How I Made Six Figures in the Medical Coding Industry

It is possible to make over $100,000 a year in the medical coding field. I know plenty of seasoned coders in DRG validation, auditing, revenue cycle senior management, consulting, education, and high-dollar specialties that earn over six figures annually. It's not going to be easy, and it will take time to develop into that level, but it IS possible.
Here's how I went from broke to owning a six-figure business.

Your story is exactly mine. If you're willing to put in the work you can make a 6 figure salary in this field. Single mother of 3, no child support, abusive relationships, college dropout with a semester to go, living in subsidized housing on food stamps, no car, and now making 6 figures and own my own 6 bedroom home with multiple cars and youngest graduating high school... lots of doors will be closed on you because you don't have a degree, but if you keep pushing forward, get your certifications, and get experience you really can have a lucrative career. Prove your worth. Degrees aren't everything. And most definitely KNOW your worth and only compromise if the end justifies the means.

great story! I just met a 40 year old who was living out of her mother's home saying that she spent her "most important" years in India serving a guru, so she got no education other than some Indian astrology. I suggested medical coding to her as a way to get fast cheap education and earn decent living in a fast growing industry, but she said she doesn't like computers... So, I guess, in this country, in this economy, if one is able and healthy, anyone can succeed - and if one is making excuses rather than building a career, it's their own fault and no one else's. Good luck to you and your kids!

I'm just starting schooling for medical billing and coding, pregnant with my first child, and ended up switching gears to this industry so that I could work remotely and take care of the baby. I initially was going to go into the field of nursing, but working from home has its advantages and if I can make 6 figures eventually like you say that I can, I may just end up staying in this field and working towards it! Thanks for the motivation!

I’m so glad you’re seeing rewards for all your hard work. You deserve it!! Could you talk about CDI as a career, in particular the various schools and how it differs from auditing? Your experience, if any, with CDI, etc

You're nailing all of the camera presence and knowledge. I am about to take my CPC exam after receiving my certification from university of cincinnati in 10 days. Anything throughout the year that I have had trouble with, you have advice for. You make things so much easier to understand. You are an inspiration, and it is great to hear about your life and family! You give us hope. Your hard work is admirable! Keep calm and code on Victoria!

I appreciate your comment. I live in Dayton Ohio and I am considering University of Cincinnati. They have a degree program called Health Information Management. Do you think a certificate is enough or do you plan to further your education. Sinclair Community College has a 2 year program. I’m just trying to get a feel for schools and programs.

Good content. I have my bachelors in health information, but I think my certifications have helped more. Money is great. For newbies, it can be overwhelming but just stick with it, it gets so much better

Thank you very much for such honesty and bravery!! Your story really speaks to me as my story is similar, I’m not as accomplished as you and not very outgoing or able to be in management positions, but I hope to get to a point where I am not wondering if I can afford food this month. I agree that money should be spent making memories instead of acquiring the latest phone or the new furniture or car, etc. my son is 18 , and will be graduating high school soon, I am currently at an entry level “compliance coder” position and have been here 3 and some years. I have not invested time into my career as I am putting everything I can into my son while he is in school, I’m a young mom so I figure one he is done school I will start getting my education again. I am looking into furthering to a BA because I can get loans and reimbursed from my job, whereas for the certificates there is no class and if I do find a program is is several hundred dollars oop and I can’t afford it. But again, your struggles are like my own I pray you are having a wonderful time with your family-- and enjoy our Florida weather!!! I’m in Tampa;) God bless

I admire this so much! Thank you for being so transparent. We have some similarities. I have a young 20's daughter on the spectrum, however, being a military spouse has made my career choices difficult. I am thankful that coding will provide opportunities for remote working and flexibility which is what brought me here. I began years ago as a biller. Excited for the opportunities and additional certifications. Thank you for sharing info

Awwww, you definitely have a testimony! I struggled so much with what I want to do with my life and truly feel medical billing/coding is the career for me. I am entrepreneur-minded, but my motivation and hustle is lacking and need to make myself more accountable. Also, I passed my CPC exam on the first try last month and so excited. I'm currently a medical biller and looking for part-time coding work, so your videos are really coming in handy! I will be on the lookout for your second channel!

Very impressive Victoria. Thank you for sharing such REAL LIFE experiences with us about what it means to succeed in this business. You made a lot of sense. I can relate to how hard you hustled those jobs! I have done that in other fields of work. So now I am a widow at 60 starting my financial life over.I took the AAPC Live Course and sat for the Certification Exam (failed). I have a long way to go and I am learning how I have to fight for this education and will have to fight for the job I want. It is all new to me so my vision is slow in coming but I am excited and this show confirms what I have already experienced. Hope EPCOT vacation was AWESOME!
