Tori and Jacob recorded Tori's verse in one hour as she had to rush out and participate the Lawrence' band's concert. Plus Jacob had 3 days to arrange the whole song and sing his parts, before heading to Mumbai where he had to deliver Djesse vol. 4. It was a last minutes work. And still, this is the end result. Mind blowing.

Yebba asked to not be featured in the song's title as she didn't add anything new to the song. :) Jacob used her amazing cover years and years ago in his I-Harm you series. The original video is not even complete, so Jacob (and Ben Bloomberg) had to do some crazy engineering magic to finish Yebba's verse and clean the audio.

If Jacob disappears today - there are tens of hours of stuff that he's done that we can pour over for years, analyze and enjoy, so the legacy is already here. Now we just watch this amazing explosion of creativity, love, joy divinity, etc. - in real time, and we should be grateful for every minute.

You have to watch the almost 2 hour Jacob breakdown of this song. he recorded it, how he pieced everything together, it’s a master class that he offers on KZread for free! Really amazing, like you feel like a part of how this was crafted when you’re listening to the final version. Totally worth it!

Yes. Yebba asked not to be acknowledged as she didn’t have time to re-record her KZread recording from 2016 that Jacob harmonised on in 2021. Hence her name not mentioned. Watch the other video Jacob did on the making of the recording. He is a musical alien.

I have listened to this one maybe 20 times now. And it always provokes massive chills and tears from my eyes. This is unlike anything I've ever heard before. Not to undersell any of the others, but especially Tori's part, wooh. When she enters there... it's just so pure and innocent. As a linguist, I have a hope that we one day come up with a word strong enough to describe this masterpiece. Otherwordly, yes, but more. Otherdimensionally? Please help.

That arrangement/performance represents the moment in modern pop music that signals the end of looping and sampling and a return to deep craft, intellectual and artistic expression and the search for profundity, and all I can say is, YAY!

My friend, Yebba ASKED Jacob NOT to credit her because she felt she didn't add anything new to this arrangement. Out of respect for her decision, Jacob did not credit her. But TRUST me, he respects her and WANTED to mention her in the title. Check out Jacobs breakdown video of this track and you'll hear him talk about this.

Wow. I have no words. That. Was. phenomenal. I don’t think I breathed. Glorious. The heavens opened up. Four extraordinary musicians giving all they’ve got for an extraordinary, iconic piece of music. Wow, wow, wow. I am in awe. I will probably listen to this over and over again, all day and tomorrow and the next day…as infinitum. It was perfection. Almost total perfection. It would’ve been TOTAL perfection if they had Gabriel Henrique in there to add his two cents with a whistle or two…although Tori can do whistles too. I just love Gabriel and he, IMO, is as iconic as they are. What a joy that was! What an explosion of talent. God breathed his glory through all of that. He did, indeed!

Jacob’s new version is great, and everyone who sang on it did a fantastic job. The issue I have with it, is that JC operates so far off into the musical stratosphere, that he doesn’t come back down to earth enough for the everyday music listener (example, He Won’t Hold You). What I loved about his arrangement of Yebba’s TikTok cover, is that he took what she already had and just elevated it a couple steps further. He put more of a warm gospel flair on it that blew all our tiny minds within the first fifteen seconds, and kept us wanting more when the video shut off early. I wish he had just done a longer version of that original recording for the record. People were literally screaming for it in the comments section of that video. But yeah, John Legend and Tori Kelly both slayed it with what they were given.

The problem with "popular music" is that it's musically simple. Watch YT's Frank Tedesco playing his improvised impression of whatever people in the chat ask him to play. 17 years of piano playing, music theory and school, and Frank nails it every time, and often succeeds in making it more interesting. Believably so. Bridge over troubled water is melodically beautiful, yes. But not too difficult. Some of the hymns of Christian church may compare. And this performance harks back to US black church and its music performances. The overall atmosphere goes back to, say, the 1960s with close harmony, but not of the a capella kind, but the layered multi-track studio kind. Check out the Singers Unlimited that would hardly ever perform live because 4 singers cannot reproduce, live, what was done in, say, 20 overdubs. The cleverest application of the use of mastering pieces of vocal studio recording into one masterpiece may be "I'm not in love" by 10cc. They recorded bits of vocal and used the mixing console as a sort of keyboard. They sort of used the mixing console as a DIY mellotron. Jacob does not think he is a genius. Well, in popular music, he is. As to this specific performance, the female soloists sing ornamentations into the song that are bordering on annoying me. All of these people in this recording are masters at what they do and seem pitch perfect. The result is great, and indeed, I could put it on repeat and forget to switch it off.

Believe it or not, dear Brad, I had never heard of Tori Kelly or Yebba. Yebba and Tori don't impress me at all. There's loads of ladies like that. John Legend is a courageous and inspired singer and he's indeed quite unique. A criterium is always "Do You Want to Keep Listening To This Singer?" Tori does not pass that test, she's boring, Yebba may develop something, John does it right, he does not bore you with a way of singing that 100.000 others have or do, too, like Tori does.
