Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I pull out my Keystone 2011 fifth wheel trailer's WFCO WF8955 RV power center for a full clean and inspection. I'll show you what's behind it and explain the wiring.
*Disclaimer: Working with electricity can be dangerous. The video is for educational and entertainment purposes only and should not be taken as instructional. If you decide to do the same then research and beware of the risks involved. I don't advise it without an advanced knowledge of electricity and electronics. I accept no liability. You have been warned! - Ray
Vacuumed and cleaned dust and debris from the power center case, converter circuitry, and enclosure
Looked for signs of water leaks and rodent droppings inside the power center's enclosure
Inspected the wiring looking for signs of overheating, rodent chew marks, cuts or cracking
Checked for loose wires at the screw terminals. Backed off and retightened each to create a fresh bite on the wire.
Cleaned converter and converter fan
Removed and inspected the converter circuit board and looked for cracked solder joints and signs of overheating
After reassemble check each circuit confirming correct voltage
Ran each circuit and checked for overheating of any of the circuit breakers

    Great advice and tips Ray. I just did a similar thing last week. I am going to mount my TRC 41300 auto transfer switch in that space behind the converter. I have my 3000 continuous watt pure sine inverter mounted in the front storage compartment like yours. Now I'm just trying to find the path with the least resistance from the inverter to the space underneath the stove. It's about a 20' run of 10-3 wire for me. I have a wireless remote fob for my inverter and the TRC transfer switch is generator (inverter) dominant. The only thing that I cannot use with this setup is the central a/c unit. The extreme heat and humidity has arrived here in Mississippi and it puts a whooping on me. I may have to finish up this project in September. I'll bet Vancouver weather is very pleasant right now.

    Wish you opened it up years ago and noticed the missing rubber grommets that prevent chafing the wires going through the power center chassis see 2:05. To all the newbies, install a grommet after the wiring has been spooled through, cut the round grommet and install it around the wiring to avoid chafing through causing a short.

  • @LoveYourRV

    Good idea. Looking online at pictures of others it looks like that power center never has them. I guess they think since the wires are run through plastic versus metal they don't need them. But I'm not too shocked, you'd be hard-pressed to find a rubber grommet on any of the RV wire runs. Most of it is using spray foam. Cheaper and quicker I guess.

    If your battery is not getting charged there's 1 simple thing to check before you go through the work and expense of replacing a power center. If you've done any work up in the front of the trailer with your battery or winch and there was an arc you may have popped an inline breaker located up under your frame. Follow the wiring under your frame and locate a small box ( under an inch long and 3/4 inch wide with wires connected to each end with nuts. Feel around the outside of the little box and you should find a tiny button of some sort. Push that button in and you should feel/hear a little click. If it clicks, congratulations. You fixed it. Check the voltage going to the battery and it should now show 13+ volts.

I realized today that my battery was dead and the trailer connected to shore power so I started trouble shooting. The power center looked fine so I started tracking the wiring. Word of warning....if there is solar installed. Always switch the PV input to controller off BEFORE switching the battery disconnect off , as most controllers require batteries to be hooked up when they are generating power from the PV! I swapped out my battery disconnect switch for a dual pole version to simultaneously switch off the PV when I switch off the batteries.

My solar controller was still connected, I have a separate switchable breaker for that. • @LoveYourRV

    They are the DC positive circuits. In many RVs such as mine, white wires are used for DC negative and grounded to the trailer frame. Here is a video clip that explains my use for the InteliPower - kzread.info/dash/bejne/p4aWqc-xpdGXfKw.html I decided to leave my OEM converter charger as is and install the InteliPower right next to the batteries to eliminate any losses in the wiring. My OEM location was so far away about 20-25 feet of 6 GA cable so I didn't want to install there. I still use the OEM on when on hookups to shore power, may as well wear it out I figure. It doesn't really have to do much as my solar system is also charging the batteries and does a great job of keeping them topped up. So I use the Intelipower exclusively as a battery charger for when off grid and charging with my generator. If my OEM converter ever fails I could always run an AC power line to the Intelipower from the RV power distribution panel.

    Ray I noticed that one of your DC fuses is a red 10 amp and I'm almost 100% sure that they all should have a blue 15 amp one in every circuit. Obviously someone in the past got lazy and replaced it with the wrong one. In my 2015 trailer they all are 15 amp except for the last one which is a 1 amp (which I believe is for the LP detector).

    Question for you: At 2:25 min on the video timeline you point to that lower big black wire on the D.C. distribution side, and say, "Down here, this black wire, that's the one goin' off to my batteries, to charge my batteries . . . " WHY IS THAT WIRE BLACK instead of red right there??? It is connected to the post labeled: "POS+" on the 8955 WFCO -- I know, because I, too, have an 8955 and have it all wired up, unsure of where that last 8 ga. black wire connects. For background, I am doing a changeout of the old MagnaTek converter/charger in my 1988 Winnebago LeSharo RV. Did some RV manufacturers use large gauge black wire instead of red wire for the charging output to the house battery???

  • @LoveYourRV

    @LoveYourRV

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, RV manufactures commonly mix color codes. Many are using white for the negative/grounds and black or white with a color stripe for the +12V wires. I guess they are sort of using the AC code of black is the hot wire. It quite weird but that's they way they do it. Then in some places I've seen them revert to the automotive/marine standard of red for + and black for - Best thing on an RV is don't trust any colors, always test it. Here is a post about it with various color codes used - www.rv-project.com/resources/wirecodes.php

    As usual another nice & helpful video Ray. Funny, I just pulled mine out on our new rig just to take a peek. You mentioned some people and yourself, replacing the converter with the 60 Amp Intelli Power. I am curious as it sounds like a good idea, but wondering since many rigs come with a 45 Amp converter, aren't the wires installed by the Mfg. sized for 45 Amp? I would be concerned installing a higher amp converter might be too much for the wiring already in place. Curious what your thoughts are.

  • @LoveYourRV

    @LoveYourRV

    7 жыл бұрын

    If I were upping my current output dramatically, I'd at the same time up my wire gauge. My rig had a 55 amp converter, and they used 6 gauge which should handle a 60 amp unit. The best way to upgrade though in my mind is to move the converter next to the batteries and run an AC line back to the power center. That way the long wire run is over 120 VAC rather than the DC cabling. The problem with the long string of DC cable is it can have enough voltage drop to trick the smart charging circuitry of the converter into thinking the batteries are more charged than they are. In my rig, this led to the batteries never seeing 14.4 bulk charging, worse when I started adding more batteries. Of course, a person could swap out the 6 GA for say 2/0 heavy cables but that would get expensive. Another thing to keep in mind is each battery can only take so much current I think the rule of thumb is around 15 amps, so sometimes having a larger charger doesn't do much. Also get too large of a converter, and a smaller generator can have a hard time firing up. I find 60 amps is a good size for my 4 golf cart batteries and runs well off of my 2000W genny.

    So, just to clarify, you kept the original convertor and installed a new, upgraded one, forward, near your batteries? Thereby having 2 convertors? That's okay? I don't know, that's why I'm asking. I'm doing a major reno job on a 02 Jazz. My plan was that while I have access to the hall wall by the bathroom, I would place a large conduit next to the vent pipe housed there. Then place a junction box on the roof, for the future. i.e. Solar or antennas The bottom of that pipe would land in the basement. After my current reno is done, one of my next projects was to upgrade the supply, convertor and rid myself of the old reel electrical cord, too. But, if I can leave that convertor and just add one to the battery bay when I upgrade to solar. I'd rather do that. Also, with your electrical background, would you replace all receptacles with GFC's? Mostly for proximity reasons, I'm thinking. Anyway, would appreciate the feedback.

    Yes, they are separate, I installed a separate input receptacle at the front of the RV for generator to plug into to recharge my battery bank via the InteliPower charger when needed, normally we get our charging power from the solar array but when the sun doesn't shine the generator is used. When on full hookups I just let the OEM converter work alongside the solar charger. May as well wear it out versus my InteliPower unit.

    Ray, I have the WF-9855 converter. I don't know what the difference is, but mine is brand new and does 3 stage charging. Bulk, Absorption, and Float. Does the 8955 do that? I also noted that it looks like you added a 12 volt circuit in there? I have done the same. There were two vacant spots on mine. I am using a 3 amp circuit to feed a UV water system. Great video! Oops, correction! I see that the WF-8955 is the whole power centre, and the WF-9855 is a deck mount converter. So, we have the same unit!

  • @LoveYourRV

    @LoveYourRV

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sure, there is the cable leading from the battery bank to the RVs 12V distribution panel, so since the IntelliPower is connected to the batteries it's also capable of feeding the 12V distribution. Just like when you are unhooked from shore power your batteries provide power to all the 12V stuff in the RV Basically just think of my InteliPower as a fancy battery charger I'm using with my generator. To get the maximum charge amperage I located it next to the batteries to reduce wire losses and voltage drop. If I wanted to turf the OEM WFCO converter I could simply remove it and run an AC power line to where the InteliPower is located and it would also be my shore power charger, but like I said I prefer to wear out the OEM converter doing that job as all it really does is sit there trickle charging for the most part anyway. So if it someday packs it in I'll do that.

    Here are two links to the WFCO power distribution center and the Inteli-Power PD9200 power converter: wfcoelectronics.com/product/wf-8955-55-amp/ www.progressivedyn.com/rv/power-converters/pd9200-series-rv-power-converters/ Manuals for both can be downloaded at these sites. I would not worry too much about the length of the wire to the battery - the total resistance of your 4 AWG wire is only 0.01 ohm. If they are being charged at a 10 A rate, this is just a 0.1 V drop. And as the batteries near their end point voltage the charge current will drop and the voltage drop will become negligible.

    Hi Tom. My stock charge converter location uses around 25 feet of 6AWG wire plus a frame negative return path. I mounted my Intelipower PD9260 right next to the batteries and have compared the two. I get much better charging with the closely mounted Intelipower translating into much less generator run time when boondocking. Here is the install - www.loveyourrv.com/installing-the-inteli-power-pd9260-for-improved-rv-battery-charging/ Here is an example of how I use it in the real world. - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqSslcmIdLi2gJc.html I still use the OEM WFCO when on hookups as my solar takes care of most of the battery charging and the charge converter is usually just in float mode, so may as well wear it out as opposed to my expensive Intelipower. Ray, thanks so much for the excellent video. I know I am late to the party but this info is just what I need. I recently installed a lithium 100ah battery. I have the same converter as you. The company rep told me my charger will work with lithium but not designed for it. WFCO does have a bottom section that is designed for lithium and I can get it, at a cost of $285 plus install from a local RV specialist. Since I run a Renogy 100 AH solar charger designed for lithium and a stand alone battery charger also designed for lithium, I am not sue I need to go to the extra expense. With the Relion lithium battery came a battery monitor with shunt. It has been suggested that I install the shunt to the Controller. Any ideas about this . I am a little confused as to where the DC load pole would conect to the shunt as well as the DC cable that goes to the battery. Any help would be appreciated. Mark

    I've just left my OEM WFCO the way it is for use hooked to shore power and use solar and a second better quality converter located beside the batteries to charge with, usually, it's with the generator when off-grid. I've found the WFCO won't even charge the lithium much. Tends to drop into float and just maintains the charge. You want to install the shunt between the battery bank negative feed and all the negative loads. That way it can measure all the current going in and out of the battery bank and calculate a state of charge in percentage. Cheers, Ray.

    The WFCO converter converts the AC shore power into DC power to charge the batteries which power the RVs 12 volt circuits. It's often referred to as a charge converter or converter charger. An inverter is what converts DC battery power into AC power. And lately, RV companies have been installing a device called an inverter charger which basically is a combo of the two. At his point, you are going to have to get a multimeter and a schematic of the AC heating cooling system and start to make voltage measurements and see what circuit is a fault. Try to find the service manual online for the AC unit and follow its troubleshooting steps. If that is beyond your comfort zone then an RV tech needs to be called in. Cheers Ray
