They dont show it, but they got them all drunk . In the next scene the guys realize the women were bonty hunters looking to capture them and turn them in for the reward. The whiskey was because they couldn't haul them all in at the same time. So they got them drunk untill they passed out.
I love the soft trilling rising and falling at the very edge of perception. It really enhances the supernaturality of the scene.

@@daniellelouisedh So when you said your original comment, you were intending to connect the actors squeel to the Greek myth of the sirens turning men into pigs? I didn't read your comment that way and I don't think many would. My connection to the myth is not manslaining, my understanding of mansplaining is a man telling a woman something that is obvious My connection is not obvious in the least. in fact it's not present on the internet with a cursory search. In fact it has a very high chance of being wrong! Considering your taste in music, I think you dislike men and was ready to counterattack me, even though no slight against you was carried out or certainly intended. If we want to live in a world of equality, men have to be treated as equals also. just My 2 cents.
Best film ever I have watched it about 8 times.
Best film. About half of the characters are based on those in "The Odyssey" by Homer, others are based on real people from the 30s. This is my favorite movie of all time, I've seen it at least 30 times. I mean, I love everything the Cohen brothers touch.... But this one is special
ONLY ONE WORD actually describes this sequence."sensual"..
This was the first feature film to be entirely digitally colour corrected. The Cohen brothers wanted a golden, sepia look to scenery filmed in places that were "greener than Ireland." When they saw the test footage, they asked not to be shown original footage from thereon - only the colour-corrected footage. I mean, just look at the yellow foliage in this scene. Blimey!

Brilliant scene. I studied the Odyssey by Homer in high school, which was an awful long time ago, and I'm pretty sure this scene was borrowed from the Greek epic poem, where Odysseus comes to a river and beautiful maidens are washing their clothes. It might be time to re-read Homer.

The film is partly an adaptation of the Odyssey, in fact.
It's absolute genius that the historical Greek mythology was woven into this work of art. These creatures were beautiful women who sang so sweetly that sailors passing by could not resist their call." ❤
I hope this is the future of women in this country.
