My grandfather who was born in 1922 loved this movie. He was a quiet farmer, but he would put this on when I was a kid and we would watch it together. He has now passed, and watching it always makes me think of him.

My grandpa was born in 1930 and he too loved this movie. He passed away in 2008 and my wife at the time and her sister sang this song at his funeral.

That's the whole purpose of reality.

Probably one of the best portrayles of the spiritual and physical feeling of a genuine baptism, its a sign of public confession, but also forgiveness and redemption. Even if you don't believe in God the idea is beautiful.

Near genious in every aspect of this film. The music is another level of simplistic excellence. Still makes me laugh after at least a dozen times since i first seen it. My son bought the DVD for my birthday when he was just 10 years old.

One of my favorite lines in this movie, words to the effect, “it should be the one with the capacity for abstract thought.” I’ve used that line a couple times.

That look on Delmar's face when he started swaying and the spirit came over him...reminds me of some baptist services from my youth.

This isn't Baptist. They don't baptize for remission of sins. This is a church of Christ congregation. We sing acapella and baptize for remission of sins.

It seems to me that all Cohen's works are kind of about it: lost stories and memories, like the one of the three brothers and of the protagonists of The big Lebowski, or the protagonists of The ballad of Buster Scroogs. It's the stories nobody tells, that get lost in time.

I work with a church based nonprofit from the Lutheran tradition that operates at a remote wilderness site. A couple who was on long term staff had a baby, and decided to ahve her baptised. We processed from our main meeting space to the local river singing this song, and the baby was baptised in the river fhat flows through our valley.

Really? Whats your religion and where are you from? I was raised Appalachia/southern and methodist and I know this one. I think its more Appalachia

The acting, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the script, are by far some of the best in the history of major motion pictures.

This scene shows that all three actors would be as comfortable on stage as on screen. What a great movie.

C’mon in boys the water is fine….undoubtedly one the most underrated movies. So deep and subtle. Thank you Mr’s Coens.

can you imagine though? you're in the middle of nowhere and these dozens of white-clad ethereal beings slowly glide by you singing as one. who WOULDNT follow them? there's something so fae about it even though i know it's currently a christian practice. it's definitely a kind of magic, for sure.

I love these comments. I have followed Jesus since 1984, and whilst it is true that God is way beyond magic, there is something about the word that captures how music, nature and art can captivate and point us to the Eternal. Go well friends.

The movie is a downright masterpiece of cinema and storytelling

There're plenty of small congregations out there and understanding people. I also suffer from social anxiety (diagnosed as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, but certainly exacerbated by social situations). Church is one of the least anxiety-inducing places I can be- especially the church my family went to when I was little, which is smaller. My sister still goes there. Probably 100 people, max, in that church, and never all at once. There's a certain peace in being somewhere where so many people knew you before you were born. They're like family, but the kind that are always loving and happy to see you. I pray God meets you wherever you are, and that you find a place that helps ease your soul.

The baptism scene in O Brother, Where Art Thou is a reference to the Lotus Eaters in Homer's The Odyssey. I like and appreciate how the scenes and characters mix both symbols of classic Americana with elements of Homer's epic poem.

When we read the odyssey in high school our English teacher played this movie for us after

I'm Jewish Israeli, and I also work in tourism so I've been many times with Christian groups to the river Jordan. Many people come there to be baptized in the same river where Jesus was baptized according to tradition. I still think that this song is probably the best musical representation of the faith of people in redemption. It is also connected to the fact that in the film, Delmar truly tries to act righteously after being baptized. I;m of a different creed but having seen people go through this in reality and listening to the beautiful hymn always gives me a warm feeling watching this scene.

My cinema class is watching this right now and I can't express the amount of tears of joy I held back and peace and harmony I felt in my soul from the people singing this song. I swore I heard this before and I never knew the name until now. I'm Christian but am not really super religious or anything but this song makes me appreciate all that God and Jesus has done for me and for others. I never got baptized but my soul did when it heard this song.

This movie is just brilliant. The story, the acting, the scenery and the beautiful songs.

Such a beautiful song. Being raised in the South, with so much gospel influence, the movie has such a special meaning to me bc I was living in Nashville at the time it was released. Music City couldn't get enough of the music and I've personally been smitten ever since. ❤

My granny used to sing this when we’d watch it with her as little kids and we’d sing a long ❤️

I’m 22 but when I was a very young child my mom would play this song, as well as “I am a man of constant sorrow”, for me. For years I thought she must’ve been very pious back then but she recently told me that she had this on CD from the movie soundtrack 😂. Still a very beautiful song that reminds me of my early childhood.

This was one of my grandmothers favorite songs. She was a young teenager during this time period. She said her family always had gospel music playing on the radio.

What a masterpiece this is! Became a Coen fan after Raising Arizona but this is a whole nother level. Never paid much attention to George Clooney (yeah he's pretty nuff) but knew he had to be special after seeing this. Definitely bona fide dude.

If you love this song like I do, I highly recommend watching the Colorado All-State Treble Choir singing it in the atrium of a hotel during a competition. I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written for treble voices.

You don’t have to believe to enjoy the results of other peoples faith. Any music that comes from people with a sense of place or faith is always beautiful. Just sit back shut up and enjoy it. Just because your an atheist doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a good choir.

I used to rent this movie every Friday night from Hollywood Video, was a family tradition to go each weekend, and as a 7-12 year old, I was constantly obsessed with this movie. I knew nothing about it, simply rented it based on the VHS cover. Still love it at 30!\

As a young teenager I had the privilidge to grow up in what little bit of the old south that remained...I miss those days

The genius of the Coen Brothers ability to create dialogue is almost frightening. In my opinion they are on par with the world greats.

Wonderful just looking at the eyes of the brother who runs towards redemption. I somehow reminds me of Pirandello's short novel "Ciaula scopre la luna".

This scene makes me cry happy tears every time. I love how you can hear the voices but don't understand at first, but then all of a sudden you hear the congregation burst into song. I know it's not an overtly religious movie, but this scene makes me think of how much I love the Savior Jesus Christ 🥹

Definitely,So many brilliant lines,take Michael Badalucco 'Baby face Nelson' "Jesus saves, but George Nelson WITHDRAWS!" & the casting was spot on with so many actors, like the women bank customer who comment hurt George's feelings, where did they find her...

I can't believe my grandparents, who are both alive and active, were alive during this time.

There is something that I remembered after watching this scene that it interesting. That guy said everyone's looking for answers, and that it was hard times they were living in, and many other people see christianity and religion in general as a way to get through life easier. However, when jesus talks about living with God he talks about a yoke. God takes away the yoke of the world, and replaces it with his own. He never promised anyone an easy life, but the burden he gives you leads to better things ultimately.

I absolutely loved this movie.this was planned at my daughter 's funeral 16 years ago

This movie is so Great! Means TRUTH in many ways .

The subtext to this scene is that it's in the midst of the Great Depression and many people are desperately turning to baptism to deal with it.

If I had a nickel for every time the Coens used the Odyssey as a basis to tell a story about self realisation and to showcase American Folk Music set in the early to mid 1900's, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's wonderful that it happened twice.
