Sirhan Sirhan | Mental Health & Personality

This video answers the questions: Can I discuss the mental health and personality factors in the case of Sirhan Sirhan, the man who assassinated Robert Kennedy? Why did the “second shooter” conspiracy theory develop?

This video is going to the list of “my favorite Dr. Grande’s videos.” Three excellent points you made: 1- At times scientists need to understand the limits of science, it’s impossible to have all the answers. 2- When events are too great our tendency is to find the purpose/reason behind it, but sometimes there is just no meaning to be explored. 3- Even if one could determine the motive of this crime the outcome wouldn’t change. He would still need to obey his sentence. Thank you for another wonderful video Dr. Grande!❤️

This observation fascinated me, particularly where Dr. Grande discusses how quickly people will look for a conspiracy theory to explain the unexplainable; rather than accept the fact that a senseless crime is just that, a senseless crime. Grasping at denial with a fantasy is an easier coping mechanism for many, rather than facing and accepting the sad truth.

This ' trying to find a fantastical explanation to fit a unremarkable crime' is the new go to for normies. It allows them to get back in their cocoon and feel all safe and warm again. Just look at evidence and facts and stop trying to philosophise things to fit your narratives. IF there was a gunshot in the back of his head then I'm sorry, then he didn't do it alone. You can't philosophise that.

I've been thinking about the differences between psychologists in therapeutic and forensic settings and the applications of their abilities. It's interesting how in many cases I've watched you cover there will be psychology experts called in to give their opinions and often times the diagnoses and mental health assessments will range. Makes me wonder about actual accuracy of diagnoses and conclusions especially those made by forensic psychologists making their analyses in criminal court settings. Anyways just wanted to say I love your videos, it always feels like a fun class I'm taking on the side beyond my normal psychology studies! 😁 Have a wonderful day Dr.

Although the Kennedy era was before my time, I do understand the immense grief felt by those who supported RFK and believed in his vision for the future. Months earlier, they had lost MLK and then shortly thereafter RFK who was an advocate for civil rights and a beacon of hope for so many. It was definitely a pivotal point in history and it must have felt like a crushing blow to lose him. It's unfortunate there are a number of conspiracy theories that remain surrounding his death. It was interesting to learn of the conflicting diagnoses given to SS by the MH professionals. I wonder if it was challenging because of their reliance on SS's cooperation and him providing accurate information so they could make a definitive diagnosis. I have to wonder if culture was another factor. Anyway, thanks for your very insightful analysis and conclusions-there were many lessons here!

Sirhan went by just one name most of his life. Someone (possibly a cop) asked, "What's your name?" "Sirhan." "Sirhan what?" "Sirhan Sirhan!" From then on, people called him Sirhan Sirhan. But he was really just Sirhan.

Can you analyze the recent case of Joel Guy Jr.? He murdered his parents in an extremely gruesome and callous way for an almost unbelievably immature reason. His behavior during the trial was chilling, and the idea that he would even consider going to trial is in itself a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

I would be interested to hear your opinion on the potential impact the head injury you said he sustained, preventing him from being a jockey any longer, had on his overall mental health. I think, sometimes, head injuries and the resulting mental health issues from them can be somewhat overlooked. I’m not in any way saying he didn’t do it or that he was NG due to insanity...but the head injury thing nags at me as to what may have been a contributing factor to committing this horrible murder. Excellent analysis, again, thanks, Dr. Grande.

Juan Romero might be worth a video on his own, he passed away a few years ago. Apparently he struggled for years with guilt that if Senator Kennedy hadn't stopped to shake his hand, he would still be alive - even though he was the one who put a coat under the Senator's head and gave him a rosary before he was taken to the hospital.

If a trial were held today, you could guarantee the head injury he suffered while apprenticing to be a jockey would be front and center. As a lifelong equestrian I've learned if you get on a horse voluntarily, you are sometimes getting off the horse involuntarily. If he had a series of concussions, I'm sure his attorneys (if the case were tried today) would use the defense of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), or failing that, would use TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from the one head injury we know of as a defense. I wonder if his family, in particular his brother, noticed any changes in personality, etc. after the injury. I do agree with you, that being kept in custody was the correct thing to do and not to approve parole.

Bobby Kennedy was the only one that would have forgiven him and he killed him. We sure were robbed of the best president to be ever. America was robbed of this great man. "To tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world." That was Bobby Kennedy when he gave his historical speech on the death of MLK. And he gave due credit to where he quoted that from. I loved that man.

Great job Dr. Grande (particularly your discussion of the conspiracy theory!) What I wonder is what would Sirhan’s life be like if he had been paroled (some 50 years after the crime.) How do long-term, one-offence prisoners fare in society after so much time away? Would release be good or bad for him? Is he a danger to re-offend? What does say about prison as a tool of reform? There are many questions. He would seem to be the prototype for study but it doesn’t look like he is going to make it out. Oh well, food for thought. Suggested future topics: Socrates

Dr. Grande, could you do an analysis on the fictional character "Michael Scofield" from Prison Break? He has been clinically diagnosed with low latent inhibition, a condition in which his brain is more open to incoming stimuli in the surrounding environment. As a result of this condition, he is unable to block out periphery information and instead processes every aspect and detail of any given stimulus. And he was very intelligent, highly empathetic and loyal and had an insane eye for detail, also considered a genius in the series. After some seasons he becomes more paranoid... so, if possible, I would love to hear your thoughts!
