Dude, there's SOOO many! It's so subjective, but it's worth checking out, especially for movies that didn't quite hit the mark!

Interesting mr 42! Still havn't tried watching any fan edits but should think of some favorite movies that I know back to back and try it some day. You are the best, mr 42!!

To me, fan-edits are best when there are movies that just don’t quite get there. But then again, there are some really fun transformative type ones, like the Star Wars/Heavy Metal one I watched. Give them a shot!

@order42show oh!! That’s right! I did actually watch that Heavy Metal edit after your review. It was so great! Will probably look for other similar edits and would for sure be fun to do an edit someday. Have you done any fan edits?

I have not - but I’m also a bit of a purist, I guess. It’s tough for me to think of changing another artist’s vision, but then again…some of the fan-edits seem better than the original, so…

I like to mix and match with the hobbit films + edits... original Unexpected Journey, then original Desolation up to meeting Bard as a film, then maples fanedit for the final. Maples edit of that second half the journey is the best fanedit for me. Would love to see a bouncing children's book 2 hour edit of it all some day though.

Wow, that seems like a lot! I guess I just don't enjoy the films enough to want to worry about mixing or matching - but good for you! They're just so subjective that I don't know if anyone could come up with the best for everyone.

I don’t know - I think the shortest one I’ve seen was 4 hours. But, again - you can’t just cut stuff, it has to make sense. This was written to be 9 hours, so I think there’s only so much you can do; otherwise, it’d be unintelligible (probably).

I mean...while there are a lot of things where I agree were done better there...it's not exactly book accurate, either. But hey - it's all subjective!

While the concensus of fan edits to try and save a film's story is prevalent, there was a time when The Hobbit and the Star Wars Prequels (NOT the Sequels, those are unwatchable IMO) were viewed in a similar lens. Its neat to see how creative and innovative fans can be the material, and I think it shows what can and cannot be salvaged. Certainly don't blame you for feeling burned out from watching fan edits of this film series. But I have a feeling you will never review the Chris Hartwell cut, since it retains a great deal of the battle, the white council and side characters like Tauriel. What I enjoy about them is that they rearrange crucial parts of the story to present a version that could have worked better than the official releases. Also, I do like Tauriel and Radagast!

You know, this comment comes at an interesting time. They just announced more Middle-Earth stories with Gollum. Tolkien wanted to inspire people, but it’d be really interesting to see what he’d think about all the additions to Middle-Earth that Jackson made (Tauriel, for one) and the idea that they’ll expand it even further (new Rohirrim anime late ‘24 and this new Gollum movie(s)). I’m just…man, I don’t like The Hobbit movies that much, and there’s only so much you can do with them. Add on top of that there’s SO many fan-edits and I’ve already reviewed so many. AND, fan-edits are so subjective anyway, so reviewing them on my channel ends up being more promotional than anything. It may be that I need to do a video stating those concerns…

@@order42show The thing with Tolkien is that while he obviously enjoyed developing and writing Middle-earth lore to explore his own passion for languages, he was still able to detatch himself from his creation and not get caught up in the fan fervour of the 60s. Its hard to imagine him engaging with modern LotR fandom and its most popular form in the original trilogy. If nothing else, I think he would greatly appreciate the use of his languages in Howard Shore's music. I'm sorry dude, I didn't mean to bring up Chris's cuts of The Hobbit to bring down your mood. Ultimately, as a fan of Middle-earth I want to latch onto the best versions of these depictions of MIddle earth, be they in film or video game form, and that comes with a lot of passion and trying to share that with people.

No, no, you didn’t bring me down! Its actually kind of the same thing with Star Wars now - we all know where the problems lie, but without a significant rewrite of multiple movies and reshoots (which will never happen), the only thing you can really do is move things around or cut things out. But if you’ve found that passion, keep it going, and don’t let an old cynical codger like me stop you from enjoying or sharing that passion!

Radagast is cool, but Tauriel…I think Evangeline is great, so I was rooting for her, but I just thought it complicated a story that didn’t need complicating…and it just seemed like a weird choice. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@order42show I would definitely cut the "why does it hurt?/Because it was real" type of lines, but she is a fun character and I would keep most of the scenes that weren't too cheesy. I definitely prefer her (and Radagast) over forcing Galadriel and Saruman into the movies. Edit: I actually like the "I could have anything down my trousers/or nothing" scene. Even just keeping Tauriel around just long enough for that scene, would make her an interesting minor character, imo.

I get what you’re saying. She’s not a terrible character, but because I know the book so well, it just feels like all the extra stuff that didn’t come from Tolkien slows the story down so much. 🤷🏻‍♂️
