The experiment made Lana's body permanently absorb any kryptonite radiation she was around. Lex created a plan he knew would hurt Clark the most. He created a kryptonite bomb that was gonna blow up Metropolis. Lana had to absorb it to save the city, but she could never see Clark again without killing him. As far as I know she's still saving the world

@michelletomwelling08 yea i completely agree, they had so much chemistry. when Clark and Lana looked at each other you could really believe they were in love. i never sensed that with Lois + Clark. everything seemed so forced with Clois. seeing this after the finale reminded me how good Smallville used to be.
