Lyrics:
Oh it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer
Now the publican's anxious for the quota to come
And there's a far away look on the face of the bum
The maid's gone all cranky and the cook's acting queer
Oh what a terrible place is a pub with no beer
Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He breasts up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a sneer
As the barman says sadly the pub's got no beer
Then the swaggie comes in smothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told, he says what's this I hear
I've trudged fifty flamin' miles to a pub with no beer
Now there's a dog on the v'randa, for his master he waits
But the boss is inside drinking wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and he cringes in fear
It's no place for a dog 'round a pub with no beer
And old Billy the blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he's gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says you're early Bill dear
But then he breaks down and tells her the pub's got no beer
Oh it's hard to believe that there's customers still
But the money's still tinkling in the old ancient till
The wine buffs are happy and I know they're sincere
When they say they don't care if the pub's got no beer
So it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Slim Dusty, AO MBE (born David Gordon Kirkpatrick; 13 June 1927 - 19 September 2003) was an Australian country music singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He was an Australian cultural icon and one of the country's most awarded stars, with a career spanning nearly seven decades and numerous recordings. He was known to record songs in the legacy of Australia, particularly of bush life and renowned Australian bush poets Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson that represented the lifestyle. The music genre was coined the "bush ballad", a style first made popular by Buddy Williams, the first artist to perform the genre in Australia, and also for his many trucking songs. Dusty was the first Australian to have a No. 1 international hit song, with a version of Gordon Parsons' "A Pub with No Beer". He received an unequalled 37 Golden Guitar and two Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Country Music Roll of Renown.

Ripper, first heard then played this song when OR staff at RAF Hospital Wegberg Germany , we had a skiffle group and played at Xmas concerts and various hospital dances and functions. One of his most beautiful songs. I live in Germany, but whenever I treat myself to a cold beer and listen to SLIM, I am allowed to feel a little bit like an Australian. Thanks for that, mate. I’m from south east Texas and, by golly, that’s a great song! Sounds a lot like our country & western tunes. I could feel pretty much at home with these folks!

Grate Australia song well done slim
I attended the recent Remembrance day service here , as some of my ancestors were called up for , or volunteered for , action , the service went appropriately , & afterwards , a couple of blokes came up to me & were talking ( I think they wondered just who the hell I was ! ) , one of them said he was going to the pub for a pint , the other one said " you,ll have a bloody job mate , the pub,s got no beer " ! .......This song & The Great Slim Dusty came straight back into my memory . I,m a brit , not all that proud of it after what,s been done to my country lately , & the ruling section of society,s actions & attitudes in general , I was honouring my own ancestors , & all the other people who were involved . Slim wrote & performed some great music , it,s a good job we can all still enjoy it , long live Slim Dusty .
I love Slim's playing style... he strums using a thumb pick and he strums between the sound hole and the bridge. That's the Slim Dusty Tone =P
another great singer sadly no longer with us rest in peace slim Dusty 🙏

Slim was Aussie country legend , traveled round Oz in an old purple Ford Fairline doing shows with the band and roadies following in a bus ,after he died his did a song in a tribute to him , called Old Purple .
Great song!!!
I have been performing this song for around 60 years and the first verse sung here I never heard before.
2020 the pub with doors closed is worse. Love this guy and his music. I grew up listening to him in my dads car cassette player when I was a kid.

I think this came about when Australia had to divert grain supplies to the war effort and relied on wine for alternative refreshment. I do not know was it WW1 or WW2 but such control of supplies and commodities and pricing was common in all countries in time of war.

I have been there, we had to drink Whisky and Dr Pepper mixed to about 5-7% like most beer. Even the Cola ran out. Now this was in the summer and the American Legion bar of this one in my town has this patio almost on the Missouri River that brings the people in.
I'm Canadian. I like the old American crooner, Marty Robbins. So far as I can tell, Marty Robbins is just an American version of slim dusty. Much love from Canada to Australia. You folk are brilliant. Sending good vibes to the other side of the planet. Yes, it's bloody fucking cold here

I'm Canadian too, the first time I heard it, the Irish Rovers sang it on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation,CBC. I wonder if Stomping Tom Connors or Wilf Carter ever sang that one?
I bought the sheet music and the record back in 1956 when I lived in England, (I still have it & thelittle EP record)- I played in a skiffle group during those years in the RAF, always a top favourite every time we played it. I was playing it last night on my Yamaha keyboard, been living ‘down under’ since ‘68. Thanks, Slim, a top ⭐️. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 😁🎼👍🇦🇺🦘

Brilliant. Auzies and Rhodesians look so alike and have a great same scense of humour.
Sitting in the Arizona desert in a tent ,with my beat up old Akubra, high on weed , drunk as a skunk, In a tent ,realizing I was born in the wrong country , bitching on about my relatives who were English , at least I made it to the AZ desert for life , but damn , I should have been born Australian.

A Pub With No Beer is my favourite Slim Dusty song of All-time. AllanBlack. AllanBlack1977.
I bought a very warped 45 rpm version in the late 50s. I still have it in my collection. Listen to him often. I've been asked to leave a few pubs when I've sung Pub with No Beer. The best Oz after Sir Don.
