Also, a person's voice is constantly changing and shifting as they age and grow, so a tot with a squeaky voice could grow into a singer who has a velvet voice like Elvis did. I know opera singers whose voices in their 30s are still shifting and settling in as they continue to work with vocal coaches. No, no. As someone who had a teacher tell me I can't be on her choir, let me tell you why I was rejected. In those early years, she could hear that be breathing ability was immature and my neck was too thick for my tongue position to allow any kind of musical notes worthy of listening to come out. Also, I was shy and couldn't project well back then. To this day, my husband refuses to allow me to sing anywhere. It's not the worst, but it's also not the best. It's nothing the man who loves me most in this world can stand to listen to. I love him for his honestly, but it's nothing I haven't heard before. And the breathing problem also meant my dream of playing the flute was out of the question. I was 23 when my allergist told me I have asthma. Asthma + thick neck = no singing voice for me. I am, naturally gutted, but whatever. I'll live.

Yup! Finally was conned into going to my 15th High School reunion, there sat the vice-principal who screamed in my face I'd amount to nothing. A double major in Child Development and French later furthering my career as a professional Nanny proved him wrong and I made sure to let him know that spitting in his proverbial face while making the Dean's list, holding down a full time job in my career field while being a wife and (bio & foster) mum was ALL down to ME cuz he didn't give me shit, except a reason to hate Authority : ) LOL good thing I now raise children professionally for a living!

@@blowitoutyourcunt7675 Teachers evidently tell students that a lot. I've heard it from teachers and a lot of people I know from many different places in the U.S. have been told the same. I think most teachers that say things like that are hoping to use that teenage rebellion as motivation because all the people I know had feelings of Hell will freeze over before I let you be right and went on to do what they love and be what they feel like is successful in life. It's still a cruel thing to say to a child because no one knows what they might be going thru. What if they're raised by parent(s) who tell them and treat them like they're nothing but a waste of space and oxygen on the daily? What if they're struggling with depression or other mental illness? What if they've been forced to deal with adult problems like bills and so forth due to a parent being ill with some debilitating disease like cancer, and they've got to get a job to help out or raise the younger siblings? A teacher can't guarantee that those words will motivate every child. It could confirm in a child's mind that they're useless, worthless, and stupid. I truly hope that teachers today use encouragement to motivate instead of cruel insults.

@@staceye2851 you keep singing. It’s good for your breath! I have asthma and the singing has helped! My long phrases have become easier. And hogwash about a short neck! And maybe your husband just doesn’t care for a trained voice? Not every trained opera singer with a fabulous voice might be able to make a living as singer or have a professional career. But that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t sing.

Another very interesting video, Dr Grande. My father was in the army with Elvis. (I have a couple autographed pictures of them together. My mom and dad were only dating at that time and she had a little crush on Elvis and convinced my dad to get her a pic haha). My father said he liked hanging around Elvis because none of the superiors would ever ask him to do any of the really difficult work, so if you were hanging out with him you usually didn’t get picked on too badly. My father also said Elvis was a quiet guy who really hated his life. Everyone wanted him to be something he wasn’t because so many people wanted to make money off him. Anyway, my dad was invited to Graceland for a big party when they returned from Germany but my father chose not to go because he missed his gf, my mom, so much and couldn’t wait to see her. My parents were married over 50 years so I guess he made the right decision ;) We were on vacation on Hilton Head Island when we heard the news of Elvis’ death; my father was extremely depressed to hear that. My dad always talked highly of Elvis and said he was a very nice person. He just felt sorry for him since he was living a life he didn’t want to live and was constantly being told what to do and who to be.

Very interesting. I keep hearing that about fame. Most celebrities sign contracts and they invest in that person to the point they are 'owned'. A very misreble life. Its crazy how Hollywood and the music industry portray it to be a glamorous life to get shallow ppl to envy them. When it's nothing more then modern day slavery. You're dad sounds pretty cool tho.

Maybe his unhappiness was one reason he didn't fight being drafted into the regular service. It was kind of a break from everything.

Elvis did not have the personality to resist the excesses of fame however the same personality gave him the ability to bring every human emotion to his songs. For me he was the greatest artist of the 20th century.

Elvis was a constant presence in my home when I was little through the music. Both my parents loved his music, and my dad particularly. Dad met him way before I was born, back in the Louisiana Hayride days. My dad was drumming in a band on the same bill as Elvis, always said he was a super nice guy, one of the nicest he'd ever met. I saw my dad cry when Elvis died.

My aunt went to an Elvis concert when she was about 8 months pregnant. While hurrying to the stage Elvis accidently knocked her down. She would tell us how he was so distraught over knocking down a heavily pregnant woman. He apologized repeatedly and was extremely kind to her that night. After that she would drag us to the drive in theater every time there was an Elvis movie showing!

Elvis was kind to everyone and his generosity was legendary and genuine There was nothing phony about Elvis. When interviewing many of his co-stars, they all said the same thing "he was a gentleman at all times". He was a product of his upbringing. While he may have had very young fans, he was not intimate with them and treated them with respect. Let he who is without faults cast the first stone. Elvis was not perfect and never claimed to be, however, his humanity and kindness to others far outweighed his faults. He put too much faith in his doctors and manager rather than take better control over his health issues and career. .

I think Elvis suffered from extreme people-pleasing. That explains why he wasn't able to disengage from Colonel Parker, why he took criticism so hard, and why he gave so many gifts. It's also what made him such a terrific performer - he had an uncanny ability to connect with people on an emotional level and a desire to make them happy. He searched all his life for answers to questions such as, "Why did I live and my brother Jesse died?", "Why did God bless me with this voice and what does he expect from me in return?", "What does it mean to be a good person?", and "Am I a good person?". The answer he settled on was that he was put on Earth to make other people happy.

Sensitive people are easily taken advantage of, as Elvis was. I believe the early life trauma of vernon being taken to prison and also his inability to keep a job made Elvis feel that he needed to be the provider for his whole family.

I agree. I'm currently reading Being Elvis: A Lonely Life and he got to a point where he only did concerts, so that he can get paid large sums of money, and then buy everyone cars. It's like he was addicted to the feeling one gets from the reaction of others, which falls into the people pleasing factor.

Losing his twin at birth would have been psychologically damaging. Even a newborn experiences extreme loss. Adopted newborns suffer separation anxiety when taken from the birth mother. So I know it’s real and very well could have affected his ability to ‘let go’ and caused some depression and neediness. I feel sad for him and his struggle. It was a silent one, makes me cry. I can relate. Sad about his baby girl. Just a shitty ending to such a special man’s life. I’m going to not say what I think about Priscilla, except I think she was more jealous of her daughter than LOVE for her. Ok. And Priss-cilla looks like a freak clown 🤡 (there, I said it)!!! She’s not right in the head on her own.

Elvis Presley was a sensitive, compassionate and very spiritual man. He wrote checks for hundred of thousands of dollars in payment of medical bills of chronically and terminally ill children. In addition to grief over his mother's death, he suffered from survivor's guilt regarding the death of his twin, Jesse, labeling himself the "bad twin." There will never be another like him.

I know 2 very old guys (mid 80’s today) in Beverly Hills that played pick-up football games with Elvis at the park. They both said he was the nicest, warmest and down to earth guy they ever met(they both said the same thing to me at the same time) the football game lasted for about a year. He had a couple busy guards but would let anyone into the game. Pretty cool story

Elvis was a great man and a great American. Were he a young performer today, I have no doubt that he would not abuse drugs or girls. Elvis loved his mother and loved America, and loved his friends and acquaintances too. No one was more deserving of artistic and financial success than Elvis Presley.

It’s very well documented that early life trauma is associated with poor sleep as an adult. This was indeed highlighted in your excellent video on the life of Marilyn Monroe. The more severe the trauma (ACE score), the greater extent of poor sleep. The Michael Jackson story is a tragic case of someone who had insomnia so severe that he resorted to taking an anesthetic drug to cope with it.

Dr. Grande, I wondered what you thought about Priscilla's account that Elvis was not interested in sex with her after the birth of Lisa Marie. People speculated that it was an Oedipus Complex consistent with his deep affection for his mother. Also, Elvis never considered his behavior as illicit drug abuse. He actually started taking over-the-counter stimulants back in the day with Johnny Cash. They would perform at fairs/festivals during the day and drive to the next show all night. He repeatedly reminded Priscilla and Linda Thompson, that his pills were prescribed. As they say, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt." I've watched lots of footage of Elvis's last concerts. He couldn't move very well because of his weight. However, I never heard him miss a key. Priscilla and Linda both said that Elvis was a good man. He grew up in extreme poverty and was one of only four families that lived in a segregated black neighborhood in Mississippi. There are many accounts from childhood friends, preachers, and celebrities who verify that Elvis always stood up for the black community. Nobody had ever literally had their clothes torn off their back. He once was asked if he resented his fans for this. He responded, "No Sir, my fans put my shirt on my back in the first place." He was the first megastar. He may have not handled it well, but he may have handled it better than anyone could have.

He received pain killers from the Dentist. I believe that was enough to push him over edge. He had a strong sense of duty to take care of his employees. He was grateful to his fans. The movies were musical romance fantasies. A well-known psychologist once said, "Fantasy is a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.'"

People need to know when talking about Elvis that the role that he played for not only music history and music industry but for all of modern pop culture as we know it today boils down to his person. There was nothing and nobody like him before, he paved the path for all to come after him. Sure, there were Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra but they are not comparable.. just watch Elvis and Frank on the Ed Sullivan Show and it will be clear. Almost every band or singer quotes Elvis as their influence. He opened the doors for black musicians. And as Lennon said, before Elvis, there was nothing. And that was not just a joke or an ironic exageration - ask any historian of modern music, they will confirm. And I say all that and am not even a diehard Elvis fan but I just love music and its history. Now, with all this superhuman fame came lots of problems. And there were no Betty Ford Clinics or similar at the time when Elvis needed it the most - those came after his death. It’s a a pity he died so young but I feel that particularly gifted people burn themselves out much to fast.

Well stated. His good looks, talent and giving all of himself to his fans had a high price. He was a phenomena, the likes of which will probably never be seen again. I mean who else could ever make an entire sold out convert scream and cry? Not even Frank Sinatra. And he never lost his voice. What a beautiful man and in his prime he was the best looking man alive.

As a child, he would go to Black churches to listen to the music. James Brown and many other Black musicians loved Elvis and have spoken about how he helped them to break down racial walls. Elvis was in charge of hardened men. At times, he had to act "strong" to put them in line. Elvis, was ahead of his time, he was generous to a fault, a religious man, he did not feel that his wealth should be all for himself, therefore he gave away so many things to make people happy, as Elvis came from a poor background. I’m 56 and prior to the Baz movie I knew my mother had a crush on Elvis when she was a teen, and I knew of a sweaty old guy who wore capes and kissed everybody from the stage. Such a deep, horrific disservice the media and yellow journalists did to this man. My son had a stinker for a teacher once that told him in 87, when he wrote a paper on Virtual reality ,that he should stop watching Startrek & get with reality because there will never be no virtual reality.🤗 He went on to get a double PhD & now Manages a team Engineers from 30 countries who take care of satilights . So if you are a teacher never underestimate your students. Parents let your children work towards their dreams & help them to find out what they need to do to get there.

There are a few inaccuracies here: Elvis NEVER weighed anywhere near 350 lbs. 255 was his heaviest. Also, Elvis did co-write a couple of songs. And, he likely was familiar with amphetamines in 1954-55 when he was touring, long before his mother died.

yeah, this 350 lbs was a mistake somewhere and got repeated over and over again. In his autopsy report the weight of 250 or something was noted. That's just logical thinking: a person of 350 lbs would have the shape of a jellyfish or round ball.

I also believe he was a very good actor in his FIRST movie(s). After that, they only gave him nonsense movies to appear in and the so-called colonel forced his participation due to money in the colonels pocket. What a piece of work Parker was.

I saw him on Ed Sullivan in 1956. He was on The Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey Show before Ed Sullivan, which I also saw. I was 10 years old. We were at my grandmother's, and whatever aunts and uncles were there at the time were just staring open-mouthed and flabbergasted.

remember his appearance on the Steve Allen show...where Allen made him sing his hit "Hound dog" to a hound dog....Allen thinking that it was hilarious...I believe Elvis was humiliated and embarrassed by it

We took the kids to Graceland on spring break of last year and honestly it was my favorite trip we've taken. I found the entire place absolutely fascinating. It's so sad that Elvis battled so many demons and died young.

I went last year and opted for Ultimate VIP Pass to go all out and it was worth every penny. Just make sure you have a good hotel lined up before you go. The Graceland Guest House Hotel shuttles you straight to the exhibit side which then shuttles you across the street to the mansion

There is no doubt his mother's death impacted him deeply and was the beginning of his spiral. She grounded him. She loved him unconditionally, as mothers do. As a lay person, I believe that she is the only person who would have been able to encourage him to seek long-term assistance for his drug addiction, and to have encouraged him to take time out to rest. Elvis inherited heart and health issues from both his parents. Sadly, he was surrounded by many people who took advantage of his success, and failed to look out for his health and well-being, including his manager and medical doctor. Elvis had incredible pressure placed upon him to live up to the image he had created. Sadly, those closest to him, should have worked in collaboration to assist a man who was clearly in pain and spiralling. The death of his mother was a trauma that he never recovered from. He was a young adult when she died. His mother is probably the only person who would have been able to ground him. A loss of a mother, for any young man of his age, would have been devasting. Add the complexites of fame, the pressures entertainment industry, an artist's temperament, and lots of selfish people, is a recipe for a sad ending. We are blessed to have the legacy of his work. A young girl lost her father, and a lifetime of shared experiences.

I've read a lot of books on EP because I think he was probably the most generous & gifted performer that ever lived, he never forgot where he came from, & was humble & respectful to all..unlike today's entertainers who have so much disdain for their fans...In the book Child Bride it was very evident that Priscilla aggressively pursued Elvis, it was no accident that she met him, she worked it, it was planned & contrived..she knew all about him & his love for actress Debra Paget, & Priscilla made sure to look like Debra Paget, just look for yourself, she did a good job...As far as what went on between them only those 2 know...All I know is her parents allowed Priscilla to live at Graceland..& E P was a man of his word its been said...He did not have a thing for under age girls, but Priscilla purposely made herself look older & Elvis was in Germany & lonely & the trap was set...E.P. fell in love with Ann Margaret Later...the only one who was underage was Priscilla, & I can't even fault him for that because she played games.

Absolutely agreed. We all know witnesses said her parents told her she'd be set for life, and as we know..his entourage met her and invited her and a bunch of females to his party in Germany. She said she dressed older to be noticed and for that time and Southerners it was very normal to both marry young. He still didn't touch her until marriage and that speaks volumes. His mom advised him to be careful of the "seasoned" girls who wanted him for his fame and money. So he did like young women as opposed to older and been there done that types. The truth of why Elvis wouldn't touch Priscilla was she had two extramarital affairs, not just Karate guy. Fair and truth, must be said. No matter what, there will never be the likes of one of a kind Elvis Presley, period.

"Tommy Boy" would often loose millions when he gambled and had huge debts. How did "Tommy Boy" pay those debts? He and the Memphis Mob would supply Elvis with pills & send him on another tour. All Elvis wanted to do is take a break and rest. 💔😞

It is said that Elvis wanted to develop as an actor and take on more serious roles. Colonial Tom was completely against this I guess because stupid movies would not bring much scrutiny to Tom’s “share” of the money. I read that Barbra Streisand wanted him to play the role ultimately played by Kris Kristofferson in A Star is Born. Despite Elvis’s interest, they could not get around Col. Tom. Tragic.

You want to know who Elvis was spend some time reading about his Philanthropy!!! Elvis GAVE AWAY 86% of his entire life EARNINGS HE EVER MADE. Elvis Presley (1) was in the HIGHEST tax bracket each year including when the highest tax bracket was 95% (yes, ninety five percent) (2) was afraid of the powers/possible abuses of the IRS (3) did not “deduct/apply for a credit/claim a tax write off(s)” for most of his charitable givings and (4) routinely sent his return into the IRS with a note saying “tell me what, if anything, I owe you”. This fundamental point has been either omitted, or minimized, by far too many “biographers” writing about Elvis Presley but it is a point worth understanding for it goes to the INTENT of Elvis’ charitable endeavors and that was simply…the purity of his heart and his desire to help his fellow man. Having grown up poor, and seeing the importance of growing food and/or having access to individuals who grew their own food and being surrounded by family/friends/fellow church goers equally as poor Elvis learned early on what it meant to receive food/clothes/etc, from others as well as the grace/honor in freely helping out others in need both publicly and privately. The lesson that Elvis left was (among others) that we are all equal in Gods’ eyes and helping those in need is honorable and therefore seeking unnecessary publicity in giving is…unnecessary. No publicity, no tax write off, etc. is what Elvis did and what he believed and when one compares his efforts to those in the “entertainment industry” today there is clearly a vast distinction in intent. While all giving, to those in need, is honorable when one gives SOLELY for the purpose of giving, and derives on monetary benefit (i.e. tax write off), it is deserving of our respect and acknowledgment. Elvis Aron Presley was a pioneer in his charitable endeavors and his deeds are worth aspiring to. None of us are “perfect”, and Elvis certainly was not, but to give unto others is one of the ways that we honor God & Elvis' Memory! GOOGLE HIS CHARITY!! His donations built ST Jude, He has Donated from 1956 thru to present day - $100,000 a year to 55 major charities he funds, he ended the Polio Epidemic, he built and still funds Mid-South burn & Trauma center for the destitute, he donated to the Red Cross for over 500,000 Refugees, paid for & Built the Pearl Harbour memorial in Hawaii, Gave away 300+ Cadillacs, 200+ Homes, I could keep going!

Although I was a young girl on the day of his death, I recall how deeply affected his fan base was and the intense media coverage that followed. In life and in death, he was engulfed by the cult of celebrity. Sadly, his life was another tragic example of the destructive forces of fame. It's heartbreaking when financial gain eclipses the health and wellbeing of a celebrity often leading to a tragic outcome. The excessive amounts of stimulants that are prescribed to perform and sedatives to sleep are not only deeply troubling but often lead to an untimely death. Not to mention, the various substances that are used to cope or escape reality (read: pain). On a lighter note, his talent was undeniable and his music timeless. As always, thank you for another great analysis and the comprehensive overview of his life that gave me a deeper understanding of him!

Elvis did have successful albums and single in the 1970's. The Aloha From Hawaii in 1973 was a huge hit for him, and single from that album. In 1972, Burning Love was a #1 or #2 hit, I can't remember but a big hit for him. Many hits on the 70's. When he died he had Way on Down on the top 40. #18. billboard. He maintain top 40 hits in the 70's. I don't know why you said his music was unsuccessful during the 70's. Not to mentioned he had sold out concerns through out his career that includes his 70's to 77 concerts. His Aloha from Hawaii concert 1.5 Billion viewers world wide. There were only 3 Billion people that n the world living at that time which means half the world stopped to watch him.

Agreed, and I've come to the conclusion that there isn't much in the way of truth in this video. It's a shame people will hear and believe this crap. In most cases, claims regarding Elvis and just about anyone else, are blown out of proportion, taken out of context, and sometimes cut from whole cloth -- then served to the public on a pretty dinner plate.

Dr Grande, your videos are always superb, however could you please consider doing a video or two focusing on individuals whom you consider especially mentally healthy- rather than unhealthy- and then nevertheless still proceed to analyse 'what could happening in a case like this' etc? I think this would be especially helpful and interesting! Best wishes.

I've told myself, and others, when a teacher says you're not good enough at singing, art, sports etc., don't let the negativity prevent you. You can if you believe youu can.

generally they are right, the chance of making it is one in a million, but you only hear from the successful ones. it is allot more than believing you can, life is not a disney film.

In a way, Elvis' downfall is similar to Michael Jackson's. Questionable physicians probably caring more about money than their patient, irresponsible spending, and tons of leeches. I'd like to hear your analysis on Keanu Reeves who, apparently, has never gone down the path of self destruction in spite of money, fame, and horrible times he went through.

I have read a lot about Elvis, and although it is widely reported that he met Priscillia when she was 14, I believe she remained in Germany with her family after he went back to the USA - to his girlfriend, Anita Wood (a fully grown woman). As we all know, he did actually marry Priscillia when she was 21 and, as far as I can tell, she remains devoted to him. It’s my understanding that his other girlfriends - Linda Thompson and Ginger Alden were also grown women and there are many other widely reported claims of affaires and relationships between Elvis and grown women including co-stars. I have not read any of the “reports” you allude to and the widely published relationships I have commented on here seem to completely discredit the statements you made. In the interest of fairness, please stick to the facts.

Priscilla moved to Graceland when she was 17 and lived in the home shared by Elvis’ father and step mother that was located on the estate, at least that is the arrangement agreed upon when Priscilla’s parents gave consent. Vernon Presley and his second wife Dee were supposed to act as her guardians until she turned 18. And she was supposed to be chaperoned when with Elvis per her father’s instructions (which didn’t happen). She was still in high school so she continued her education there. Priscilla tells of spending time with Elvis in his bedroom. She said they never had intercourse because Elvis insisted she remain a virgin until marriage. She even said in her book that she begged Elvis and didn’t want to remain a virgin but he wouldn’t budge. She also confirmed that Elvis did like his female fans and had a fondness for teenage girls. She said Elvis was shy and unsophisticated when it came to women and felt more comfortable with teenagers because he could talk to them easier….he had more in common with them. But that was in the 1950’s and 1960’s leading up to his marriage. Priscilla has said she tried to accompany Elvis everywhere he went, including the dentist, because she was afraid another girl would steal him away. There is no report out there that Elvis ever slept with an underage girl. And I don’t believe he ever did. He had a few affairs with leading ladies from his movies and Priscilla says he had affairs after they were married, but with grown women. Dr. Grande didn’t do his homework well regarding this area.

I think you may be underestimating the scope of Elvis' singing talent, although I agree with most of what you say about his glaring foibles. Elvis was not only a good singer, but he was a major component of what comprised American Mid-Century exceptionalism. His musical influence was as important as Frank Sinatra's or the Beatles. In many ways, he represented as powerful a cultural force as Oum Khalsoum did in the Arab world.

I saw the Medical Examiner's Report but the weight space was left blank. I'm wondering what document you saw that showed his weight at "159 kg, that's 349.8 pounds" as you put it. Seriously, no attitude here, I'm just curious about such things. I personally know some guys who are 350lb and Elvis never looked as rotund as these guys.

A friend of mine's parents were posted in Germany with Elvis. Her older brother has a picture of Elvis holding him as a baby.

At that time the USA army used to give the soldiers medication to keep night shift so that they could stay awake so that was his first experience with the drugs that he became addicted, but his beautiful singing voice never let him down.

Elvis like alot of these icons had deep problems with substance abuse. His talents and charisma lead him to succes but also were his undoing. He paved the way for the next generation of superstars to arise and he showed people the pitfalls of fame and suscess

The most obvious example being alcohol users looking down on drug users even though alcohol is a drug.

Something that I've always found strange is the statement that he weighed 350 pounds at the time of his death. He was clearly overweight and in bad health but he wasn't anywhere near that overweight.

I was scrolling through, and being this had Elvis in the title, I decided out of curiosity to see what was said. First, the great ol' US Army is the one that give him and others pills to stay awake and I imagine being his mother died while he was in the army, and they were so close, he didn't get much time to grieve before having to return and starting taking more. Elvis married Priscilla on may 1, 1967 not 66, she wasn't any angel either. Clearly, u must not know much about Elvis, because u didn't mention all the good things he done in his life, only the bad. Some of the weight was fluid, because it could change from day to day. He wasn't a saint, but this was a bullcrap analysis of somebody u clearly didn't research well

Exactly, too many people are quick to judge before they look at the whole picture. Elvis's generosity and love for people was beyond what most people would even think about. Elvis paid hospital bill's for family's that couldn't pay, he randomly helped anyone he saw in need. He wasn't worried about money, he enjoyed life and shared. As far as his relationship with Priscilla he didn't touch her until she was 21 and they were married. He was smart enough to know he couldn't get by with that kind of relationship and he didn't. I don't understand how people who Elvis had been good to count turn their back on him for money. I guess they were use to a handout. Of course Elvis wasn't perfect but show me someone who is, none of us are good, no not one , for all have fell short of the glory of God. We are saved by grace, the grace of Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer. Judge not lest ye be judged!! I love Elvis and so doe's a lot of other fan's. The thought's of this man are just opinion's and you know what they say about that. Yes, Elvis died young but he lived while he was here. I could go on and on because it's just irritating to hear how bad Elvis was, how many of these people would even think about helping someone they didn't even know. Somebody like Elvis always makes me think of the guys who landed on the Moon, such a high point in one's life everything after must seem kind of dull. @margolucas3793 You're right about that. I also had some of the best barbecue of my life at a little restaurant on the outskirts of Tupelo. There was a fantastic Elvis mural on the exterior of the bldg.

I enjoy listening to Dr. Grande's analysis. That being said, I'll add my own opinion. While Priscilla was 10 years younger she was reportedly a virgin when they married and the age discrepancy wasn't at all unusual for a man of his generation. I don't know of any history of interest or involvement primarily with underage girls. While he most certainly dated younger women he was known as quite the Southern Gentleman. Actress Ann-Margaret had a lifelong friendship with Elvis and I'm sure she'd disagree. Secondly, Elvis's decline in the four years before he died in 1977 can be attributed to a failed marriage, difficulty seeing his daughter Lisa Marie and serious depression. How many men have died or committed suicide from a similar downturn in family circumstances? Perhaps many of us know such a person.

I got to meet Elvis as a very small child once in Hollywood thanks to my Mother. Such a talent.

Elvis wäs a gift from God. He was by far the best pop singer ever! Many just see his glamour life but one of the causes of his death was surely a burnout due to overwork. He was a perfectionist and an extreme worker. In Las Vegas, he had three concerts per day. And even his last concerts were not "poor" as mentioned here! Even his worst concerts were better than 99% of what we hear today. And I think he was very intelligent and sensitive. He never talked about politics and was altruistic. He never forgot where he came from and wasn't ashamed of it. I think, other people like Parker (who really had a dutch name and no permit to stay in the US) or his entourage were the ones who brought him to death so early.

@@geminidream61 And even in his last phase of life, after his girlfriend Ginger Alden, he wasn't sad nor deprimed. Some say they had inheritable illnesses in the family, because several members died at an early age. But it is difficult to judge if we don't knew him personally. One thing is sure, that he was rather a night owl than a nightingale, but that must be normal in that business. He is still the best and most differentiated pop singer ever. Or who else would sing an aria as well as "Tutti Frutti"?

Something not mentioned: Elvis was extraordinarily good-looking which, I'm sure, added to his ability to get pretty much anything he wanted.

ELVIS, ELVIS, ELVIS,! I was 12 years old in 1973, and on vacation with my my Mom and Dad in Hawaii.. My parents got tickets to the Elvis Aloha Concert.. I knew who Elvis was through some songs and movies, so I looked forward to seeing him live.. To me back then, he was just the guy who could sing, got all the girls, and drove the fancy cars... After seeing him Live, it was a life changing event.. Emotionally, Spiritually, and it actually influenced me to be more outgoing in general.. He had a presence like no other.. Back in the States, he came to N.Y 3 more times to Play Madison Square Garden.. With the exception of his last concert, all were good.. It was obvious at the last show in 1977, that he was sluggish, confused a bit, and obviously on some benzodiazepine drug.. To this day I still go visit Graceland every 5 years or so.. Graceland is 2nd to only the white house in terms of tourists.. Almost a million tourists each and every year.. Half being under the age of 35.. Quite remarkable for a man who left this earth 43 years ago.. Nothing comes close to Elvis.. Think Sinatra, Madonna and Michael Jackson, combine the 3 of them, and you'll have an idea about the magic, presence and stardom of Elvis.. Elvis fused Black Blues music, Country and Pop, along with both Black and White Gospel music...The greatest entertainer to ever walk God's green earth.. BTW Dr. Grande. I have to criticize where you got this Elvis with 15 year old Girls Idea.. His affairs were never with children.. He slept with many co-stars, who were all women in their 20's and 30's.. His known Girlfriends were never underage.. Ginger Alden and Linda Thomson, and a dozen other were all over 21 with the exception of Ginger, who was 19 or 20 when they met.. You might be thinking of Trump who bedded two 12 year old girls in Russia, and a 13 year old in the USA with Jeffery Epstein.. Don't make accusations you can't back up..

Hey did use laxatives, the problem is they started to stop working. Usually in the form of the gum he chewed.

There is no evidence supporting this statement, Elvis relationships were with adult women, some a good deal younger than him but still consenting adults. His relationship with Priscilla, by her own accounts, was platonic until she was of age of consent. So what exactly would he be convicted of and sent to prison, there has to be evidence of wrong doing, there is none other than malicious supposition for which you cannot be convicted.

Sooo agree with everything you have said !!!I I can't believe what this Dr said trying to tarnish Elvis Presley and then go drag his name through the mud !!!! A true fan from age thirteen still going strong age 56yrs. 😁😀😃😃♥️♥️

My mom was an Elvis fanatic I grew up with his music always playing on the stereo, the vinyl days 😆 An amazing thing about Elvis was no Matt his health or weight, his voice was still amazing ❤️❤️

Elvis had the ability to act and was good at it, and if he had been given more serious roles, he could have expanded upon that. "Change of Habit" and "Lonestar" I think it is called were actually good movies for him which I think really showcased his acting abilities. But unfortunately, he was really seen more as a money maker of teeny bopper films then a potential actor, and that's a shame.

While in grade school, one of my teachers in front of all my classmates told me that I was a no good for nothing while throwing my test paper at me. That scared me for a very long time. Love Elvis and visited Graceland twice.

One thing I heard about Elvis was that once his wife Priscilla got pregnant, he never engaged with her intimately again. His mother issues were pretty skewed and ran deep.

Better research and a little more about the great qualities of Elvis would be a more even way of speaking about someone you haven't met. He didn't have sex with any underage girls and when you said Elvis and Priscilla were together for years before they married it sounds like they were living together from the time they met when she was 14. Priscilla was in Germany for over 3 years after Elvis came back to the United States 1960. She came here for the last couple of months her senior year in high school. According to Priscilla and everything I have read about Elvis and his beliefs, they waited for their wedding night for sex . Codeine was the only drug that could have been at a high risk level. People who have overdosed with barbiturates have usually been found as if they had gone to sleep (Judy Garland was on the commode and never moved after an overdose) . Elvis had misused the prescription drugs for years and they done damage but his death was a massive heart attack that had to be beyond painful but extremely quick . Elvis only took one step from the commode and was dead before he hit the floor. The pain was so much that he nearly bit his tongue in half and that doesn't sound like someone out of it nodding off from qualudes and demmoral. If you look at the picture of Elvis coming back from the dentist a few hours before he died you don't see a person behind the wheel of his car that weighed 350 lbs. If was 350 he wouldn't have been doing anything but laying in his bed with the more than 100 lbs he had gained in 8 weeks. By the way it shows Elvis weighed 175 on his death certificate which might have been true after the autopsy. That's more truth than some of the other things I heard in this video. Elvis had a lot on his plate at the end but he was still making people happy even with his not feeling healthy. And by the way he didn't cancel too many shows when you consider that he performed close to 900 shows in less than 8 years. Maybe 25 canceled and some of those were made up later and they were going to make up the others but he died before he could do those. He had sleeping disorders from his childhood on and not from the drugs. The amphetamines started in the army when they would supply the soldiers to keep them alert for long periods. I could go on forever but I doubt anyone is watching this a year later.

Oh my Lord, I had NO IDEA that he was on that extreme amount of illness and different medications! My mum absolutely loved Elvis and in no conversation did she ever speak about why he really died. Rip mum♥️ and rip Elvis.💜 It’s scary and sad.

He seems bi-polar to me. There are countless stories of him being hyper generous, buying expensive things or just giving cash to complete strangers. In his early 20s, I consider him a rare genius when it came to music, despite not being a writer, he was a master arranger. He took good songs and made them great. That is a talent that shouldn't be denigrated as inferior to that of a song writer.

I think Charles Bukowski would be an interesting analysis.

It also explains why he was attracted to women who were the age he was when fame came to him. He was stunted in her late teens to early 20s. Much like many celebs out there. Only a few fought their way through that to some kind of maturity, aging well. I hate to say this b/c I'm not a fan of his or religion, but Bieber seems to be one of the rare few who has course corrected.

The docent (tour guide) replied, "Elvis studied many religions, but he was Assembly of God." BB guy: "Oh, he just looked to me like he attended a lot of seders."

Lina K Having enjoyed Dr. Grande's videos about other artists (and being a big Elvis fan), thought I would check out his Elvis video, which I found interesting. While I have my own criticisms of Elvis (both of his personal life and the way his career went), I think for you to say he never matured or had no real friends may be a little too harsh on him (although there are plenty of examples throughout his life/actions to question his maturity level). Also think he surrounded himself with a bunch of Yes Men, who were dependent on him for financial support. There's a young guy by the name of David, who has several KZread videos. He goes by the post name ElvisistheMan. If you're into Elvis, you might want to check out his videos. He has one called Elvis is the GOAT (greatest of all time). He also has a couple of videos being critical of both the Beatles and Ray Charles, who were somewhat critical of Elvis. Thanks for your honest comment about Elvis.

The story goes, that when Elvis visited the White House to see Nixon, the guard at the gate called in and said "The King is here"

It was so awkward of a meeting that Elvis and Nixon stayed in touch. Nixon called Elvis a nice man that he liked very much and even defended Elvis when talking about the drugs in saying he didn't do illegal street drugs, it was all prescribed by a doctor.

my husband was stationed in Ft Sam Houston and we met a relative of elvis there back in the 90's. his cousin is related to elvis they went to church with us humble nice people

also i don't know if elvis was obese but he certainly was overweight but a lot of that was due to water retention. i read he was about 250lbs. there are also pics of him in march 1977 where you can see his form and he wasn't that heavy actually

I love how you put jokes into your analysis. The best part is that you say it so matter-of-factly, with no change in tone or expression, that if you weren't paying attention, you wouldn't see any joke at all

It was pure genius to have Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. Taking advantage of this huge Audience gave him an incredible amount of exposure . Col. Parker was an opportunist . Very sad that Elvis was surrounded by so many who didn't have any social sophistication or Integrity.

Even at the end, he still had THAT voice...but like many others that have possessed extraordinary talents, certain flaws seem to be inherent.

I agree, his relationship with his mother Gladys was peculiar. I seem to remember he believed he was in contact with his sibling in some manner. This was when he was young. Made me wonder if Gladys was suffering from depression that was untreated, and led to a magical world where her son was "alive" through Elvis.
