    I have been a coding for over 25 years. I have a Bachelor degree in Health Information Management (RHIA), CCS and CPC. Yes, coding can make $100,000 or more a year, but they are usually inpatient coders, auditors or CDI coders with over 15 years experience with college degrees. They are RHIA, RHIT, RN or some other bachelor degree. Hope this helps those who are over there.

    You are exactly right. It's possible to make the 6 figures but you need to be specialized and have at least 5 years of experience and in a state that pays well for this field. I reached 6 figures after 8 years and have RHIA, CCS and most recently the CCDS, have done DRG validation and now work as CDI. Even I have difficulty finding jobs in CDI without the RN 😐

    I am an inpatient coder in Florida, 2 certifications and over 12 years experience. All the coders I know that have similar backgrounds as me, or more experience- none of us have ever made 6 figures without working 2 jobs. A lot of people get into this field thinking they are gonna make tons of money. While coding does pay more than minimum wage, all the deductions (insurance, taxes, etc) that come out of your pay hit hard.

    You definitely CAN make 6 figures in this field I personally know Coders who have two remote full time jobs it’s doable and make 8K to 10K monthly if they do it for the entire year that’s definitely 6 figures. Edit Coders have it easy so imagine 2 full time jobs both at $25 hourly

    You don't need a degree to get into medical coding, but you definitely need schooling, it is a lot to learn, I went to coding school (technical school) and then got certified, I got my first coding job before getting my certification, half coding/half medical records clerk, and then I gained the working experience while I was getting ready to seat for my exam, everyone story it's different but it takes time to get the first coding job, it could be a bumpy road, low wages and maybe not the ideal job, but overtime you will get better opportunities, you just have to be patience and maybe take what you don't like too much at first and work your way up, after that, the sky is the limit, now after 6 years I am working at my dream job😍.

    There's great refresher courses that are available through AAPC local chapters for those preparing for the CPC exam. I would suggest getting your membership with the AAPC (or AHIMA if you want to do inpatient/facility) and looking for a prep course. There's even some instructors that offer prep courses like CCO.us, Ohana coding, and I think Integrity Coding offers them as well.

    Is the job hard to get into once you graduate? I keep hearing mixed reviews that it's next to impossible to get into after completing the program in 2 years because most places want a bachelors or 4 years experience. Do you know if this is true?

  • @ContempoCoding

    @ContempoCoding

    It is a bit hard to get a job. I think some of the issue, though, is that the market is saturated with coders that only took a course focused on passing the exam, not becoming a marketable and well-rounded coder. So there's a lot of shortcut exam-passers that can't find a job. There's also a lot of coders that want to ONLY get a job in coding, and aren't willing to start in billing or pre-authorization and work their way up. And honestly, I have barely seen any employers requiring an associate's degree, let along a bachelors. Bachelor's degrees are more for management or maybe higher level compliance positions. Most employers are really looking for the certification either through AAPC or AHIMA for a coding position.

    As a contract inpatient coder my pay was $38 per hour. Contract coding pays a little more than if you work local. However, if the hospital you’re contracted to doesn’t need you anymore you can be out of work without any warning. I’m laid off right now because of Covid 19. After coding for over 20 years, I am enjoying the break until things pick back up. I have a cousin who codes as well. She may be close to 6 figures, but she codes for two companies which means she codes from sun up to sun down.

    I think it's a great time. Because of medical coding normally being a "remote" job, more employers are taking a hard look at pushing more of the jobs to be remote. The CPC exam is also currently the only medical coding certification that you can take fully online, so you don't even have to worry about going to a testing site if you don't want to. I've actually seen a couple postings lately starting to have more leniency with the experience requirements.

    I had to get surgery on my shoulder was told no more construction work. The Mrs went to school and got cpc granted we live in Washington state so wages are a bit better. She started at 22 coding and billing then 3 months later 26 coding radiology a year later at $28 and 6 months later is coding manager at $35. The hard part is company is very against over time. She gets to work remote we bought a house in part of the state that didn't have ridiculous prices and we're doing amazing.

  • @ContempoCoding

    A lot of times if you know the prefixes and suffixes you can piece it together. If there's anything in particular you have trouble remembering, you can write it in your book and tab the page for reference when you sit for your certification exam. There's a really cool anatomy and physiology course on KZread that I LOVE from Crash Course you can check out that can help in that general arena, too. kzread.info/head/PL8dPuuaLjXtOAKed_MxxWBNaPno5h3Zs8

    I got a coding certificate in 2018 and I’m now working on a billing certificate. I currently work as a cook and I’m struggling to make the transition to a medical office position. I have some office assistant volunteer experience so I know the basics. I think a lot of my experience as a cook would transfer well to being in a medical office position, like time management, problem solving, identifying priorities, changing priorities, etc. But I feel like they look at my resume and see I’ve been a cook for ten years and immediately toss it in the trash. I do want to get certified but I want to finish my billing certificate first. I know since I don’t have a lot of experience I will most likely have to take a lower position and work my way up. That’s fine. I just can’t seem to get my foot in the door anywhere.
