can also adjust exposure or colors a bit in post without loosing information in the final output by using a wider dynamic range than the final uploaded video. This makes a big difference to real production workflows that can effect viewership.. frankly the tiny advantage in video quality from direct down-scaling does not... especially once its been re-rendered by youtube.

    It was "fine" but not exactly great. There was lots of scenes where the camera kept changing focus and exposure. It would not be ideal to continue shooting on.

    Fine, definitely but great? Meh! But I'd say no one would notice the difference, if you'd just use a 5D or 1D, with a HiDef lense. The stuff that you record Linus, isn't really THAT of an issue for the latest shit in camera technology. Sure, it's geeky and I admire this, but necessary... well, this is up for debate. :)

    Statikk Shiv Windows Server licensing is stupid. Microsoft change the way it works like every other year. One note though is it when Microsoft do business audits, as long as you can prove you have a license, Windows doesn’t have to be activated, saving the hassles if you end up reinstalling windows multiple times in a month

    Not exactly, depends if the PC is registered into an Active Directory, so the license is managed by the local server
