Lyrics:
Oh-hoh-hoh-hoh-yeah
It's a long straight road and the engine is deep
I can't help thinkin' of a good night's sleep
And the long long roads of my life were a callin' me
These rough old hands are a-glued to the wheel
My eyes full of sand from the way they feel
And the lights comin' over the hill are a-blindin' me
It's a long tough haul from a-way down south
A man's gotta find a little bread for his mouth
And a home for a girl as sweet as my honey can be
So it's down through the gears, she's a-startin' to pull
The gauge on the tank is a-showin' they're full
And the lights comin' over the hill are a-blindin' me
There's rain on the road and I can feel the load start a-shiftin'
In a dance
Too late, I see the post and I haven't got a ghost of a chance
Ah-hah-hah-no
The windscreen wipers are a-beatin' in time
The song they sing is a part of my mind
And I can't believe it's a-really happenin' to me
Oh, but I'm over the edge and down the mountain side
I know they'll tell about the night I died
In the rain when the lights on the hill were a-blindin' me
Hey!
In the rain when the lights on the hill were a-blindin' me
In the rain when the lights on the hill were a-blindin' me
Slim Dusty, AO MBE (born David Gordon Kirkpatrick; 13 June 1927 - 19 September 2003) was an Australian country music singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He was an Australian cultural icon and one of the country's most awarded stars, with a career spanning nearly seven decades and numerous recordings. He was known to record songs in the legacy of Australia, particularly of bush life and renowned Australian bush poets Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson that represented the lifestyle. The music genre was coined the "bush ballad", a style first made popular by Buddy Williams, the first artist to perform the genre in Australia, and also for his many trucking songs. Dusty was the first Australian to have a No. 1 international hit song, with a version of Gordon Parsons' "A Pub with No Beer". He received an unequalled 37 Golden Guitar and two Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Country Music Roll of Renown.

I'm an American and this is one of my favorite Country songs. Sadly, in the U.S., the robust Country scenes in Australia and Canada don't even seem to be acknowledged as existing. Thank goodness for internet radio, international Country Music charts being posted online, and Australian and Canadian labels putting their music on Spotify.

Slim is the one that made me fall for the trucking industry 36 years ago. This clip brings back memories of when I first started going up and down the old Highways, the days when we could almost slap our mates as the passed us. The industry gave me it's ups and downs, but I'm glad thanks to Slim I chose this work. The new drivers of today haven't got a clue how things were and how it still should be in the Australian trucking industry. Thank you Slim and your Family.

I'm an American by the way and I think Slim Dusty is one of the all time greats in country music anywhere. He does the music from the heart, the straight forward songs from the heart.
