Skoolie Power Center Install: WFCO 8955

The next step in the electrical process was to install the power center. The WFCO 8955 provides breakers for both AC and DC systems. In addition, it will convert AC shore power to 12 Volt DC power and also charge the house batteries when connected to shore power.
I highly recommend reading this book before wrestling with electricity!

    The WFCO 8955 is a good unit. I got one for $150 instead of rebuilding the 15 year old unit that came with my trailer. It has a much better battery charger too, although it doesn't work with Lithium batteries. If I could afford Lithium batteries, I'd probably go all out with a Victron system, which would cost as much as my trailer.

    Hello ! I just subscribed to your channel, really liked the episode! If you don’t mind I have a question on the 12 volt side of the installation. I just picked up the same unit you installed. I did notice the 12 volt side does not have a ground bus bar . So when running your 12 volt items what do you do with the negative wire because the circuit board only has a location for 12 volt positive? I have a build series myself and I’m just coming up on the wiring phase and this part has me scratching my head 🤣! Thanks in advance!

  • @River-Channel

    @River-Channel

    I'm pretty sure that the directions say to buy a separate negative bus bar and connect your negatives to it. However, I attached all my negative wires to the ribs at the source. So, for example, each of my lights and the water pump negative wires attach to the nearest bus rib. That way I can reduce the run length and the wire diameter and also don't need a negative bus bar. Let me know if that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

    Hey man quick question for you. Everything you did makes perfect sense. It cleared up a lot of things for me in my race car hauler I’m building. Did you ever find out if grounding the ac and dc both to the chassis of the trailer was the correct way to go About it?

    I did...I went back and checked the WFCO installation manual and it says "Also, route an 8 AWG Green or bare Ground wire through the small diameter hole located next to the Ground bar to the vehicle chassis." Seems to be working well...had it plugged in all winter to keep the batteries trickle charged. Best of luck with your hauler!

    I did see I your video how you hooked up the black wire with the pig tailed wire nut coming from the converter. Did you add it to a breaker or give it its own breaker? Or did you just leave it? Also did you ever find out if the ac ground that you ran was correct or not necessary? Thanks for your video it helped a lot. Could you show you 12v ground bus bar or how you grounded you 12v that you ran to the panel. I’d you run an in line fuse or a cut off switch from your converter to your battery bank? Would be interested in seeing a video on that if you have one. Looks good man nice work btw

  • @River-Channel

    I gave it it's own breaker; we don't have that many 120 Volt circuits. I did go back to the manual and it said to ground the AC to the frame of the bus, so I'm assuming what I did was correct. I haven't had any problems. I didn't use a 12 volt bus bar, I grounded all the DC circuits to the ribs of the bus. For example, each light has it's own ground to a rib and the water pump is grounded to a rib. I don't have a fuse or a switch to the battery bank. Might not be a bad idea but I didn't even think of it! (I do have just a plain light switch for the water pump, though, so I can shut it off if I need to!) Hope this helps...and keep the questions coming it's nice to refresh my thinking! All the best!

    Near the end you spoke of a “charger” and flipped one the 120v breakers to turn it on and then turned it off the confirm getting a trickle charge. Won’t the Power Center charge the 12v house battery without a separate charger plugged into the 120v circuit and connected to the battery? Great video btw.

    For those of us planning to install batteries in our systems, is it possible to wire things in a way so that the battery could be use to power the distribution centers 12V when not on shore/generator power, instead of wiring all the battery 12V devices off the battery? I'm probably really overthinking this.

  • @River-Channel

    @River-Channel

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm not exactly sure what you mean. When not on shore power, the battery would still continue to power the power center and all the 12V circuits running to it. It just won't trickle charge and 110V circuits won't work unless have an inverter. (Which this WFCO unit doesn't have.). What do you mean by the "battery 12V devices?"

    The AC ground must NOT be connected to the vehicle frame. AC panel ground must be tied directly to the incoming AC supply ground. Directly to shore power ground or directly to generator ground. This prevents accidental electrocutions or AC bleeding into tne 12VDC circuits. A proper transfer switch is used if you have both sources. Otherwise a great video.
