Sinéad O'Connor - Mandinka (lyrics on screen)

Музыка

Mandika is a single released by Sinéad O'Connor from her 1987 debut album 'The Lion and the Cobra'. The single was a big college radio hit in the US following Sinéad's appearance on 'Late Night with David Letterman', in what was her first US network television appearance. This video is of her appearance at the 1989 Grammy Awards. Her only expalantion of the song came in an 1988 interview when she said “Mandinkas are an African tribe. They’re mentioned in a book called Roots by Alex Haley, which is what the song is about. In order to understand it you must read the book.”
The Mandinka (or Mandingo) is a West African ethnic group with an estimated global population of 11 million. They are descendants of the Mali Empire and continue to educate orally, with learning traditionally done through stories, songs and proverbs. During the 16th, 17th & 18th centuries, many Mandinka were enslaved and shipped to the Americas, resulting in a significant portion of African Americans in the US being descendants of the Mandinka people. One of the better known Mandinka people is 'Kunta Kinte' whose life story was told in the Alex Haley novel 'Roots' and the subsequent mini-series of the same name. The 1974 film 'Mandingo' has boxer Ken Norton playing the main slave character.
In urban dictionary circles, Mandingo can mean something a little different.

She’s also shed demands of the record companies by shaving her head to oppose the beauty ideal, tucked her newborns clothes into her back pocket to push the point further, and had the Public Enemy logo on her head to protest their rejection by the biased Grammy board! She was a true shining light!

That song, that album, got me thru high school. And being Irish I looked up to her and hoped someday I'd be able to do something, ANYTHING, with that level of passion and skill. But as we know, life, mental health, tragedy and loss can and do get in our way sometimes. I will, however, continue to look up to her. It will just be to the heaven above. One of Ireland's most fierce warrior poets. Thank you.

This was a performance as a grammy nominee for this single and her self written/self produced breakthrough album The Lion and the Cobra. Almost 2 YEARS b4 the global hit she had with the Prince song Nothing Compares to you. - which blinded many to the fact that Sineads 11 Albums and 1000s of unique live performances were evidence of her status as a creative force in her own right. Here she displays the bald head she shaved when record executives told her to " look pretty", the logo of some disenfranchised Rappers on the side of her head in solidarity, and her sons babygro hanging from her back pocket in response to the record companys order to have an abortion or you will have no career. Sinead the fragile Warrior.

Just listening to her memoir Remembering, 7 Hours, I’m about 1:30 hours into it. She speaks about the nun that worked at the “place of safety she was in when she was 15…. This nun traveled the world as a nun and was in Africa and she told her about Mandika …. So I came here to listen to it as I’m going through all her music, I especially love the empire’s new clothes. I was 10 when I heard nothing compares to you (I only found out a few years ago prince actually wrote it) did not change my feelings because prince was also cool (talented, deep, real) so I feel guilty that I never knew how super talented she was, because lets face it after the pope incident they cut her off - everyone even the fans - so she was never promoted like the cranberries - so I was never exposed to it (my mom was a manager at a record store in South Africa CNA) I grew up always listening to radio and eventually mtv, and that time if someone had the CD at party the chances were you’re not going to play it… so yeah she was definitely one of a kind - music is good it makes us feel- when you hear music it should make you happy (dancing) sad emotional meaning-

One of the best Grammy Awards ever---she, Toni Childs, and Melissa Etheridge were all up for Best Rock Female Vocal, and all three performed back to back. They were all terrific. Tina Turner won, but I wanted a three-way tie with these three stars.

So sad we lost her. I've always loved her voice. So powerful such a shame stars today like Cardi B are labeled as so talented. Music is about voice, expression and emotion. Sinead always delivered.
