@@alicia.8857 I agree with Plant, even with his solo career... but have never been a Morrison fan, I feel he is overrated and over sensationalized due to his death at 27. I’m 50 so I have personal memories of these bands ✌🏻

I remember watching a documentary about Queen and when Freddie was diagnosed, his band members lied to the press to protect his image. Their loyalty touched me and made me cry. Roger Taylor said something like "F*** off, he's our mate, we weren't going to tell the press, it was none of their business." If you weren't around in the 80s, it's difficult to express just how stigmatized HIV and AIDS were and how frightened people were of catching it. Princess Diana did a lot of good for AIDS patients by publicly shaking the hand of a man with AIDS.

Agree! I was nursing assistant (became an RN soon after) when scientists discovered that what was making these people sick was HIV AIDS. They made a separate ward for those pt’s and at first, no one wanted to work there.

Indeed. I remember being a kid during the 80's and early 90's when HIV became a mainstream issue, and seeing how irrationally freaked out many adults were about the risks and causes. Reading about high profile people who struggled with not only a terminal virus while essentially being blamed for their condition really gives me pause as an adult, now that I can relate to how hard life can be at times.

@Jessica Smith As a kid who read the news all the time - when this first started coming out, it was terrifying. People really did not know how it was transmitted. Sort of like Covid 19 now.

Freddie is one of those people who is almost universally adored and people still grieve for on some level. So sad he had such an early death. RIP Freddie.

@@shanewinas6194 No, I just think he wasn't completely able to function on his own, yet he was such a brilliant singer/songwriter and showman. Too much too fast and he wasn't able to cope with it. Plus, he didn't choose to be attracted to other men. He was a unique, incredible yet flawed human being who probably needed someone to help him put the brakes on his hedonistic lifestyle and keep him and his bandmates in check. I know that he was a very kind, generous and beloved person who died because of these circumstances, so no; he didn't "bring it on himself." You should look a little deeper into who he truly was and remember all of the absolute joy he brought so many over those 2+ decades that he was here on this earth. RIP Freddie!! 😥💔🥺💗😣

I am 82 years but absolutely loved Queen. I listen to their music a lot and have seen the movie several times. Remi was great, but there will never be another Freddie.

Freddie Mercury had the best vocals ever and Queen's live aid performance is hands down the best rock performance in history.

People in the public eye today often live their lives like an open wound. Every twist and turn, every health issue, every relationship, every conflict, every day of their lives trotted out for public consumption. Freddie was a shy, private man who faced his fate with extraordinary strength and dignity. He didn’t want sympathy and he cared deeply about his family and friends. The world is a greyer place without him.

Very true.

I saw Queen in concert at the Omni in Atlanta, GA. I was near the front row. Freddie was wild! He was non-stop from beginning to end!! I can still see clearly that lasting image of him dressed in an all white jumpsuit standing right above me on top of a giant speaker singing to the top of his vocal range. He was able to hold a beautiful note for so long! Amazing!

Freddie was an absolute legend. It’s so unfortunate that he passed so young

Freddie was a genius in every way. A unique performer, he later sang opera which he was exited about. His modesty mixed with his witty personality was irresistible. His artwork for Queen's emblem is classic

I saw him and the band in concert in the early 80's. Unforgettable. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

His first name was Farouk before Freddie. He was a lovely person and a top 10 vocalist of all time! He loved his cats which says a lot about a man! Queen played one of the greatest musical sets of all time at Live Aid. He was over the top SPECTACULAR, unfortunately to his detriment. Listening to the opening verses of Bohemian Rhapsody is tragic given his ultimate end. He's hard not to love! Thanks Dr.G for giving him the space he deserves in your repertoire! 💜💜💜

In the 1980’s I remember a child being not allowed to attend kindergarten in Australia as she was HIV positive due to a transfusion. There were protests and outrage from other parents. It was one of many such incidents. We forget how ostracised people were who had this awful disease.

Dear Dr Grande, I was moved to tears by your analysis of Robin Williams and feel the same tonight. When I first saw Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody on TOTP I was 5 or 6, time stood still, I was rooted to the spot and never fully recovered, I’ve adored him and Queen ever since. Oddly enough my band played our last gig the night he died, when we got home Mum told us, it really was the day music died. It’s terrible to think of him suffering, it is too cruel. Thank you for this sensitive analysis, in my very humble opinion, Freddie would be touched by it.💗

I always think of _"that scene"_ in Wayne’s World whenever I hear Bohemian Rhapsody! The studio originally wanted to use a Guns N' Roses song for the head banging singalong, but Myers demanded Bohemian Rhapsody, even threatening to quit the production unless it was used. Freddie Mercury died a few months before the film's release. However he saw the head banging scene before his death, found it hilarious & approved the song for the film's use. Mike Myers _did_ clash with director Penelope Spheeris during filming, complaining: "I can't move my neck like that! Why do we have to do this so many times? No one is going to laugh at that!" Oh, but we did!☺️

I don't know if many people now know that Queen was seen as a "guilty pleasure" band. They used to get ripped by critics in their day.

Taking QUEEN out of the history of the music of the late 20th century would leave a huge void which could not be filled by any other artist or group. Freddie Mercury was a unique and original talent, and I am grateful that he and his band mates contributed to the soundtrack of my coming of age and young adulthood.

My grandparents and parents were absolutely enthralled by Freddie Mercury and Queen so we were raised with their music from a very young age. Still to this day I think Freddie Mercury's voice was just beyond amazing and his lyrics are still relevant today and will remain so forever. ❤

I have learned so much about Freddie Mercury. When I was a young nurse, I was very much involved with treatments for AIDS. I was interested in the illness. Before I really knew about him, I bought a CD of Queen because I loved the music. He was fantastic. The movie about him was great. The saddest part is that now there is excellent treatment for AIDS. They tried for 10 years trying to make a vaccine but failed. Thank-you so much for providing all that interesting information. I think he was one of the good guys.🇨🇦❤️❤️

The movie was actually very inaccurate and disrespectful of Freddie. It wrongly and unfairly portrayed Freddie as a selfish, thoroughly inconsiderate misogynistic prick. It couldn’t have been further from the truth. Freddie was also very professional and hard working, the movie portrayed him again wrongly, as showing up late for recordings and being so inconsiderate and rude. Not at all like the real person who sadly isn’t here to defend himself.

I love when you analyze musicians! 💗 Freddie is one of the best! Heartbreaking he was diagnosed w/ HIV AIDS prior to life-saving antiviral meds. 😢 Nonetheless, so amazing that it’s now a chronic illness and not a death sentence. 💖💗💖

An incredible talent - and until I read his biography, I had no idea what a kind, wonderful guy he was. His passing was a great loss to the music community of the world. Thanks for this tribute, Dr. Grande !

Ahhh! Thank you Dr. Grande! My favorite high school band. I officially love you now.

Anyone heard the Queen song called Mother Love? It was the last song that Freddie was recording before he passed and he never got to finish it 😭 At one point during the recording session, Freddie got so tired and decided to go home early. He told everyone to not worry cause he will be back in the studio very soon to finish recording, but he never returned. He passed shortly after 😭 And because of that, Brian May ended up finishing the vocals and you hear him in the end to complete what Freddie didn't get to. It's so heart wrenching.. I just can't!

After I heard the terrible news about Mercury, I had a dream where I was sad and crying. Freddie was sitting on a king's throne, bending down to touch my face. I looked up and asked him why did Queen stop. He said, "My darling, we never did." I woke up and started crying all over again. I'll never forget that dream as long as I live.

Brian Wilson's story is a great suggestion for your channel. He is a genius musician who led the Beach Boys for a few years, but he suffered mental health issues and drug abuse problems for decades. He also suffered abuse from his father as a kid. His case is also fascinating because he had a highly abusive therapist, Dr Eugene Landy who "helped" him recover but he also took advantage of Brian. There is a youtuber called Jeffery Stillwell who did a few videos on Brian Wilson that I highly suggest for anyone who is unfamiliar with Brian.

When I watch video of Freddie now it is with a smile on my face, a tear in my eye and an ache in my heart for what more he might have been..I thank him for all that he shared with us...Thank you Dr Grande for this touching analysis...

Very well-done and enjoyable as usual. Small detail: The Smile band was not originally formed with Freddie but with a bassist and singer named Tim Staffell, accompanied by Brian May and Roger Taylor. The band did some prolific demos in this setup which generated interest from some record companies. When Freddie took Tims place, naturally there was no more bass player, and the band finally decided on John Deacon.

Very interesting analysis. I have read a few accounts of people who met him. One person said he was very quiet, polite and serious when she met him, and chatted to her in a humble way in a club. Another person, who knew him before he was famous, said that he was already very confidant. Shortly after his death, I remember listening to a radio programme which discussed the nature of charisma. On the 'rock star performance scale' ranging from 1 to 10, Freddie was about 300.

Love the respect you gave to Freddie Mercury, and his rare talent! ♡ He was one of a kind!

I love always loved Queen. My favorite song of all time is You're my best friend. It touches my heart to the point of tears. Happy tears.

Freddy is a hero of mine

Roger and Brian formed Smile with Tim Staffel, who was Freddie's roommate. When Tim left Smile, Freddie convinced them to take him as a singer and form a new band. Other than that, I liked your analysis. I think he had to build very strong walls around him since school: he always said he had to learn to fend for himself and male boarding schools in the 50s weren't exactly safe spaces for shy and sensitive kids. There's an interview where he says that Mary is the only person he could turn to, and I think it meant that with his other friends, he rarely revealed his weaknesses or doubts: he felt that he had to be strong for them. The fact that he looked so different on stage doesn't surprise me : it was a very shy actor playing an extrovert character. I'm sure he also acted like an arse when he was on drugs, but well, that's what drugs do. Everyone is extroverted after a couple of lines! I often wonder about his fear of being physically alone. For us introverts, it's usually our favourite thing in the world.

Thank you Dr. Grande. That was a fantastic analysis. Only our darling Freddy would sing with the amazing opera singer Montserrat Caballe. I have just revisited “Barcelona” what a stunning performance.

Whenever I watch a Freddie Mercury interview, I am struck by how soft spoken, gentle and contemplative he was. It is so removed from this on stage persona. There was a documentary that showed his work as a design student - it is really quite remarkable, and shows another facet to his talent.

Freddie Mercury was definitely a man of our time wasn’t he-and sadly-a victim of society’s fear, prejudice, and rejection of non-traditional lifestyles-even in the face of an escalating, devastating, and unknown disease. Tragically, he was a victim of HIV before it wasn’t considered a death sentence and little treatment had become available. I can remember so clearly when this was considered a ‘gay man’s disease’ instead of a public health issue that needed to be dealt with. People diagnosed with the infection were being isolated and rejected in part because of the particular group that was being so affected by it. Why did he keep it secret??? During that time, having HIV was a death sentence and its cause unknown. Patients were shunned socially, professionally, and emotionally; remember no one knew how it was transmitted. Physicians had begin to notice how this was affecting the gay male population in particular but due to the stigma at the time-little was being done to discover how the virus was contracted or transmitted from person to person. It was not until the introduction of HIV to the heterosexual population (and women in particular) that research and funding began in earnest (perhaps ‘in earnest’ is a reach here). This was helped along by an increasing number of Hollywood’s leading men acquiring the infection and activism had begun by many who had a platform and weren’t afraid to use it. Enter a younger version of Anthony Fauci, M. D. and others who had come to have some success with treatment-but still no cure. It was during this time that I became a medical laboratory professional and the fear was palpable. Unfortunately, I got to see the affects of this disease up close and felt so helpless and sad to see many of these men at the time socially and emotionally cut off at a time when they needed it the most. And yes-hiding it-most of the time, or at least it seemed that way to me-in an attempt to stave off a social demise that loomed large for most-of a physical end; such a devastating time and loss of so many decent, loving, and valuable human beings. Thanks, Dr. G. for another great topic! Perhaps you could present a video based on Harvey Milk and his tragic death at the hands of Dan White in San Francisco? I had such a deep respect for Harvey Milk and see little written about him these days. I hope that you will consider writing about this courageous and inspiring man!

Great post! I was a dental assistant in the 1980’s and later became an RN. The stigma was awful and palpable! Appreciate your insight.

Oh Freddie... An incredibly talented strong and vulnerable decent man. He lived two lives: that of a performer and of a human being. And he did not compromise either - the spirit that it takes. He was a comet that will keep shining its light and emit power onto us for many generations ... Such generosity, Freddie 🙏✨♥️

Freddie Mercury is the best frontman in rock period. I think he never was very addictive to drugs as he was with sex.His lifestyle is widely known and never felt that have been used against him as much,because he rarely maked the performance suffer from it. He was a constantly professional when it came to music .He was a introvert that transition to a great extrovert at stage. His sexuality is to me was his own private matters .He was a lover of life and singer of songs. 🎵 😊🎤🎶❤

I am an admirer rather than 'fan' of Queen's music, but I would still say Freddie Mercury is the greatest frontman of all time. Also when I think of him, I think about love, because he was the embodiment of love, giving and receiving.

A close friend of mine died from AIDS very close to the same times as Freddie. He started to become ill around the same time as well. He did seek treatment, but the early treatments were harsh and he eventually stopped them. He kept his illness private as well. He confessed in his last days that this was due to shame of the promiscuity that led to contracting the virus. It's something else to consider.

*because you/most people (didn’t exactly “take ‘the lost’ for granted” but you) didn’t immerse yourself in it (you chose to spend your time with other things & people), then you realize there just isn’t going to be ‘any more’. We miss the uniqueness that was and will never be again.

My mom is a hugely massive Freddie Mercury fan, to this day she still cries if she thinks about him or David Bowie long enough. One thing that really twists the knife for me was at the end of his last performance was when he closed by saying "I love you" because he couldn't bear to say goodbye

I deeply regret I never got to see him in a live performance. What a talent and an exceptional performer. Mary obviously gave him trust, confidence and absolute loyalty, which his inner persona needed. She is so lucky to be “ the one and only woman partner for Freddie”. RIP Freddie, your music lives on, evermore.
