Danny Boy - Sinéad O'Connor, 1993
Музыка
Sinéad O’Connor performs ‘Danny Boy’ on a special Christmas Eve edition of The Late Late Show.
In his introduction, Gay Byrne explains that singer Sinéad O’Connor had been a guest on the previous week’s programme and gave;
"A stunning performance."
When she heard that an Irish music special was being planned for Christmas Eve, she asked to be included. She chose to sing an unaccompanied version of the traditional ballad ‘Danny Boy’.
This episode of The Late Late Show was broadcast on 24 December 1993. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
‘The Late Late Show’ was intended to be a summer filler, but proved so successful with the public that it became part of the regular schedule. The idea for the programme came from the show’s producer, Tom McGrath, who wanted to present an Irish version of the American talk show ‘The Tonight Show’.
Gay Byrne was to be the show’s presenter and would remain so for the next thirty seven years. Tom McGrath’s original idea was that the show would be informal and have the feel of people dropping in for a chat.
‘The Late Late Show’ became an important forum for the airing and debating of many issues in a changing Irish society.
The first programme of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast at 11.20 pm on 6 July 1962. At the time, it was unusual to have a live talk and entertainment show on so late in the day’s viewing. On that first show, the guests were Count Cyril McCormack, Ken Gray, George Desmond Hodnett and Harry Thuillier.
McGrath would go on to pioneer many other successful variety shows on Irish television.
Pat Kenny replaced Gay Byrne as presenter in 1999 and remained in that position for 10 years. Ryan Tubridy presented the show from 2009 to 2023. The programme is still running today and is presented by Patrick Kielty.

Damn the pop culture that didn't protect and cherish this woman. One of the greatest singers ever. Hell. She makes music of breathing.
That was a courageous performance. To sing that with no accompaniment, all alone with those long and sometimes perilously high notes, AND no vibrato to cover up any pitch issues--it doesn't get anymore challenging than that. And what a stunning result. Where has this been all my life?

The voice of an Angel, the heavenly choir will be singing an even more beautiful song now. Rest in peace Sinead 💚 xxx
I remember meeting Sinead in the students common room at Bolton Street College of Technology in early 84......She had long brown hair then and was dressed in black, a Goth before Goths were a thing. She was incredibly petite, barely 5 foot, I wasn't used to such petite Ladies, I'm 5'11" and my own Ma, my only Sister and my Only Daughter are above 6!, but had a huge personality, I remember her calling me "a southsider", lol, what A GAL!. Sinead you were the best of us, a simple fact. God Bless you darling, I will NEVER forget bringing Orla my daughter to that "Fantastic Gig", 9 pm on a Hot, Australian Twilight and seeing and hearing your fantastic voice at Womadelaide. Truly Loved. God Bless Ireland ☘️
I'm a 100% disabled Vietnam Combat Veteran (2/502 Infantry, 101st Airborne) I spent 9 years with the US Army and then moved to Australia in 1979 to be an Art Teacher. Along with an Australian Vietnam Veteran Artist we started in 1982 putting together Australian War Art shows in Sydney. We had Veteran's art works, photos and mounted stories by both the Solders and Nurses. Art helped me with my PTSD. I was the "point man" and the team "Sniper". Reading this woman's life history and suffering pains my heart. Such an intelligent woman only wanting peace of mind. To loose her son in such a way. I'm sure she sang from her heart, such a loss.

Agreed! I've heard so many different versions of "Danny Boy" in my 44 years and this one truly captures the love, heartbreak, anguish and hope to be reunited in the afterlife. I always knew the words but Sinead's rendition of it makes you feel it. Breathtaking and ethereal.
The most beautiful and touching I’ve heard in my lifetime, and I’m near 70 years of age…

She also did the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi acapella. She sang it at the service for the 9/11 victims. I was driving to church & I was balling so hard I had to pull off the freeway because I could barely see for the tears in my eyes. It is definately a much needed to hear song.

I'm in tears now
What a voice. This version gave me goosebumps. Rest in peace.
Name me one singer that could give such a vulnerable accapella performance now, there isn't one. Love her always 😢

I wish I knew my roots better being Irish-AMerican. I know, no sadness for an American, but most of us have no true identity....

Not to take anything away from her.. but Son House dont you mind people grinnin is a good example. On the same level of soul.
Truly a legacy of the sounds of an Irish woman, so steeped in a bloody history of adopted painful history, hauntingly beautiful. I had a friend when I was young a Liverpudlian "scouse" who when he was drunk he would sing like Rod Stewart, Danny Boy and Molly Malone, he used to be a seaman and wore a Pork Pie hat had a boxers nose spread across his face, frequently drank too much and would win fights using the Liverpool kiss, a dangerous head butt, but when he sang he was like a angel, his name was Billy Bell. He once told me the Irish Granmothers would sing them songs to the kids.
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the flowers are falling 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow And I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so And when you come, and all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I may well be You come and find a place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me And I will hear, though soft your tread above me And all my grave Will warmer sweeter be And you will bend and tell me that you love me And I will sleep in peace until you come to me But if I live and should you die for Ireland Let not your dying thoughts be just of me But say a prayer to God for our dearest Island I know she hear and help to set her free

Brings me to tears.
The world should collectively hang its head in shame for how they treated her. A warrior for love and redemption. A voice beyond time gone into the wind. x
Sinead sings the words of the song directly to Danny Boy with the complete conviction that he loves her and she loves him. We overhear the words she sings to Danny. Therein lies the power of this version. Most versions of this song treat the song as a song that should be performed for an audience. But Sinead, of course, has the perfect voice and the perfect intonation to create the perfect version of this famous song. The audience, who has heard versions of this song all their lives, are clearly aware of the gift they have received.

I’d heard Danny Boy many many times and assumed it was a love song. It is a love song-from a father to a son who’s gone to war, which is why it’s a standard in the tenor repertoire. Sinead’s lovely fragile version was unknown to me before now. That slip of a girl is gone just as Danny is gone. ☘️

@@theresanolan1157 Yes, it’s a love song from a father to son and a man to his country-it was not intended as a romantic song about a girl singing to her boyfriend named Danny.
Will never forget these beautiful, smart, compassionate eyes😢

Hello Gizelle, how are you doing?
I knew Sinead when we were both at Bolton Street College of Technology, She then had long brown hair, 83-84. Such a sweet human I doubt that I will ever meet again. In 2014 in Adelaide, Australia I was driving my Cab and I met Sinead again as a passenger. Such a sad passing such a loss. God Bless You "Little Girl".
Sinèad showed us that there is incredible strength in vulnerability - one does not cancel out the other❤️

Only childish immature girl-kids use words like “vulnerability” and “incredible strength” Normal mature adults speak plainly
Fragility and yet, incredible strength. One of the most beautiful voices ever. She has left us far too soon. Her music and vision of a better world for all will live on!!
To pull that off so incredibly, with just her voice....! Without listening to the lyrics, she causes me to want to weep and sends chills throughout. May you be in peace XXX

NOT MANY SINGERS CAN MATCH THIS PURE TALENT...
have never heard and will never hear another voice like hers again, she was exceptional and the one time I saw her live I cried like a baby, it was so emotional.
