Lyrics:
I'm dancing the seven veils
Want you to pick up my scarf
See how the black moon fades
Soon I can give you my heart
I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't see the flame
But I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do
They're throwing it all this way
Dragging it back to the start
And they say, "See how the glass is raised?"
I have refused to take part
I told them "drink something new"
Please let me pull something through
I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't
I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't see the flame
But I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do
I do
I do
I say I do
Soon I can give you my heart
I swear I do
Soon I can give you my heart
I do
Mandinka
Soon I can give you my heart
Soon I can give you my heart

I'm crying as I'm listening to this. The world needs a million more Sinead O'Connors -- people with fierce integrity who are willing to speak truth to power, whatever the cost. She was a brilliant artist with the voice of an angel, always true to herself and others. Her presence will be missed. RIP Sinead.

I remember being stunned by this song when it first came out. The driving guitar, the attitude, the look. I drove an hour to track down the cd single--couldn't wait for the album! I know she's been plagued by troubles and couldn't see beyond them to the huge number of fans sending her good wishes. I wish her children the best as they cope with this terrible loss.

I actually think she could see beyond them. WAY BEYOND them and hence, THAT is why she had her personal issues. Yes, there are many who can't see the forest because of the trees but some can see the forest here, there and where it's headed but sadly can't see their own tree. I don't think anyone can deny that for all the visceral hate she received for SNL, she was the one who could see and we were all the unknowing. SHE was on the right side of history, not us. I just think some can see clearly what others can't and a human being can be so right on so many things & be so stupid & blind to even more.....it's why we are stronger together than alone.

I was watching that night, and she had fully won the crowd back from whatever drama preceeded it with the first song she performed, and then she tore up that picture after the second song - the silence was like the sudden onset of an ice age, and all I could think was, "what does she know?" I was sad people turned on her for it. And I thought of that incident many times over the years as information pertaining to the catholic church emerged.

Now, she's a woman who went through the hell of her own self.... She's going to be victorious and THEN her true FIERCENESS will stun us all. My heart breaks. Sinead gave me strength when I needed it. In return I blasted The Lion and the Cobra every chance I got in the record store where I worked. Loved how that caused customers to ask what was playing and bring it up to the register over and over. Sending so much love to her now in her passing, to her dear ones as well as heartbroken fans everywhere. That type of energy ricochets through the universe in her wake. That is beautiful, feminine heart power, raw emotion and anger for the purpose of change. Let’s continue to bask in it and embody it in her honor.

I'm shocked and heartbroken to hear that Sinead has died. She was unique, feisty, outspoken, brave, strong - traits that some people are intimidated by if they deem someone to not fit into a neat little category. Sinead couldn't be categorized, luckily, but she also didn't always get the admiration and respect she so deserved. Her voice was absolutely stunning, totally crystal clear and flawless, and she's one of the greatest female singers we'll ever be blessed to have had on this earth. I've always particularly loved this song, Mandinka, which is so energizing and beautifully sung. Nothing Compares To You is her most famous song but Mandinka is just as memorable and burns into the soul. Also, I much preferred Sinead's version of Nothing Compares To You to Prince's original version, much as I also love Prince's music. Sinead brought a heart-rending rawness to the song and, of course, the video was stunning and her beautiful face, huge eyes, was mesmerizing. I'm so sorry that she had such tough times in her life and that her young son tragically died last year, a loss that must have broken her. My heart goes out to her remaining family and we are all behind them, wanting them to know how dear Sinead was to our hearts and how her legacy will live on always. Rest in Peace Sinead, thank you so much for your beautiful music, and you'll always be remembered. x

Went to Ireland a couple of years ago. U2 and the Cranberries music and images were everywhere. Nary a mention of Ms. O'Connor. Did not hear her music a single time. Truly sad. She is an international treasure--even if Ireland doesn't want to claim her.

BTW, the drugs in the 80s were good but not if you used heroin. Here in Vancouver, Canada, the stuff was so pure by the mid-80s that people were actually OD'ing all the time. Especially musicians.
